The front desk is very welcoming, but the facilities in our room are really average. The exhaust fan in the toilet is broken, and the toilet door lock can’t be closed. The most speechless thing is that the room is not soundproof. At night, we lie in bed and listen to the chatter and TV sound in the next room Be particularly clear. . My kids can't sleep. .
Astor York Hostel

2519 Great value for money Review of Astor York Pending review I was heading to York for the Christmas market and, knowing that I would spend most of my time out and about, wanted my accommodation to be as inexpensive as possible. A weekend at the Astor York set me back less than £40, and I would say I'm grateful I stayed here for more reasons than just the low price. I hadn't realised that the Christmas market closes quite early, and I found myself back at the hostel earlier than I anticipated. Luckily, there is a common area where you can watch Netflix with the other guests – a nice treat at the end of a cold day. I was admittedly a bit taken aback by the very old-fashioned bathrooms that look straight out of the 1960s. But the hostel was clean and well-maintained. My 30-bed dorm did not feel too crowded, and I was grateful for the cages under beds. My one gripe about the dorm room would be a lack of sockets and lights at beds; it was impossible to charge my phone as I was on the top bunk, so I had to charge it in the common area instead. While I only needed to use the fridge, it looked like the kitchen was well-stocked and spacious. There was also a little bar that did happy hour, though I never made it back early enough to take advantage. The location is a bit of a walk from York's city centre. However, it's quite an easy route, and it's also convenient for accessing the train station. I recommend getting up and out a bit earlier and walking along the ancient wall from Micklegate, which is not far from the hostel. Overall, my stay was great value for money and I'd recommend Astor York to any solo travellers.
Wheatlands Lodge Hotel

Stayed here for three nights while visiting York. While not quite in the centre of town, Wheatlands is only a short walk away, and worth the walk for its calmer, quieter atmosphere. Staff were very friendly. Breakfast every morning was delicious. My room was reasonably clean and comfortable, and felt really cosy. The bathroom fixtures felt a bit dated, but otherwise, no complaints.

I had booked a double room with shared facilities for one night's stay. First impression wasn't good. The front door was damaged, and seemed to be left ajar for guests to go in and out. I was asked to leave a £50 deposit for breakages? There were 2 cups on the windowsill with milk and coffee, but no kettle. There was no remote for the TV. When I washed my hands in the shared bathroom, the top of the tap came off in my hand. I had only been there 5 minutes. I went to find some assistance, and when the manager came to look at the tap he said ”oh, it's broken” he also had trouble getting the light to come on. I asked for another room. The 2nd room I was offered had a kettle, but no cups. The door to the room was really hard to open, and there was a hole around the door handle. The top drawer of the wardrobe was also broken, and there were bits of furniture outside the door on the landing. There were holes all over the wall of the shared bathroom. I asked where the remote was for the TV. I was told that the people who were 'living there' had lost the remote? It seemed that the hotel is used for long term stays, and they do not seem to have been respectful of the facilities. The breakfast consisted of a jug of cornflakes, a jug of orange juice and some bread and butter. I know it was only a 2 star hotel, but the whole experience was quite upsetting. It was awful, and I don't understand how this hotel has passed inspection? I was charged £53 for this stay for one night, and it was the worst hotel I have ever stayed in
Wentworth Arms

This pub has a four-star AA listing, but on current standards it needs a re-grade. Entrance to the bedrooms via the street is via a rotting canopy, unswept floor and dirty, torn carpet. Our room was clean - if you didn't examine the edges of the carpet too closely - but cramped, with an ill-fitting window that rattled in the night. The bathroom tiles were cracked and the only shelf to place toiletries was missing. The only availability for an evening meal was 5.30 or 6pm and breakfast was a not very holiday-friendly 8-9. The cooked-to-order breakfast was good, but there was no choice of fruit or yoghurt to start, just orange juice and boxes of cereal. The outside seating area was scruffy with containers of dead plants and some plastic flowers suspended from the trellis, with overflowing waste containers in the car park. This is no reflection on the staff who we found to be helpful and friendly and the place seemed to be busy with evening meals. But the whole experience compared unfavourably with a nearby pub that was well run, with excellent food and a lovely garden.
The Station Inn Whitby

If you *love* loud house parties and drunk people—this is your place! The smell of fresh paint just *barely* covers up the reek of cigarette smoke wafting in the open windows. On the plus side, there’s a busy street right outside and no parking. If you simply have to stay in the heart of Whitby, you probably could do worse, but you’d pay a lot less than £125 night. The room is nice enough, clean and fairly well-appointed. But you’ll be trying to sleep over a very noisy bar that appears to be very popular with the gauntlet of smokers you’ll have drag your bags through to check-in. Caveat Emptor: I am a woman travelling alone and I really didn’t feel the access to guest rooms was sufficiently secure. The only reason I stayed after realising that guest security wasn’t a priority is that I’d pre-paid.
