Kyoto has many temples, shrines, and traditional neighborhoods, but they are spread across different parts of the city. The Kyoto subway makes some journeys faster, especially when roads and buses are crowded. With only two subway lines, the system is much easier to understand than the train networks in Tokyo or Osaka.

Overview of Kyoto Subway Lines

The Kyoto City Subway has two lines. The Karasuma Line travels north and south, while the Tozai Line travels east and west. They meet at Karasuma Oike Station, the main transfer point in the network.

The station codes are easy to follow. Karasuma Line stations use the letter K, while Tozai Line stations use the letter T. For example, Kyoto Station is K11 and Nijojo-mae Station is T14.

Kyoto Subway Karasuma Line

The Karasuma Line is marked green and uses the letter K. It runs through central Kyoto from Kokusaikaikan in the north to Takeda in the south. This is the only subway line serving Kyoto Station, so many visitors will use it during their trip.

Kyoto Subway Operating Hours

Kyoto City Subway trains generally operate from around 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM. First and last train times depend on the station, direction, day, and whether the service continues onto another railway.

Trains run more frequently during the daytime and rush hours
Early morning and late-night services are less frequent

Kyoto subway fares are based on distance. Adult single fares range from ¥220 to ¥360, while child fares range from ¥110 to ¥180.

An IC card is the easiest option for most visitors. Kyoto City Subway accepts ICOCA, Suica, PASMO, PiTaPa, and other compatible Japanese transport cards.

How to Use the Kyoto Subway

Step 1: Check Your Line and Station Code

Find your starting station and destination on the Kyoto Subway Map. Look for the K code on the Karasuma Line or the T code on the Tozai Line.

Step 2: Buy a Ticket or Prepare Your IC Card

Buy a single ticket, use a valid day pass, or make sure your IC card has enough balance.

Step 3: Enter Through the Correct Gate

Insert your ticket or tap your IC card at the gate. Keep the ticket because you will need it when leaving.

Step 4: Check the Train Direction

Look at the final station shown on the platform sign. On the Karasuma Line, trains travel toward Kokusaikaikan or Takeda. On the Tozai Line, the main directions are Rokujizo and Uzumasa Tenjingawa.

Step 5: Transfer at Karasuma Oike

Follow the signs for the other subway line. You do not need to exit the paid area when transferring between the Karasuma and Tozai lines.

Step 6: Check Your Exit Number

Look at the station map before going upstairs. Choosing the correct exit can save you from a long walk.

It was extremely hot during our stay in Kyoto. Fortunately, the hotel is located right next to Kyoto Station, which made getting around much easier and helped us save energy in the intense heat. We chose to pay extra for larger rooms, and they were spacious and comfortable. Since we had a late evening flight, we paid around JP¥14,800 to extend one room until 6:00 pm for a late check-out. While it was convenient, we felt JP¥14,800 was quite expensive for just a few extra hours. One thing we found surprising was that hotel guests still had to pay extra JP ¥1,000 per person to use the swimming pool. We thought this was rather unusual for a hotel of this standard.

I love how clean the hotel is. The interior room design and the advanced toilets were all brilliant. My family and I got the triple room (with 3 beds) and it did not feel cramped at all. The air conditioning and lighting as well as alarms could all be controlled through their iPad. They have daily room cleaning and metal bottles, tea bags, mugs, kettles and a blow dryer. The hotel is also in the downtown location, very convenient to get to popular places. Lastly I love how eco friendly the hotel seems. I am a person who loves to prioritize green. This hotel seems to as well. If I ever come back to Kyoto, I will choose this again.

The hotel's location is also superb; it's quiet at night, and various attractions are within walking distance, just across the street from the luxurious Capella. The public bath was a delightful surprise, much cleaner and more professional than many hot spring resorts in China. A soak before bed truly helped me recover and recharge. Regarding some reviews mentioning preferential treatment towards white guests and ***, I didn't experience any of that, except for one odd instance during breakfast where my half-eaten meal was cleared away prematurely. The breakfast selection was incredibly diverse and plentiful. Overall, a fantastic and worthwhile stay!

