Kyoto has many temples, shrines, and traditional neighborhoods, but they are spread across different parts of the city. The Kyoto subway makes some journeys faster, especially when roads and buses are crowded. With only two subway lines, the system is much easier to understand than the train networks in Tokyo or Osaka.
Overview of Kyoto Subway Lines
The Kyoto City Subway has two lines. The Karasuma Line travels north and south, while the Tozai Line travels east and west. They meet at Karasuma Oike Station, the main transfer point in the network.

The station codes are easy to follow. Karasuma Line stations use the letter K, while Tozai Line stations use the letter T. For example, Kyoto Station is K11 and Nijojo-mae Station is T14.

Kyoto Subway Karasuma Line
The Karasuma Line is marked green and uses the letter K. It runs through central Kyoto from Kokusaikaikan in the north to Takeda in the south. This is the only subway line serving Kyoto Station, so many visitors will use it during their trip.

The Tozai Line is marked vermilion-orange and uses the letter T. It runs from Rokujizo in eastern Kyoto to Uzumasa Tenjingawa in the west. It is useful for reaching Nijo Castle, Higashiyama, Sanjo, and connections to JR, Keihan, and Randen.

Kyoto Subway Operating Hours
Kyoto City Subway trains generally operate from around 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM. First and last train times depend on the station, direction, day, and whether the service continues onto another railway.

Single Journey Ticket
Buy a single ticket from a station ticket machine before entering the gate. Check the fare map above the machine, select the correct amount, and keep the ticket until you exit.
Credit and debit cards cannot currently be used to pay Kyoto City Subway fares directly. Use cash, an IC card, or a valid transport pass.
IC Card
An IC card is the easiest option for most visitors. Kyoto City Subway accepts ICOCA, Suica, PASMO, PiTaPa, and other compatible Japanese transport cards.

How to Use the Kyoto Subway
Step 1: Check Your Line and Station Code
Find your starting station and destination on the Kyoto Subway Map. Look for the K code on the Karasuma Line or the T code on the Tozai Line.
Step 2: Buy a Ticket or Prepare Your IC Card
Buy a single ticket, use a valid day pass, or make sure your IC card has enough balance.
Step 3: Enter Through the Correct Gate
Insert your ticket or tap your IC card at the gate. Keep the ticket because you will need it when leaving.
Step 4: Check the Train Direction
Look at the final station shown on the platform sign. On the Karasuma Line, trains travel toward Kokusaikaikan or Takeda. On the Tozai Line, the main directions are Rokujizo and Uzumasa Tenjingawa.
Step 5: Transfer at Karasuma Oike
Follow the signs for the other subway line. You do not need to exit the paid area when transferring between the Karasuma and Tozai lines.
Step 6: Check Your Exit Number
Look at the station map before going upstairs. Choosing the correct exit can save you from a long walk.

We had a great stay at Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel with our family and really enjoyed our time there.
The location is hard to beat — it's right above Nagoya Station and surrounded by restaurants, cafés, department stores, and shopping malls. It made everything so easy, whether we were heading out for sightseeing, grabbing a quick meal, or doing a bit of shopping.
Our room was clean, comfortable, and had amazing views of the city. It was the perfect place to relax and recharge after a busy day exploring Nagoya. The hotel itself was very well maintained, and everything felt clean and welcoming throughout our stay.
The staff were also great — friendly, professional, and always happy to help.
The only small downside was the parking, which was a little confusing to figure out at first. Some clearer directions for hotel guests would make the experience even smoother.

