On my trip to Datong, I booked a stay at the Howard Johnson Jindi Plaza Datong, located right by the ancient city, through Trip.com. It's rated 5 stars online, and it truly lives up to the hype! As soon as I checked in, I was upgraded for free to a deluxe business suite. It was my first time seeing a suite with a dining table big enough to host over 10 friends and family. After one night, I switched back to my originally booked business king room. The king room was also incredibly comfortable, measuring a spacious 62 square meters. Opening the curtains revealed views of Datong's streets. If you walk to the end of the corridor, you can even see a panoramic view of the ancient city of Datong. What truly stands out is the fantastic Chinese restaurant at this 5-star hotel. I stayed in Datong for three days, and除了one lunch I had in Hunyuan Ancient City, all my other five lunches and dinners were enjoyed at the hotel's Chinese restaurant. Here, a bowl of Shanxi's specialty knife-cut noodles is only 6 RMB, and a bowl of cold noodles, even tastier than those in Hunyuan, is just 3 RMB. You can order half portions of shumai, and during the first dog days of summer, they even had dumplings. I tried the braised deer tendon with scallions, something I'd never had before, and it was superb, as were the husband and wife lung slices and jellyfish salad – perfect with drinks. Dining here is delicious and affordable. If you top up 200 RMB, you even get a complimentary plate of Shanxi's signature 'guoyourou' (fried pork in sauce). A huge shout-out also goes to the restaurant staff. They are warm, thoughtful, and genuinely care for guests, even advising against ordering too much, ensuring just the right amount! In summary, I give a 5-star rating to both the hotel and the F&B department. The last photo is of the hotel's breakfast, which was also excellent. The hotel has two breakfast restaurants, so even with many guests, it never feels crowded!

The room was very clean, and they upgraded our king-size room to a family room, which was spacious enough for our child to enjoy. The front desk service was very thoughtful, making us feel right at home. It's also not far from the scenic spots, about a 10-minute drive, which is very convenient. Overall, I'm very satisfied! I'll definitely stay here again next time I visit Datong.

After a tiring journey exploring Datong's ancient city and grottoes, I was so glad I chose the Holiday Inn Datong. It provided a wonderfully comfortable sanctuary for my trip. The hotel's location is perfect—peaceful yet centrally located. The lush greenery in the courtyard immediately calmed my frazzled nerves, and the soft lighting in the public areas created a tranquil atmosphere; there was no noise or chaos, just a sense of calm the moment I stepped inside. What impressed me most was the impeccable cleanliness. The housekeeping wasn't just superficial; the bedding was fluffy and odorless, the shower glass and drain edges were spotless, and the entire room was free from any dampness or dust. The room facilities were new and smart, hot water was instantaneous, the mattress was perfectly comfortable, and the blackout curtains effectively blocked out external noise, ensuring a solid night's sleep after a long day. The staff had just the right amount of attentiveness – never intrusive, but always quick and efficient in responding to any requests. They even thoughtfully shared some local, lesser-known food recommendations. From the environment and facilities to the cleanliness and service, every detail showed genuine care. It wasn't just a one-night stay; it was a haven that healed my travel fatigue. When I return to Datong, this will definitely be my top choice again.

Traveling to Datong with kids, I chose the Hampton by Hilton just outside the ancient city. The hotel's surroundings are great, with a park and a lake, and it's not far from the ancient city, about a 20-minute drive. The room was very clean, with a king bed and a sofa bed, perfect for a family trip. The 'Dao Xiao Mian' (knife-cut noodles) and lamb offal at breakfast were both delicious. The front desk service was warm and attentive, and they even gave us a bottle of aged vinegar as a gift!

The hotel occupies two floors, the ninth and tenth, and the rooms are spacious. All facilities are almost brand new. The entire room is smart home; the bathroom nightlight is sensor-activated, only illuminating when you enter the bathroom at night, so the light won't disturb your partner's sleep. The mattress is also very comfortable and supportive. I slept soundly and felt refreshed. The room's cleanliness and soundproofing are excellent. I'm seventy years old and very sensitive to noise; even the slightest sound will wake me up, but I slept very comfortably here, even more comfortably than at home. The young lady at the hotel reception was incredibly helpful and enthusiastic. She assisted us with various issues and enthusiastically introduced us to different restaurants and attractions in Datong. She helped us integrate into the local life as soon as we arrived in the city. My partner said that she alone would make it worthwhile to come back to Datong again. This hotel will be my only choice for my next trip.

Family room. Let's start with the positives. The location is convenient. The staff is friendly and responsive. Welcome fruit, a children's toothbrush, and slippers are provided upon check-in. Breakfast is also acceptable. A souvenir is also provided upon check-out. These are all very good. However, the design of this room type feels a bit lackluster. It's more suitable for couples. Upon entering, there's a large bathtub in front of the queen-size bed. The shower is only partially covered. There's only a hollow wooden partition between the two queen-size beds. Only the bathroom is fully enclosed. Since the room is on the top floor, the three small, one-square-meter windows are raised and lowered from the ceiling. During heavy rain, they can't be opened for fresh air. The air conditioning is not very good. I contacted the front desk to request a small fan, which finally circulates the air in the inner room. I would appreciate a shower curtain in the bathroom and curtains for the partition. Even for a family, curtains are at least necessary.

The location of the hotel is good, easy access from main road to get big bags to it and also to go around the ancient city both during day and night time to enjoy all the landmarks. Missing signages make it a bit difficult to find the hotel at first. Also, while we had paid for a bigger rooms the room barely had walking space. It had no luggage storage space or cabinet. The washroom and room floor was not cleaned. Staff on the other hand are very friendly and willing to help with all the questions - on local travel, places to see, vegetarian food, etc. They find a way to help to the best. All in all was a good experience and would have been better with some adjustments.
