"A very pleasant stay at the Pipa Old Inn. A very historical building, though the place is equipped with all necessary modern amenities save for an elevator. Fortunately the staff very helpful assisted us with lugging up our heavy luggage to our room on the 3rd floor. Very beautifully decorated and strategically located in the heart of Datong Ancient City. Very pleasant and helpful staff who helped us plan and arrange our trips around Datong though sadly, they weren't very proficient in English (but that's common in China). Free breakfast was included in our stay and there was a decent spread though the menu didn't change much over our stay there save for one or two vegetable dishes being rotated. Overall definitely worth a return trip and stay in Datong Ancient City."

"Two nights at Laochengenguan was absolutely fantastic! First, it was spotless and well-equipped. Second, the breakfast was abundant and delicious, even coming with fruit. Third, the service was truly top-notch; their patience made us feel right at home! (I booked two nights, but needed to switch rooms in between, which shows how popular this place is. However, on the morning of the second day, we were rushing to Hengshan Hanging Temple and completely forgot about the room change. The owner actually called to check if we’d like to move, as the new room was already cleaned. Of course, we happily agreed! This way, it didn't disrupt our sightseeing, and we could rest as soon as we returned! A big thank you to the owner once again! Staying at Laochengenguan is perfect for visiting attractions and shopping."

"Just realized I forgot to leave a review, so I'm specially coming back to write one! My sister and I stayed here for two days in Datong after attending a wedding in Taiyuan. The courtyard is lovely, and it was so comfortable just relaxing there. They also provide complimentary bicycles, which we used to cycle to attractions like Yanhuasi, Shanhuasi, and the Nine-Dragon Wall, and to explore local eateries nearby. The service was exceptional. Our initial room unfortunately still had a slight renovation smell, even six months after the work was done, so they promptly moved us to a family suite. The front desk staff were very apologetic and even offered us a discount. Later, when I came down with a stomach bug, the owner personally brewed Puer tea for me, chatted, and genuinely checked in on my well-being. We later learned the guesthouse is run by the owner and their friends, which truly explains its wonderfully warm and welcoming atmosphere."

"We had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. The room was very spacious and comfortable, with the toilet and shower separated, which was very convenient. The location is great—just a short Didi (cab) ride to Datong Ancient City.
The service was excellent. The reception staff were very helpful, assisting us with booking a one-day cab to visit the Hanging Temple and giving clear advice on how to get around the city.
There are also a few restaurants and convenience stores within a short walking distance, which made things easy. The hotel itself has a bar and a coffee area, adding to the overall convenience.
Overall, a very good experience."

"It was a little difficult to find the place to check in. This was a nice, clean hotel room. We stayed in a family friendly room. The beds were comfortable and there were drawers and a lot of counter space, a desk, end table, and small table. There were 3 extra pillows in a cabinet. There was an access code, so when someone left others weren't left in the dark and checkout was just a matter of sending a message via WeChat. We really liked this hotel!"

"Nanshe surprised us pleasantly in many ways. First the owner of the homestay came personally to pick us up from the high speed rail station and did an introduction of the Datong old city on the way to the homestay. She is very friendly and took great care of us throughout the 3 days we stayed with them. The caretaker of the homestay is also a gem. She took care of all our outbound travels from Datong and even helped to coordinate the courier of my left-behind charger from the previous hotel in Beijing. When we had to leave early for outbound tours, they even packed breakfast for us to take with us. So a big kudos to the Nanshe premium stay and their top notch staff for making our stay in Datong such an enjoyable one. We will be back again!"

"This is an older hotel, and the decor feels a bit dated. However, you can tell it was once very luxurious and grand. The cleanliness is acceptable, and both the room and bathroom are spacious. If they updated worn items like the chairs (which are old and peeling) and the beds, it would still be a very good hotel. Even my child immediately commented that the bed and pillows weren't as comfortable as Atour's (we had just checked out of an Atour in Beijing). The price for a standard budget hotel already exceeds a five-star, we paid over 1000 there. So, timely updates to aging facilities could not only justify higher prices but also significantly improve the guest experience.
The front desk never mentioned the complimentary bathhouse tickets included with the booking, and since we weren't planning on going, we didn't ask about them. The daily fruit platter was very generous, which was a nice touch. Breakfast offered a good variety, and the lamb offal soup was delicious. The breakfast staff were also very friendly and enthusiastic. You don't need to queue at trendy,网红 spots outside for Chinese food; the hotel's Chinese restaurant is decent and not overpriced. My child particularly loved the croissants there.
The hotel's location is decent; it's quite convenient if you're taking taxis for all your comings and goings."

