Kyoto has many temples, shrines, and traditional neighborhoods, but they are spread across different parts of the city. The Kyoto subway makes some journeys faster, especially when roads and buses are crowded. With only two subway lines, the system is much easier to understand than the train networks in Tokyo or Osaka.
Overview of Kyoto Subway Lines
The Kyoto City Subway has two lines. The Karasuma Line travels north and south, while the Tozai Line travels east and west. They meet at Karasuma Oike Station, the main transfer point in the network.

The station codes are easy to follow. Karasuma Line stations use the letter K, while Tozai Line stations use the letter T. For example, Kyoto Station is K11 and Nijojo-mae Station is T14.

Kyoto Subway Karasuma Line
The Karasuma Line is marked green and uses the letter K. It runs through central Kyoto from Kokusaikaikan in the north to Takeda in the south. This is the only subway line serving Kyoto Station, so many visitors will use it during their trip.

The Tozai Line is marked vermilion-orange and uses the letter T. It runs from Rokujizo in eastern Kyoto to Uzumasa Tenjingawa in the west. It is useful for reaching Nijo Castle, Higashiyama, Sanjo, and connections to JR, Keihan, and Randen.

Kyoto Subway Operating Hours
Kyoto City Subway trains generally operate from around 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM. First and last train times depend on the station, direction, day, and whether the service continues onto another railway.

Single Journey Ticket
Buy a single ticket from a station ticket machine before entering the gate. Check the fare map above the machine, select the correct amount, and keep the ticket until you exit.
Credit and debit cards cannot currently be used to pay Kyoto City Subway fares directly. Use cash, an IC card, or a valid transport pass.
IC Card
An IC card is the easiest option for most visitors. Kyoto City Subway accepts ICOCA, Suica, PASMO, PiTaPa, and other compatible Japanese transport cards.

How to Use the Kyoto Subway
Step 1: Check Your Line and Station Code
Find your starting station and destination on the Kyoto Subway Map. Look for the K code on the Karasuma Line or the T code on the Tozai Line.
Step 2: Buy a Ticket or Prepare Your IC Card
Buy a single ticket, use a valid day pass, or make sure your IC card has enough balance.
Step 3: Enter Through the Correct Gate
Insert your ticket or tap your IC card at the gate. Keep the ticket because you will need it when leaving.
Step 4: Check the Train Direction
Look at the final station shown on the platform sign. On the Karasuma Line, trains travel toward Kokusaikaikan or Takeda. On the Tozai Line, the main directions are Rokujizo and Uzumasa Tenjingawa.
Step 5: Transfer at Karasuma Oike
Follow the signs for the other subway line. You do not need to exit the paid area when transferring between the Karasuma and Tozai lines.
Step 6: Check Your Exit Number
Look at the station map before going upstairs. Choosing the correct exit can save you from a long walk.

It is a very nice hotel with attentive staff! The hotel is about a 7 minutes walk from Kyoto station. It’s a very convenient place to stay if you’re catching an early train or arriving from a late one. I don’t know if I’d recommend it for a longer stay since the area is quite boring. There’s plenty of restaurants and shops within the station but they’re very crowded and more expensive. It’s also quite far away from the main sights of Kyoto, so for a longer stay I’d recommend staying downtown. The included room amenities are good but nothing special. There’s shaving kits, towels, haircare, skincare, tea, water, and yukata robes (the robes are not souvenirs). There’s a pool, a spa area, and a restaurant, which all have an additional fee. My room was clean, but I found some scuff marks on the walls and a crack in my bathtub. From Kyoto station you can see Kyoto tower but it’s not an amazing sight hahaha. I stayed at this hotel for the entire three-day trip to Kyoto. The location of the hotel is not bad. It takes a few minutes to walk to the Kamogawa River, and about ten minutes to walk to Takashimaya? Just take a walk.
The variety of breakfast is incomparable to that in China. The bread is quite good. I also saw his bakery in Osaka Takashimaya.
The room area is considered large in Japan, and the hygiene is also OK. Dyson hair dryer, free mask, whitening sensitive skin should be used with caution.

The hotel is nested in a quiet corner, within walking distance of Sagaogurayama Tabuchiyamacho. Im however a bit disappointed with the limited facilites it offered when compared to the price we paid.
We stayed in the Tsukinone Twin Room which is on the third floor of the building. The view is pleasant. The room is of decent size. Yet there were no public onsens. We need to pay YEN5000 for 45 minutes and there are only 2 private onsens.
For more luxurious rooms with private onsen, the one I visited was on the ground level with no views as it were by the pathway to the reception , separated by wooden planks.
We paid around Yen5000 for the breakfast in the hotel, Both western and japanese breakfasts were offered. We tried both. It is of standard. The 4 different juices presented on the top of the bento box was impressive.

