It was a little difficult to find the place to check in. This was a nice, clean hotel room. We stayed in a family friendly room. The beds were comfortable and there were drawers and a lot of counter space, a desk, end table, and small table. There were 3 extra pillows in a cabinet. There was an access code, so when someone left others weren't left in the dark and checkout was just a matter of sending a message via WeChat. We really liked this hotel!

Advantages: The location is very good. It is the core area of the ancient city. It is also very close to the parking lot.
Disadvantages: For a room with an average price of around 500, the bedding configuration is not pure cotton. Turning over and pulling the quilt will generate a lot of static electricity. After turning off the lights at night, the static electricity is clearly visible and the experience is bad. The floor heating temperature in the room is average, the air conditioner is noisy when it is turned on, and the body feels a bit cold when the air conditioner is turned off. Due to the structure of the courtyard and the large floor-to-ceiling windows, if there are people talking or children playing in the courtyard, it will affect sleep. During this lunch break, I was woken up several times by bear children.
Overall: The location and the decoration are well received, but the bedding is really hip, suitable for tourists who want to find a convenient rest for shopping in the ancient city (thousand-yuan hotels in the ancient city are fully booked for this trip, and the viewing during the tour is roughly the same ) If you are looking for sleep quality and facilities, please move to the most high-end local hotel in the city center. The 300 stalls in the city of Xinzhou are already very comfortable.

Because we were traveling with my parents, we planned a trip at the end of the National Day holiday, and it certainly didn't disappoint. We booked Shao Dong Jia guesthouse online in Pingyao Ancient City, and the owner picked us up from the North Gate of the ancient city. The guesthouse was located in a quiet area within the bustling ancient city, a courtyard house with simple and elegant decor, and was very clean. The hot water in the shower was fantastic. Highly recommended! I especially want to mention that when we arrived at the guesthouse around 8 pm, we were taking my parents out for dinner, and the owner, seeing that they were elderly, kindly offered to take them out in an electric tricycle. It was very heartwarming 🥰 Thank you, owner!

If you want a more authentic experience than staying in a fancy hotel, this is your place. Mrs Liu (sp?) was so lovely and helpful. She speaks a bit of English and is very fast on the translation apps for what she doesn’t know. She gave us a map of the Ancient City and explained where we should visit. Every day she gave us water bottles. We stayed 2 nights.
You can experience a kang bed here, in a cozy room in a quaint courtyard. It was quite firm but still comfortable. There is air con which was needed when we were there. The bathroom is small but we found that everything didn’t get wet, despite the small size of the room.
The inn is on the “taxi-bus” route just off South Street. As it is a block from the Main Street it is significantly quieter as the honking of “taxi-buses” doesn’t happen as much in the alleyways. Just be careful to walk on the sides of the road as the mopeds and taxi-buses are electric so quiet, except for the honking which is loud and constant, and they drive quite fast for the size and busyness of the streets.
There is plenty of food places just a short walk away from the hotel. The ancient city was a lot more touristy than we had expected.
You need to prearrange with the innkeeper to organise a “taxi-bus” to pick you up from the South Gate. Regular cars are not allowed inside the city wall. We were dropped by the DiDi but it is too far and busy to walk with luggage to the inn. Mrs Liu and her husband helped us out with their mopeds.
Not many “taxi-bus” drivers know the inn as it is a smaller private hotel, so make sure you have the address printed out to show them. The taxi-bus is 10RMB pp per ride and you can flag them down anywhere on the streets they are allowed on, but they may not want to go where you want to go, so just flag another one until you get one that agrees. You scan the drivers QR code to pay.
Overall we enjoyed our stay at Pingyao Yunshu Inn.

Excellent value for money, spotlessly clean, and the staff provide great service. Breakfast is included, and the location offers very convenient transportation for exploring. In the evenings, it's lovely to stroll out to the square and enjoy the cool air. I wholeheartedly recommend Wutongge Hotel to anyone planning a trip to Datong.

Fantastic value for money. I really liked the room. Shower and bathroom were great. Bed was comfy. The hotel is in a quiet street a little bit outside of the main streets which for me was a big plus. It's not too far away and way quieter. The owner/husband picked me up and dropped me off at the north gate. They have a fridge where you can pay for drinks per qr code.
2 water bottles a day for free in the room.
The wife gave me a map with explanations and an itinerary idea. Super nice!
Improvement ideas:
- Water refill from a big jug to safe on plastic
- English explanation on how to book the Pingyao 3 day ticket on WeChat (I figured it out myself but a small guide would be cool)
- some way to close blinds so people can't look in without having to shut off all daylight.
Would recommend the place and would book again without looking for anything else.