The hotel is conveniently connected to one of the exits of Nagoya Station, which was a huge plus for us on both sunny and rainy days—especially since it rained during part of our stay!
I stayed at this hotel twice: once when I first arrived in Nagoya, and again after returning from a 2D1N trip outside the city before flying home. I'm so glad I chose Mitsui both times!
As all the guest rooms are located above the 18th floor, the views were fantastic. From our room, we enjoyed a beautiful bird's-eye view of Nagoya City. In fact, I almost felt like I didn't need to visit the observation deck on the 51st floor of JR Central Towers to enjoy the city skyline!
The service was excellent as well. The hotel kindly stored our luggage while we were away on our overnight trip. When we returned to check in for our second stay, we were pleasantly surprised to find that our luggage had already been moved to our room without us even having to ask. A big thank you to the staff for being so attentive and proactive in preparing everything before we arrived.
Besides its excellent location next to Nagoya Station, there is a FamilyMart and a 7-Eleven directly opposite the hotel. There's also a Mister Donut across the road, where we grabbed breakfast and snacks before heading out each day.
Overall, I honestly have nothing to complain about. The location, service, and comfort all exceeded my expectations, and I would definitely stay here again when I visit Nagoya.FromPHP 6,947

This is a local Japanese hotel chain. The facilities are decorated in a Japanese style. Although it opened many years ago, it's still very comfortable overall. The rooms aren't huge, but they have all the necessary functions. For dining, the hotel has buffet, Japanese, Chinese, and French restaurants on the first and second floors, and the quality is consistently good. The location is very convenient, not far from the Sakae shopping district and the subway station. There's also a direct bus from Chubu Centrair Airport (NGO), so everything you need for food, drinks, and entertainment is within reach. The service was excellent. This was my first stay at the Hilton Nagoya. It's about a 1000 yen taxi ride from Nagoya Station, so the location is pretty good. If you're using public transport, there are bus options, but the subway station is a bit of a walk. The room was spacious and well-maintained. I accidentally left something behind, and after emailing them, the hotel successfully sent it to my next hotel, which I really appreciate. A big thank you to Imai from housekeeping! The 'magic hotline' answered immediately, and the overall service was great – definitely good value for money. It is a very nice hotel with attentive staff! The hotel is about a 7 minutes walk from Kyoto station. It’s a very convenient place to stay if you’re catching an early train or arriving from a late one. I don’t know if I’d recommend it for a longer stay since the area is quite boring. There’s plenty of restaurants and shops within the station but they’re very crowded and more expensive. It’s also quite far away from the main sights of Kyoto, so for a longer stay I’d recommend staying downtown. The included room amenities are good but nothing special. There’s shaving kits, towels, haircare, skincare, tea, water, and yukata robes (the robes are not souvenirs). There’s a pool, a spa area, and a restaurant, which all have an additional fee. My room was clean, but I found some scuff marks on the walls and a crack in my bathtub. From Kyoto station you can see Kyoto tower but it’s not an amazing sight hahaha. The hotel is conveniently located directly across from JR Kyoto Station, making it super easy to find. The room size was decent, especially for the king-size bed I booked, which I really liked. It's incredibly convenient for getting around, particularly for JR lines – no need to rush at all. The absolute highlight was the breakfast! There was such a wide variety, including sushi 🍣, various alcoholic beverages, cheese, salads, and grilled meats. We stayed at Hotel Gracery Kyoto for two nights and overall had a very comfortable stay. The hotel has two sections, and we stayed in the South building. The room was very clean, and the space was used efficiently, which is typical for Japan.
The bathroom layout was a bit unusual. The toilet and shower are separate, which is convenient, but the toilet cubicle itself is extremely small. The shower is positioned in an odd space between the bath and what seems to be the shower floor, and the shower head cannot be adjusted up or down. That said, the water pressure and temperature were excellent, which made up for the layout.
Bottled water was provided on the first day, which was appreciated. The TV, however, was very limited with only Japanese channels and no access to Netflix or other streaming services.
The location is excellent. The hotel is right by Nishiki Market and surrounded by shops and restaurants, with multiple subway lines nearby. There are also many fantastic local restaurants in the area, which we highly recommend, especially when the market gets overwhelmingly busy.
The hotel provides a wide range of amenities in the lobby, including face wash, toner, lotion, razors, combs and mouthwash. While convenient, the large amount of individually packaged items does not feel particularly environmentally friendly.
We checked out the breakfast one morning but decided not to purchase it as it was 2750 yen per person, and there are plenty of better and more affordable options nearby.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and we also appreciated that the hotel offers free umbrella use on rainy days, which was a thoughtful touch.
One downside was the room cleaning timing. We left early in the morning and only returned after 3pm, but the room was still being cleaned when we got back. We were asked to wait around 30 minutes, which was quite inconvenient after a long day when we wanted to rest, shower and freshen up before heading out again.
Overall, a clean and well-located hotel with a few minor design quirks and service timing issues, but still a very pleasant stay.FromPHP 2,693