We had a wonderful stay at Dhawa Yura Kyoto and wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. The location is excellent, right next to Sanjo Station and within easy walking distance of Gion, Yasaka Shrine, Nishiki Market and many of Kyoto's main attractions. It made getting around the city incredibly easy. The hotel itself is modern, stylish and immaculately clean. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, quiet and a welcome place to relax after long days exploring Kyoto in the summer heat. One of the highlights was the breakfast. There was an excellent selection of both Japanese and Western dishes, with fresh fruit, eggs, rice, grilled fish, noodles, miso soup, vegetables, pastries, juices and good coffee and English breakfast tea. Everything was fresh and well presented, and it gave us a great start before our early morning adventures. The staff were consistently warm, welcoming and professional throughout our stay. We particularly appreciated being able to hire bicycles from the hotel, which allowed us to cycle to Kiyomizu-dera at sunrise before the crowds arrived. It became one of the highlights of our entire Japan trip. Overall, Dhawa Yura offered the perfect combination of comfort, service and location. If you're looking for a boutique hotel in Kyoto that's close to everything while still feeling peaceful and relaxing, this is an excellent choice. Highly recommended.

There was such a wide variety, including sushi 🍣, various alcoholic beverages, cheese, salads, and grilled meats. The restaurant faces the station, so I highly recommend opting for breakfast – it's excellent value, and the sushi was delicious. The service was great too, and the lobby offers complimentary water and even Sekkisei cosmetics, which was an amazing bonus!

We stayed at Hotel Gracery Kyoto for two nights and overall had a very comfortable stay. The hotel has two sections, and we stayed in the South building. The room was very clean, and the space was used efficiently, which is typical for Japan. The bathroom layout was a bit unusual. The toilet and shower are separate, which is convenient, but the toilet cubicle itself is extremely small. The shower is positioned in an odd space between the bath and what seems to be the shower floor, and the shower head cannot be adjusted up or down. That said, the water pressure and temperature were excellent, which made up for the layout. Bottled water was provided on the first day, which was appreciated. The TV, however, was very limited with only Japanese channels and no access to Netflix or other streaming services. The location is excellent. The hotel is right by Nishiki Market and surrounded by shops and restaurants, with multiple subway lines nearby. There are also many fantastic local restaurants in the area, which we highly recommend, especially when the market gets overwhelmingly busy. The hotel provides a wide range of amenities in the lobby, including face wash, toner, lotion, razors, combs and mouthwash. While convenient, the large amount of individually packaged items does not feel particularly environmentally friendly. We checked out the breakfast one morning but decided not to purchase it as it was 2750 yen per person, and there are plenty of better and more affordable options nearby. The staff were very friendly and welcoming, and we also appreciated that the hotel offers free umbrella use on rainy days, which was a thoughtful touch. One downside was the room cleaning timing. We left early in the morning and only returned after 3pm, but the room was still being cleaned when we got back. We were asked to wait around 30 minutes, which was quite inconvenient after a long day when we wanted to rest, shower and freshen up before heading out again. Overall, a clean and well-located hotel with a few minor design quirks and service timing issues, but still a very pleasant stay.

Excellent location in Central Kyoto, right in the heart of shopping district, plenty of food options, and a short walk to Gion on the East. Very near to Hankyu train station that goes to Osaka Umeda. Staff were so friendly, always smiling and ready to assist. Rooms on the smaller side, not sure if it's the layout that made it feel more cramped, but Japan hotel rooms are generally like that. Best thing about this hotel is the open air natural hot spring! Amazing view of the mountains and you can even see Kiyomizu Dera temple in the distance. The water temperature was also not burning hot like some other public baths. There are complimentary drinks (including alcohol) on the rooftop terrace everyday from 4.30 to 6pm. Also free drinks from coffee machine all day in the lounge. I did not take hotel breakfast as I saw it is only simple bento box instead of buffet, so you can get better food outside.