Excellent location in Central Kyoto, right in the heart of shopping district, plenty of food options, and a short walk to Gion on the East. Very near to Hankyu train station that goes to Osaka Umeda.
Staff were so friendly, always smiling and ready to assist. Rooms on the smaller side, not sure if it's the layout that made it feel more cramped, but Japan hotel rooms are generally like that.
Best thing about this hotel is the open air natural hot spring! Amazing view of the mountains and you can even see Kiyomizu Dera temple in the distance. The water temperature was also not burning hot like some other public baths.
There are complimentary drinks (including alcohol) on the rooftop terrace everyday from 4.30 to 6pm. Also free drinks from coffee machine all day in the lounge.

The first day I arrived I had a stomach issue and the hotel was really kind and helped send fresh ginger tea up to my room and requested. They went out out of their way to find me fresh ginger.
The second day I strained my back from lifting heavy luggage. They are once again very kind and send a staff to help me pack all my belongings and help me coordinate sending my luggage to Tokyo so I don’t need to lift it on the train. Had a perfect stay at Tennen Osaka Onsen during our Kyoto trip.

The portions were large, but it was a pain to finish it all at the end, which was disappointing, even though it was delicious.

The facilities:
- The guest rooms are old, but well kept.
- The open-air bath on the top floor was pleasant. I think the open-air bath needs to be cleaned and maintained a little better.
The inn's staff are close to each other, so you can get a glimpse of how well they work. I hope that the inn will continue to be an easy place to work for both the staff who have been contributing for many years and the new staff.

First of all, the transportation is very convenient, just one minute walk from Gojo Station, the public areas are beautifully landscaped, our room just happened to see Kyoto Tower and Higashi Honganji Temple downstairs (worth a visit, very large and exquisite), Nishi Honganji Temple is a world heritage site but has not been redecorated, not as beautiful as Higashi Honganji Temple.

There are many small convenience stores nearby (7-Eleven and the like), as well as two large supermarkets — Life is open until midnight, which is a huge plus. You can buy nice gifts for friends and family late in the evening without wasting daytime hours.
The transportation access is great too: within a few minutes' walk there's a subway station and a JR line (convenient for coming from the railway station), and right next to the hotel there's a bus stop. This is important because Kyoto's sights are scattered all over the city, and you often need to use public transport or taxis.
Speaking of taxis. Twice I asked the reception to call me a taxi, and both times the staff helped me — a huge thank you to them! It was especially important on the first day: thanks to a taxi, I made it to Kiyomizu-dera Temple in time and explored it without rushing.
Check-in was very quick, and the staff explained where everything was.
The room was quite spacious — or maybe it just felt that way. I comfortably unpacked my suitcase and took out everything I needed without feeling cramped. The room had all the essentials, and there were kettles near the elevator that you could take to your room if needed. I did, and had some tea before bed (on the first floor, you can grab a free tea bag if you don't have your own).
The air conditioner worked for both cooling and heating — which was very useful on some evenings. Honestly, I only used the hotel to sleep, and it was perfectly fine.
Every morning, breakfast is served on the first floor. To be honest, I expected something simple since the room rate was quite affordable. That's why the breakfast was such a pleasant surprise! My eyes wandered every morning at the variety of delicious food! A huge selection. Every day I had rice with various toppings, amazing salmon, cod, and various vegetables (the okra here was especially good).
There's a small smoking room on the first floor with good ventilation.
My overall impression of the hotel is extremely positive. I will definitely stay here again on my next visit to Kyoto.FromPHP 2,163

I loved this place! It was right in front of the metro station, so it wasn't hard to get to at all. It had two different thermal baths, and there was no one there at night. They gave us a yukata to wear when we left the onsen or for sleeping, and it was very comfortable. There's a free coffee and hot chocolate machine that's really good. The breakfast the next day was delicious, and I left very satisfied.
After we checked out, they stored our luggage for us, charging ¥300 per bag. It's a good option because the lockers at the station fill up, and storing luggage elsewhere is very expensive.FromPHP 2,948

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay here. The decor really added to the atmosphere of the place and there was a lovely communal area for relaxing. This offered different seating areas with access to free tea and coffee, a microwave and mini oven. The hotel is directly above a 7/eleven so it was very convenient for bringing in food to eat. There was a laundry room but it was very busy and the washing machine didn't sound very happy and the drying seemed to take people a long time. We were glad to have done washing before arriving here. The room was quite big and the bed was on a raised platform so cases could be stored underneath. It was very dark in the room because of the decor. We did sleep well. The bathroom was very modern and clean with a wet room style shower. All areas of the hotel were very clean throughout our stay and staff were visibly working to maintain a high standard. Kyoto was extremely busy at the time of our stay (during golden week) so we focused our visits to places that could be walked to or accessed from the Kiyomizu-Gojo Station on the Keihan Line. I had a great stay at this hotel, especially as a manga fan. The room was clean, and I received fresh towels every day. Amenities such as toiletries could be picked up from the reception area, which was very convenient.
