Hotel Ligo by HappyCulture
9.0 (133 reviews)

Hotel Ligo by HappyCulture ★★★★

📍 14-16 Rue Jean Trinquet, 2nd Arrondissement, Marseille

"First, the positives: The breakfast was fantastic, and the coffee was great, which is a rare find at this price point. The room had a kettle, and the front desk staff were incredibly friendly and helpful! The hotel is a convenient 10-minute walk to the Old Port. The lobby offered free coffee and croissants. I was really worried about service staff in France only speaking French, but everyone at this hotel spoke excellent English. Now for the issues I encountered: Initially, I was given a room on the fourth floor. When I pulled back the covers, I found a significant amount of hair on the pillows, which seemed to be a mix of human and animal hair (this hotel is pet-friendly). Lifting the duvet revealed even more hair, making it seem like the cleaning staff hadn't changed the bedding at all. The front desk immediately offered me another room on the same floor. After moving my luggage, I still found a small amount of hair when I pulled back the covers in the new room. I then asked the front desk for a fresh set of sheets and duvet covers. They offered to move me again, this time to a room on the 6th floor. This room was much better, but the pillowcases had yellow stains on all four corners. I requested new pillowcases from the front desk and changed them myself. One minor concern: The hotel isn't on the main street and is a bit close to the train station, which made me slightly uneasy walking around at night."

"Superiorly located apartment-style hotel with very good reception staff for luggage storage. Value for money next to the station. The bungalows have sofa beds, no elevator, not recommended for those who have difficulty walking up the stairs, and those who are afraid of night noise (currently working 24 hours from St. Charles Station across the street). Clean, bright, plenty of towels, spacious and beautifully designed kitchen and bathroom, very pleasant place."

"Everyone spoke English and was very helpful, but the air conditioning didn’t work. Evidently it wasn’t working for anyone! I was allowed to borrow a fan, but definitely needed to open a window also. At this point, being so close to the hospital (ambulances) wasn’t great. Couldn’t be helped though."

"I chose this hotel because it's close to the train station, making it convenient to take the airport express the next day. The location is excellent, just steps from the metro station, only two stops from the Old Port. Most of Marseille's attractions are around the Old Port. The hotel doesn't have many rooms, and the rooms are a moderate size; having two large suitcases open makes movement a bit restrictive. Breakfast is included in the room rate. The breakfast selection is limited, but the courtyard where you eat breakfast is quite pleasant; you can have a coffee there afterward."

Residhotel le Grand Prado ★★★
"The room looks nothing like the photos shown on the platform. The floor was sticky, and the lighting was very dim. You also have to pay an extra fee for room cleaning, which is very disappointing. At first, they even gave us a room that was already occupied by someone else — it made us feel really unsafe. It was a very unpleasant experience."

"A very old hotel that has seen minimal upkeep. Fantastic location at the Old Port of Marseille - safe and just above the metro station. Service was average, besides some helpful front desk, the housekeeping needs improvement."

"Quite a downgrade from its Japanese counterpart. While it's near the train station, it's not very convenient if you have luggage, as there are several stairs to navigate. Breakfast was just passable. On the bright side, you can walk to the Old Port!"

Ibis Budget Marseille Vieux-Port ★★
"Nice, relatively small room in the center of M****ille. It's close to the city center and just around the corner from a square full of restaurants for dinner and brunch. The service was friendly and quick, and we really appreciated the free, drinkable water dispenser in the lobby! There's also a Lidl supermarket down the street for small groceries. The only minor drawback was that the toilet flush wasn't very powerful."

"We were unable to stay due to unexpected work commitments, and we requested a refund for the two nights. The hotel refused, which we find extremely disappointing. Their outdated and inflexible policies show a lack of understanding and customer care. We do not recommend this hotel based on this experience."