I'm still reluctant to leave Datong and head down the mountain. First, the hotel's design is incredibly elegant, incorporating local Datong culture into the hotel. This time, we were a family of three with a child. After parking the car and entering the lobby, the child accidentally bumped into the glass, which was very clean. The hotel manager, Manager Lu, immediately addressed the situation. He first checked the child's injury and confirmed there was no bleeding, then applied ice and a towel. The hotel also provided Yunnan Baiyao, which the child was taught how to use.
I was initially a bit disappointed that my child would be injured so soon after arriving, but the staff were incredibly prompt and helpful. They even provided eggs to soothe the bruise, which was a very practical solution. My child's bruise had diminished considerably by the next day.
Environment: The hotel is one of the best in China, both in terms of location and design. The culture isn't just in the hotel; the entire ancient city is worth exploring.
Breakfast: The semi-buffet breakfast 🍳 offers everything from bean noodles to sliced noodles, and it's delicious, comparable to restaurants outside 🍴.
Service: Every staff member here was incredibly friendly and welcoming. I used to worry about the hotel's design, but follow-up service is crucial; if it's subpar, the overall experience will suffer. However, the service at this hotel was incredibly warm and inviting, making for a pleasant chat and enthusiastically answering questions. They also provided excellent explanations of the hotel's design. This truly captivated me and will make me want to try other hotels under this brand in the future.
The design was stunning at first glance, and the service captivated me at second—the warmth felt on my fingertips, the echo lingering in my heart.
If I had to be picky, the only regret would be that ”the date for our next visit hasn't been written on the calendar yet.”
China needs more brands like this that translate culture into everyday life and elevate the everyday into a ritual; and I need to return to make up for this disappointment.

Pingchengfu is located in the courtyard of No. 34, No. 36 and No. 38, Lihuaijiao, Southeast City Historical and Cultural Street in Datong City. Its location is the location of the Imperial Temple and the Altar of the Soochow of the Northern Wei Dynasty during the Pingcheng period, and it was the core area of the ritual system of the Northern Wei Dynasty at that time. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, it gradually became a residential block, and the traditional courtyard pattern has been retained to this day. Dongnanyi Historical and Cultural District is a key cultural and tourism development project in Datong City. It takes the construction concept of "inheriting historical context and retaining the atmosphere of the city". It took five years of restoration and reconstruction through protection, renovation, and repair. It was opened in 2023. The hotel's courtyard No. 38 is one of the reconstructed projects and is a representative traditional house in Southeast City. It is not the kind of thin disposable towel, but a thick, soft, and super-good cotton towel. It is very comfortable to wash your face and hands. The texture is perfect. I instantly felt that the hotel was really willing to spend money on supplies and took care of the guests' demand for quality. This small detail made my favorability towards the hotel soar!

2208363****This B&B is incredibly popular! It has five-star decor, five-star service, and four-star pricing. The location is fantastic, next to the Four Archways, across from the Dai Palace, and a seven- to eight-minute walk from Huayan Temple. Two excellent noodle shops are just outside the door, and the B&B has a breakfast contract with them, offering a variety of set menus. For us southerners, the portions are plentiful and we can't finish them all. The B&B has a small courtyard where you can sit and sip tea or write, which is quite comfortable. The housekeepers were very attentive and even helped us check out late when we left. I'll definitely stay here again next time I'm in Datong and highly recommend it to friends. The only downside is that the smart speaker is a bit annoying, and I became the target of teasing from my children. I also recommend that the laundry room be equipped with disinfectant.