The room is exquisite and clean. Tucao the bathroom, the bathroom and the toilet are half-spaced, the shower seat and the underground are water, and the funny thing is that the toilet really needs to be manually used, and it automatically flushes several times when taking a bath, and there is no floor towel. I mentioned it to a male boss. At that time, it was said to be a floor mat, and the male boss corrected me, and then he said, we just don't have a floor towel, alas ~~~

The room is antique. The yard has a Shanxi merchant feel. There is a restaurant in front, the food is very good, and we got a discount if we stayed in the back. We also gave two bottles of vinegar when we checked out. The service was very good, and they kept asking if it suited our taste. They helped the elderly lift the door curtain when they came in and out. I will choose this place again next time. I was not disappointed.

Clean and hygienic, the boss is friendly and the service is good. There are various vegetables grown in the large yard inside, which children love. The planned Mianshan tour is reasonable and not tiring, especially suitable for parent-child tours. The only thing I was not satisfied with was that we went to the nearby inn ”Risheng Hotel”. They charged us a very expensive fare to take us to the Wang Family Courtyard. They dropped us off before we even reached the entrance of the scenic spot. The attitude was very bad. Please don't book in the future. “Risheng Accommodation”.

The owner is incredibly nice! He called me shortly after I booked, sent me the location, and even met us at the parking lot to help with our luggage. Parking is 10 yuan a day. The hotel is a 5-6 minute walk from the parking lot, and very close to Xiaonanmen, so it was a short walk back after seeing the light show at night. It's also very close to Yamen Street, which was super convenient for catching the performances at the county government office. Just a few more steps and you're on Center Street, so food options are plentiful. The hotel facilities are great too; every room has a water dispenser, which was convenient for my parents to make tea. The courtyard is a 300-year-old former residence, so it has a historic feel on the outside, but all the necessary modern amenities on the inside. Overall, it's a great place and I'd recommend it to friends.

NNihaNicOntheGoThis hotel is not to miss, it is very beautiful with traditional style. We stayed in a beautiful room with the traditional Kang Bed (which was much more
Comfortable than we thought actually), it was totally quiet at night and thanks to blackout curtain we didn’t wake up too early. The owner offered us a bottle of vinegar and he also wanted to take us to the train station for free. Actually we booked another hotel with a “normal” bed for the other days in Pingyao but we regretted a lot. We paid much more to struggle sleeping because of nonsense modernities of the other hotel with intelligent amenities making noise and light in the room. So, it is much better to keep your budget and stay in this perfect hotel. The only “downside” is the toilet without wet/dry separation but honestly at the price you pay to stay in a great place like this, it’s totally ok.
GGuest UserWe stayed at thos lovely hotel. Lovingly restored by the current owner Mr Wang. He is the 6th generation owner of the property.
Until 10 years ago it was a derelict and dilapidated building. He poured money, time, blood, sweat and tears to restore it
And it does feel and look like a traditional house.
You feel you are going back in time.
Firstly the customer service is way beyond the call of duty. Its so good, i would recommend staying with mr Wang at whatever hotel he runs.
He picked us at the Lower East Gate, and brought us to the hotel, then took nearly half an hour to explain in great detail where we need to visit, whether the sights be in the city or outside the city.
Some of his suggestions, not on the tour books were very good . For example he suggested 3 restaurants, and we avoided them thinking he was getting a kickback.on our 4th and last day we tried restaurant no 2 of his. And it was good , the food and service were good. The prices were average with other restaurants and we got a 10% discount being the hotel's guests. And remember we had eaten 10 meals by the time we came to his suggestions.
Another suggestion of Mr Wang was Ma family home - also a very good tip from him.
Everytime we had a request or question he always responded with enthusiasm.
On our last day we checked out at 4am and he still took us to the pick up point at that ungodly hour.
Yep Mr and Mrs Wang's customer service is just first class.
The room was large, queen deluxe double, and the furnishings were traditional chinese furniture made of Rosewood. Very Expensive furniture for a hotel room. Shower worked well and was hot. However be aware its chinese style wet floor system ie there is no shower curtain between the shower and a small part of the bathroom does get wet if youare not careful. MR Wang said it will be one his improvement on his priority list. Hopefully by the time you booked the problem will have been resolved
The hotel is very close to the main streets. About 5 min walk.
The city of pingyao is worth visiting, it is one of the very walled cities left in China, with its old buildings intact and people still living it. All the city walls are also intact. Magnificent at night.
MMethilanI spent nearly a week at Datong Milan/Magnolia Hotel (Dai Residence branch) and it was a very pleasant and enjoyable stay
Location:
- Nestled a quieter part of the ancient city, that provided a peaceful retreat after each day of exploring.
- 10 minutes to some of the attractions of the old town
- 15-20 minute walk to the popular restaurants and more attractions
- 30 minute walk to Huayan Temple and its nearby street markets.
I'm always happy to walk but if needed, I could always use DiDi to take me around.
Falling asleep without street noise is something I like. There is a bit of building work going nearby, which is happening all over Datong Ancient City, but nothing too major.
Nearby is the Ancient City's wall, but walk past that and you can see the locals dance in the morning in the park or walk along the canal/moat in the evening.
Room:
The room was surprisingly spacious, offering plenty of room to spread out and relax, a welcome change from cramped city accommodations. The staircase is a bit narrow, so those with lots of big luggage might struggle (no lift)
Importantly, it was very clean and well equipped. I especially liked the Chinese tea ceremony set!
Service:
- Despite a noticeable language barrier, everyone went above and beyond with smiles, helpful gestures, and clear efforts to communicate.
- Especially the manager, who told me about local food to try, things to do and asked if I needed anything. She noticed that I was bringing back leftovers from the restaurant, and bottled drinks from the shops, and said I could use the fridge.
- I can't speak Chinese so when the delivery driver came to drop off my order, the staff will take it from the reception and bring it to me.
- Unfortunately, breakfast isn't available here
- Drinking water topped up. Humidifier and mosquito repellent were provided when needed.
I will not hesitate to book here again on my next visit and I highly recommend this hotel for anyone seeking comfort and genuine warmth in Datong!