Located on the 2nd floor, accessible by elevator from the central square exit, this hotel is incredibly convenient. It exudes the charm of a classic, established hotel. For breakfast, there's Ogawa and Yakiniku Hiro right across the street. We also found the best value for money meal near Komero Park – picture 4 shows a meal that was only 5000+ yen! Kinkaku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera are definitely worth visiting, and the Biwako Valley ski resort was stunning. The aquarium is good too. Kyoto isn't a huge city, but it attracts a lot of European tourists, so there are plenty of hotels around Kyoto Station. This one isn't far from the apartment where Xiaobao stayed for his Japanese training, and it has a Japanese-style public bath on the first floor that's free for guests to use.
Even though it was only early summer in May, the sun in Kyoto was quite intense. As soon as I entered the hotel's dark corridor, looking at the outdoor greenery through the glass curtain wall immediately gave me a feeling of coolness.
I booked a 4-night stay, but for some reason, the Ctrip reservation automatically changed to 3 nights in a double room + 1 night in a triple room with three single beds. Plus, there was an additional nightly accommodation tax.
**Environment:** The rooms aren't small by Japanese standards, I guess! The double room on the third floor for the first three nights was fine. However, the triple room on the fifth floor for the last night definitely had a very weak hot water supply – it was like a tiny trickle. Luckily, it was warm, so washing with cooler water was manageable.
**Service:** Luggage storage is available. Japanese hotels generally have a check-in time of 3:00 PM and a check-out time of 11:00 AM. The customer service desk on the first floor offers free small popsicles and mini chocolate ice cream bars.
Overall, it was decent. There were many European tour groups (elderly groups) staying there. There's a Lawson, a 7/11, and an AEON supermarket nearby, as well as many restaurants.FromPHP 2,930

Highly recommend! This hotel offers the best location for its price point. It's literally across the street from Kyoto Station, about 100 meters away. You can even see the train platforms from your room window. Superb experience in Nohga. Everything here has been curated very carefully, you can tell the people or group behind this whole hotel concept really put in so much thought for their guests.
Absolutely loved my entire stay here. I eat breakfast at their bakery every morning. Love their customisable bagels, mortadella sandwich, salted bun and cinnamon mochi donut. Chocolate mochi donut was a little too sweet. Americano and matcha latte were great.
Thoroughly enjoyed their rooftop bar every night (opens till 12am). Awesome vibes, very romantic atmosphere. Staff are sweet, gives heat packs and blankets to keep us warm. Warm cocktails are a must during winters. You can order any random cocktails and they all taste so good.

The cleanliness was impeccable. The room was thoughtfully arranged with a perfect balance of modern comfort and traditional Japanese touches. Beds were extremely comfortable and the space felt well planned, not cramped like many city hotels.
What makes this hotel special is the location. Stepping outside places you immediately in the charm of old Kyoto. Walking through Gion in the early morning before the crowds arrive was unforgettable.
Service deserves special mention. The team was polite, warm and always ready to assist with genuine hospitality.

My girls declared this the best hotel we’ve ever stayed at! Their first impression of the room was just “okay”, it was clean, comfortable, and a decent size, with separate toilet and shower areas, plus a sliding door that could close off the sleeping area. But what really won them over were all the little extras that this dormy inn offers.
We booked the room with breakfast, and it was absolutely worth it. The breakfast spread had a great variety, and although they have a queue system in place, we never had to wait.
After walking close to 20,000 steps exploring Kyoto each day, the onsen became the highlight of our evenings. The girls would head straight for the complimentary ice cream afterwards, followed by the massage chairs (when they weren’t occupied, they’re very popular!). We would then end the night with the free late-night ramen. 😆
That became our nightly routine for all four nights, and it made our stay in Kyoto even more memorable before we moved on to Osaka. We’d definitely stay here again.

