Pension Eastmountain Hakuba
8.5/56 Reviews
Let me start with the good parts:  - The location is convenient, with lots of restaurants, cafes, and rental shops nearby. They also work with Hakuba Lion Adventure, so we got some great discounts for rentals.  - The room was very clean and well-equipped, they also have a dry room for snow gears.  - Breakfast was freshly made every morning, with a nice variety and really delicious food.   However, our experience was tainted by communication issues with the owner. Upon arrival, he realized we had come by car and immediately scolded us for not informing him in advance. He claimed to have messaged us about it, but we later discovered he was talking about *********** while we had booked via Trip.com. Since no parking was reserved for us, we had to use a nearby rental space for 1,000 yen per night. We accepted this, understanding that parking is limited during snow season. Until the third night, our car got stuck in the snow, so we went to ask for help. Instead of assisting us, the owner started blaming us again, saying he had already sent us a message telling us not to drive because of the heavy snow. But we were very confused because we double checked all our booking platform messages and emails there was NO such message at all. So before we checked out, we brought this up again and the owner just said, “Well, that’s not my fault, and I don't recommend booking platforms such as Agoda, Trip.com or *******”. This place is quite a disappointment. The location itself is great, and the breakfasts were amazing, but the owner’s attitude completely ruined the experience. To make things even more frustrating, the owners speak Mandarin (as does one of us) and a bit of English, yet the owner insisted on speaking Japanese, fully aware that we didn’t understand it. It almost seemed like he was pretending to be Japanese. If you’re expecting authentic Japanese hospitality, this is not the place. I genuinely liked the place and even considered staying for a week to work remotely, but the owner’s behavior made that impossible. Who wants to be scolded multiple times during a vacation?
Matsumoto Wellton Hotel

The front desk Nepal staff is helpful. It’s quite far from the station. Unfortunately, I came there on a snowy day, and it was terrible to walk to the station. It's an old building and there is no room for nonsmoking and the lobby has a bad smoking smell.
Kakehashi Onsen
8.9/54 Reviews
The staff really went above and beyond to make two ignorant Canadian tourists feel extremely welcome at a traditional Japanese Ryuken. Though there was a small language barrier, we never felt that we could not communicate our needs. The hot and cold onsen was very refreshing after walking post towns along the Nakasendo Way. The river next to the hotel made for a relaxing experience and deep sleep. Somehow, I missed the option when booking to select the dinner option, there is really no other food options in the area, and the clerk (owner) said he would put a 'simple meal' together for us for a small charge which we found acceptable. The kaiseki that followed was some of the best and most authentic Japanese food we experienced in our two weeks in Japan. The woman serving us was an absolute gem and the cat that ran the establishment was adorable. Our room was very comfortable and had a nice sitting area with a view of the river. Only points of contention would be that that it's a little out of the way if you don't have a car, but is conveniently accessable by bus with ~10 minute walk. The facilities are a little dated, the onsen is discoloured, but I assume that is from the natural minerals. There was a stale smell (smoke) in the rooms which is a bit off-putting to non-smokers. It would appear smoking is allowed in the facility which might be a plus to some.
Fukashiso

Fukashiso could be one of the loveliest accommodation that I have ever stayed at. The staff were very polite, attentive and extremely helpful and courteous. The place itself is so beautiful and quaint. Traditional garments are provided as an option if you want to dress up for dinner. Made for great photo ops! The Kaiseki was the most beautiful equivalent of a degustation I’ve tried, and it was served in a lovely separate intimate dining area. During dinner Nobu-San a fourth generation family member of the owners greeted us which was a lovely touch. Soba was freshly made at the accomodation. We stayed two nights and the Kaiseki menu was different each time. Breakfast was a nice assortment of Japanese and Western options and the coffee machine was actually pretty good. I enjoyed the onsens, there are two public ones that switch locations for men and women and a private one. They were well equipped and relaxing. Our room was on Level 1 with a private bathroom, seating area and little garden view. Overall this place is highly recommended. For a traditional ryokan experience, it was so nice. Even after we checked out, the receptionist gave us a little gift, and even walked us outside to where our car was parked. Such a warm and lovely place. Stay here for sure!