Service details: On the way from picking us up at the South Station to returning to the B&B, the proprietress introduced us to Datong's travel guide and Datong's food, which made me look forward to Datong. When we checked in, she also thoughtfully prepared welcome fruits and snacks, as well as coffee and tea. During your stay, any needs will be responded to promptly, making you feel as comfortable as at home. We came back from a day of fun and were so tired that we didn’t finish our meal. When the boss found out, he even cooked us a bowl of knife-cut noodles. He was so thoughtful. In his spare time, he would chat with us, drink tea, and make freshly ground coffee for us. Treated us like family. On the second day of our stay, the landlady gave us a surprise in the afternoon. She actually went out to buy some delicious jelly and sent it to the room, allowing us to taste the delicacy that we couldn't find on our own. I was touched by the boss lady's enthusiasm towards us.
Hygiene: The room is spotless, the bed is tidy, the mattress is moderately soft and hard, there is no peculiar smell in the bathroom, the toiletries are neatly arranged, and there is no dust even in the corners. It is very safe to stay here. The homestay was opened not long ago, and there is no trace of new decoration in the room. The decoration in the house is very design-oriented, and you can tell at a glance that it has been carefully selected and arranged. The whole house also has intelligent voice control.
Surrounding environment: The location is very good. You can see the ancient city wall in just ten minutes' walk from the Four Archways. The small scenery in the small courtyard of the homestay is also very warm and cute. You can also watch the stars in the courtyard at night, and the atmosphere is perfect.
Breakfast experience: The breakfast is rich and delicious, with local specialty knife-cut noodles (the sauce for the knife-cut noodles is made by the boss lady herself, and the taste is amazing), corn, sweet potatoes, small pumpkins, small cold dishes mixed by the boss lady herself, and fruits. You can eat a full meal every morning and start a full day.
When we left, the proprietress drove us to the jelly shop where she had eaten since she was a child to buy some delicious food, and then took us to the train station. This experience in Datong didn't feel like traveling, it felt like I was visiting relatives. They were so warm, thoughtful and considerate. This B&B is perfect in every aspect. GGuest UserWe took a 23-day trip through China, staying in 9 different hotels. Without hesitation, I can say that our stay at Floral stood out in many ways. First, the hotel's structure is very beautiful and has been renovated while staying true to the traditional style of the region. The hotel room itself was probably the most beautiful we had seen on our entire trip: spacious, with windows that actually opened, good air conditioning, and modern decor and furniture without being over the top. Second, the hotel's location is within the boundaries of the city wall and is part of the old town, so beautiful to walk around and see the traditional houses - many of them renovated according to the traditional style. And third and most importantly, the kindness of the people who work at the hotel. I have never felt so welcome anywhere on holiday as at this place. Unfortunately, I arrived with health problems and needed antibiotics - equivalents of the ones I had brought from Europe. I asked the reception where I could find the closest pharmacy, but rather than guiding me there, Xiao Liu, the lady at the reception, figured out for me which antibiotic would be the right one and got it for me. The same when we needed a suitcase, rather than sending me to the shop she inquired about our desired suitcase and in one hour it was there. Drinks are complementary at any time of the day, and the breakfast (Chinese and international - sandwiches) was generous and unlimited. When we were running late coming back from the grottoes and needed to catch a train, Xiao Liu helped us out by bringing us all our suitcases directly to the train station. We will never forget all these acts of kindness and we are still grateful to her and the entire hotel staff for making us feel so much at home. Datong will stay in our minds and hearts forever thanks to the people of the Floral hotel. Datong is special enough for all the incredible cultural sights you can visit - but our stay there will never be forgotten thanks to the beauty of the Floral Hotel and its amazing people. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

GGuest UserI had the most beautiful time in Datong, and a big part of that was due to my stay at Renyi Inn! First of all, the host is so kind and friendly. She always greets you with a smile. She even brought fresh watermelon for free everyday to my room :) more importantly, the whole hotel as well as the room we're super clean. The interior was so beautifully traditional. And it's only a 3min walk away from the major temple and all the main shopping streets. If you stay in Datong (which you definitely should, it has so much to offer), stay at Renyi Inn!

GGuest UserThe location is right at the center of the city. If you drive your own car, it might be challenging to live here as it's too central and always have traffic jam nearby. But if you are not driving then it's the perfect location. Many restaurants nearby, and a bakery right at the corner. there's also a cafe not far away, you can easily get coffee in the morning.
Room is big enough for two persons. Some rooms are facing the main street, it's might getting noisy in the morning. If you mind this, make sure to send email to them in advance to check if your room is facing street...