The first day I arrived I had a stomach issue and the hotel was really kind and helped send fresh ginger tea up to my room and requested. They went out out of their way to find me fresh ginger.
The second day I strained my back from lifting heavy luggage. They are once again very kind and send a staff to help me pack all my belongings and help me coordinate sending my luggage to Tokyo so I don’t need to lift it on the train. Don't expect nice views from the room as it will be facing other buildings. First of all, the transportation is very convenient, just one minute walk from Gojo Station, the public areas are beautifully landscaped, our room just happened to see Kyoto Tower and Higashi Honganji Temple downstairs (worth a visit, very large and exquisite), Nishi Honganji Temple is a world heritage site but has not been redecorated, not as beautiful as Higashi Honganji Temple.
The only thing is that the water temperature is not particularly stable, but it is not too cold. I guess it is due to the age of the hotel. The air conditioner is a bit noisy at night. I stayed for 4 nights from January 4 to January 8, 2026.
From the hotel, you can walk to Nijo Castle in about 10 minutes. There are many small convenience stores nearby (7-Eleven and the like), as well as two large supermarkets — Life is open until midnight, which is a huge plus. You can buy nice gifts for friends and family late in the evening without wasting daytime hours.
The transportation access is great too: within a few minutes' walk there's a subway station and a JR line (convenient for coming from the railway station), and right next to the hotel there's a bus stop. This is important because Kyoto's sights are scattered all over the city, and you often need to use public transport or taxis.
Speaking of taxis. Twice I asked the reception to call me a taxi, and both times the staff helped me — a huge thank you to them! It was especially important on the first day: thanks to a taxi, I made it to Kiyomizu-dera Temple in time and explored it without rushing.
Check-in was very quick, and the staff explained where everything was.
The room was quite spacious — or maybe it just felt that way. I comfortably unpacked my suitcase and took out everything I needed without feeling cramped. The room had all the essentials, and there were kettles near the elevator that you could take to your room if needed. I did, and had some tea before bed (on the first floor, you can grab a free tea bag if you don't have your own).
The air conditioner worked for both cooling and heating — which was very useful on some evenings. Honestly, I only used the hotel to sleep, and it was perfectly fine.
Every morning, breakfast is served on the first floor. To be honest, I expected something simple since the room rate was quite affordable. That's why the breakfast was such a pleasant surprise! My eyes wandered every morning at the variety of delicious food! A huge selection. Every day I had rice with various toppings, amazing salmon, cod, and various vegetables (the okra here was especially good).
There's a small smoking room on the first floor with good ventilation.

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay here. The decor really added to the atmosphere of the place and there was a lovely communal area for relaxing. This offered different seating areas with access to free tea and coffee, a microwave and mini oven. The hotel is directly above a 7/eleven so it was very convenient for bringing in food to eat. There was a laundry room but it was very busy and the washing machine didn't sound very happy and the drying seemed to take people a long time. We were glad to have done washing before arriving here. Overall, it's a nice little hotel and a good choice for a one-night stay in Kyoto. The room was comfortable, and the atmosphere was cozy.
The only downside is the location. It's a bit far from the nearest subway station and not really within easy walking distance of Kyoto's main attractions. That said, I'm a big fan of walking, so doing 25,000 steps a day around Kyoto was actually part of the fun for me.
The breakfast was okay, but in hindsight, I probably would have skipped it and tried one of the many local cafés or restaurants instead.

This hotel is really easy to find, right across from Daiwa Securities, which makes getting around super convenient. The drinks (alcohol and coffee) and the bath were all excellent, making for a great experience. I'd definitely choose this place again if I come back to Kyoto! Location was very good. It’s within walking distance to the shopping districts. Bus stop right outside. 1 min walk to the canal which is very lovely. Staff were polite and helpful.