I rarely complain about others when I write reviews for B&Bs, because I think the service industry is not easy, and I try to say good things if I can, but this time I have to complain about this one! We have been to Yudanaka 4 times and stayed in 8 different B&Bs. The first 3 times, the store provided pick-up/drop-off/snow monkey park services, so this time we did not confirm in advance. Unexpectedly, some stores do not provide this service (very few), and Tenkawaso is one of them! After arriving at Yudanaka Station, I called the boss and spent half a day (the boss's English was not good, and communication was more difficult). He drove to pick us up, and everything went smoothly. On the morning of the day we left, it was snowing heavily. We asked the boss to take us to the station, but he flatly refused, saying that they did not provide drop-off service (paying the taxi fare was not an option), and they did not help us call a taxi (it was difficult to get through on the phone, and they spoke Japanese). Later, we met a family of four Australian guests. They asked to be dropped off at the station one day in advance, but they were also refused (they said that the boss actually came to the station to pick us up, which was incredible). Later, they asked a Japanese friend to book a taxi, and they also thought the boss was mean! Finally, we could only carry our suitcases (the ground was covered with snow and we couldn't pull them), walked for 8 minutes to the bus station, waited for 25 minutes in the heavy snow (the bus was 20 minutes late), and rushed into the train at the last minute before the train started. The whole process was exciting and sad! I hope everyone can avoid this, or at least ask about the pick-up/drop-off service in advance. Most homestays don't have this problem, but it will be very troublesome if you encounter it!

I liked this inn very much, so it is the fourth repeater this time. Just beside Togakushi Jinja shrine, the meal is delicious, so I brought my mother this time. The meal at night was very delicious, but the breakfast was less than before and was not enough. Also, the room was on the second floor and the stairs were steep, so it seems that it was not very good for my mother.

Garden Pension Obergurgl

Wonderful Stay at Garden Pension Obogurgl We had an excellent experience at Garden Pension Obogurgl. The location is perfect—just a short walk to the Hakuba Goryu lifts, which made getting on the mountain super easy every day. The pension itself is cozy, clean, and peaceful, with a lovely garden that adds to the charm. Our room was warm and comfortable, with plenty of space for ski gear, and the communal areas had a relaxed, homely vibe. The hosts were friendly and welcoming, always happy to help with local tips and transport advice. We especially enjoyed being able to walk everywhere—whether it was to the nearby convenience stores, local restaurants, or just strolling among the beautiful pine trees. The large cherry blossom tree out the front added a special touch to the peaceful surroundings. If you're after a quiet, scenic, and welcoming place to stay in Hakuba Goryu, Garden Pension Obogurgl is a fantastic choice.

The place is fantastic for family vacation. We got there by train and the resort has arranged for a complimentary pick up. The cabin is nice and warm with a full functional kitchen (except for the microwave which kept tripping the circuit breaker). We ran out of food as we under estimated our appetite during winter. Unfortunately the centre house only serve coffee and hot soup, so we have to ration our bread on our last day of stay. My boys had fun playing with the snow and built 2 snowmen (the first one was destroyed by the blizzard on the 2nd day). We rented the snow shoes and tried to go trekking but failed as the snow was too thick. However we still had fun. We spent the nights in the cabin playing card games, something we didn’t have time to do when living in the city. Really enjoying the nice scenery and the wonder white Christmas.
Raki Onsenryokan
9.4/521 Reviews
Located just within 3min from Yudanaka station, Raki Onsenryokan is run by a Chinese family. As a quiet town on its own, no one was tending to the reception when I arrived, after ringing the bell, a lady came down to help with the check in - very straightforward. I believe the family stays in the same building as they said if we ever needed anything, we could just ring the bell at the reception. Obviously I had booked a room too big for a solo traveller as this was the only room left as ”non-smoking”. Toilet and sink are at two different parts of the room which was a little inconvenient. Ryokan offers free drive (15min) TO snow monkey park, but not return, so please cater at least 35min to walk from park exit to the bus stop. Ryokan also provided a hearty breakfast, overall for the price paid it was a decent stay!