AAnonymous UserBecause I like big rooms, I booked a family room, and there are extra discounts for staying for three days. The hotel is on the 20th-21st floor of a building next to Datong Railway Station. Downstairs is the Aegean Shopping Park. The second underground floor is the hotel parking lot. You have to pay the parking fee in advance and the hotel will reimburse you later. The room decoration is simple, and towels, cups and other utensils are disposable. The sanitary conditions are good. The first room assigned was next to the laundry room and had a sewage odor, so we were quickly moved to another room. There is a Tonghe Hotel near the train station, which serves authentic Datong cuisine and is not expensive. There is a Fudao Noodle Restaurant on Wuding West Street, 300 meters away from the hotel, which serves breakfast at 6:30, and it tastes good.

GGuest UserThe location is superb, right within the ancient city. For those driving, parking is available at the Nine Dragon Wall parking lot, just a 100-meter walk away. Despite being in a tourist area, it offers a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle. Guandi Temple is also conveniently located nearby. The service was excellent, and breakfast was quite good too. Both the owner and the staff were incredibly warm and welcoming. Although the May Day holiday prices were significantly higher than usual, the convenience made it completely worthwhile. Highly recommended!

MMethilanI spent nearly a week at Datong Milan/Magnolia Hotel (Dai Residence branch) and it was a very pleasant and enjoyable stay
Location:
- Nestled a quieter part of the ancient city, that provided a peaceful retreat after each day of exploring.
- 10 minutes to some of the attractions of the old town
- 15-20 minute walk to the popular restaurants and more attractions
- 30 minute walk to Huayan Temple and its nearby street markets.
I'm always happy to walk but if needed, I could always use DiDi to take me around.
Falling asleep without street noise is something I like. There is a bit of building work going nearby, which is happening all over Datong Ancient City, but nothing too major.
Nearby is the Ancient City's wall, but walk past that and you can see the locals dance in the morning in the park or walk along the canal/moat in the evening.
Room:
The room was surprisingly spacious, offering plenty of room to spread out and relax, a welcome change from cramped city accommodations. The staircase is a bit narrow, so those with lots of big luggage might struggle (no lift)
Importantly, it was very clean and well equipped. I especially liked the Chinese tea ceremony set!
Service:
- Despite a noticeable language barrier, everyone went above and beyond with smiles, helpful gestures, and clear efforts to communicate.
- Especially the manager, who told me about local food to try, things to do and asked if I needed anything. She noticed that I was bringing back leftovers from the restaurant, and bottled drinks from the shops, and said I could use the fridge.
- I can't speak Chinese so when the delivery driver came to drop off my order, the staff will take it from the reception and bring it to me.
- Unfortunately, breakfast isn't available here
- Drinking water topped up. Humidifier and mosquito repellent were provided when needed.
I will not hesitate to book here again on my next visit and I highly recommend this hotel for anyone seeking comfort and genuine warmth in Datong!

黄黄善博The hotel was the priciest that we stayed at during our 45 days in China, though the beds, space, and bathroom were the nicest out of them all. For the price, I would’ve hoped that the staff would’ve been a bit more helpful—no elevator and many bags to carry up the three flights of stairs was really quite difficult. The staff also don’t speak any English at all, and my friend doesn’t speak any Chinese, and we didn’t really understand that you needed to put down a deposit of 100rmb that would then be refunded to you (or that they needed a Chinese phone number too; I didn’t have one, and as a foreigner traveling through China, if I had been by myself or didn’t know or have any Chinese friends with Chinese numbers, I would’ve been unable to check-in).
The hotel was very nice nonetheless. Fantastic location, very close to everything. The walk to the old city wall took about an hour, and would’ve been a ten minute taxi ride. The street the hotel is located on is full of lots of local shops and restaurants, and feels very lively during the day. The staff was also very friendly and enjoyed speaking with the foreigner at the hotel (although I had some trouble understanding the Shanxi accent! Jin Chinese is not my strongest!).
The WiFi was a bit slow. But the beds were incredible. Huge, clean, soft. Pillows were lovely. Bathroom was huge. Just wish there’d been a bit more service from the front desk. Was a tad weird to get up at 5:50am to go to the Hanging Temple 悬空寺, which is very normal, to see the woman at the front desk asleep… it was fine, but still a bit weird.