GGuest UserThe location is right at the center of the city. If you drive your own car, it might be challenging to live here as it's too central and always have traffic jam nearby. But if you are not driving then it's the perfect location. Many restaurants nearby, and a bakery right at the corner. there's also a cafe not far away, you can easily get coffee in the morning.
Room is big enough for two persons. Some rooms are facing the main street, it's might getting noisy in the morning. If you mind this, make sure to send email to them in advance to check if your room is facing street...

AAnonymous UserBecause I like big rooms, I booked a family room, and there are extra discounts for staying for three days. The hotel is on the 20th-21st floor of a building next to Datong Railway Station. Downstairs is the Aegean Shopping Park. The second underground floor is the hotel parking lot. You have to pay the parking fee in advance and the hotel will reimburse you later. The room decoration is simple, and towels, cups and other utensils are disposable. The sanitary conditions are good. The first room assigned was next to the laundry room and had a sewage odor, so we were quickly moved to another room. There is a Tonghe Hotel near the train station, which serves authentic Datong cuisine and is not expensive. There is a Fudao Noodle Restaurant on Wuding West Street, 300 meters away from the hotel, which serves breakfast at 6:30, and it tastes good.
黄黄善博The hotel was the priciest that we stayed at during our 45 days in China, though the beds, space, and bathroom were the nicest out of them all. For the price, I would’ve hoped that the staff would’ve been a bit more helpful—no elevator and many bags to carry up the three flights of stairs was really quite difficult. The staff also don’t speak any English at all, and my friend doesn’t speak any Chinese, and we didn’t really understand that you needed to put down a deposit of 100rmb that would then be refunded to you (or that they needed a Chinese phone number too; I didn’t have one, and as a foreigner traveling through China, if I had been by myself or didn’t know or have any Chinese friends with Chinese numbers, I would’ve been unable to check-in).
The hotel was very nice nonetheless. Fantastic location, very close to everything. The walk to the old city wall took about an hour, and would’ve been a ten minute taxi ride. The street the hotel is located on is full of lots of local shops and restaurants, and feels very lively during the day. The staff was also very friendly and enjoyed speaking with the foreigner at the hotel (although I had some trouble understanding the Shanxi accent! Jin Chinese is not my strongest!).
The WiFi was a bit slow. But the beds were incredible. Huge, clean, soft. Pillows were lovely. Bathroom was huge. Just wish there’d been a bit more service from the front desk. Was a tad weird to get up at 5:50am to go to the Hanging Temple 悬空寺, which is very normal, to see the woman at the front desk asleep… it was fine, but still a bit weird.
AAnonymous UserThe room was very clean and the service was very thoughtful and welcoming. This should be the best service I have ever stayed in. The hotel is very good, the furnishings are more comfortable, and it is quite stylish. The guidance service at the front desk can also be done. The accommodation environment is quite quiet at night, and the breakfast type and taste are good. Recommended to stay 100 stars.