Hotel is pretty big as I feel the distance walking from elevator to room, decent size rooms with windows that can be opened for maybe 3 inches(?) Enough pillows and quiet room for good rest and also nice public areas with lotsa greens. Rooms need to be more throughly cleaned though as I found coffee/tea stains on the table top(not acceptable for hotels of this grade) The in room water dispenser is a great idea though. There's a bakery within the hotel itself thats open from breakfast if you are into convenience, delish but there are simply too many good bakeries(or other breakfast places) in Kyoto.

The soundproofing is excellent, making it perfect for light sleepers who need quiet. While the rooms are small, like many in Japan, the layout is well-designed; you can easily open two large suitcases. There's a 7-Eleven and a 24-hour Fresco supermarket just steps from the hotel, which is a huge plus. The front desk service was fantastic and super friendly, and communication in English was incredibly smooth. I needed to change a restaurant reservation, but the restaurant only spoke Japanese, making it difficult to communicate. The front desk staff were very patient and efficiently helped me sort it out—much appreciated!. The lobby offers complimentary coffee and tea, along with a co-working area. Overall, it's great value for money and a very comfortable stay. Highly recommended!

This is my third time staying at this hotel, and I really love it! Location: It's near the business district, so shopping is convenient, and it's also close to the Kamo River, but not too noisy. A taxi from Kyoto Station to the hotel costs about 2000 JPY. Service: Absolutely excellent! Every time, I ask the hotel to book bicycles, which is super convenient for cycling around Kyoto. This time, three of us were traveling with a lot of luggage. When we checked out, the front desk attendant even helped us book a taxi and waved goodbye as we left. The service is incredibly thoughtful. Facilities: This time, we stayed in a triple room. The room design is excellent; the toilet and bathroom are separate, allowing three people to use them without disturbing each other for toilet breaks, washing faces, or showering, avoiding any waiting. (The pictures are of a coffee shop and a tonkatsu restaurant near the hotel – both are delicious!) I will definitely choose to stay here again on my next trip to Kyoto!

Familiar with the Roynet room layout, the room size was decent, and I could open my 28-inch suitcase without it getting in the way. Since it wasn't peak season, the price was very good. It's very close to Kyoto Station and AEON Mall. From Kansai Airport, you just take the bus and walk two blocks. There are many eateries across the street from Kyoto Station, and if you keep walking, you'll reach Higashi Honganji Temple. The hotel lobby had good air conditioning, and the staff were polite and friendly. The linens and towels seemed old due to the hotel being open for a while; the sheets even had worn-out holes, which could definitely be improved.

I didn't expect to find such a great value hotel during my summer trip. The last time I was in Kyoto was in 2023, and for some reason, hotel prices across the city were generally skyrocketing then. This year, the value for money was truly exceptional, and I was very satisfied with everything, especially meeting Mr. Yang, a Chinese staff member, right after checking in! He was incredibly kind and meticulously explained the hotel's facilities to my friend and me. He even had our luggage placed in our room before we returned. Throughout our stay, he was always responsive to our requests, making for a very smooth interaction and leaving us with an excellent impression. With such a great location and service, there's absolutely nothing to complain about. The washing machine in the room was also a high-end model that I'd be hesitant to buy for my own home; it was almost silent in operation. The only downside was that it took a bit long, sometimes up to five hours for a full cycle, though perhaps I wasn't using it correctly. Nevertheless, the clothes came out very soft and clean. My only regret is that there's a Beams store right across from the nearest subway station to the hotel, and I only discovered it as I was about to leave! It's a shame I didn't get to browse there. I'll definitely choose this hotel again on my next trip to Kyoto, and I'll make sure to visit that Beams store. I hope to see Mr. Yang again if I get the chance. Many thanks!

Extremely satisfied with this hotel. Traveling with elderly parents and children, we landed in Osaka and headed straight to Kyoto, so we chose a hotel within walking distance from the station, making it easy to manage our luggage. It's only a three-minute walk from the train station (you can see it right after exiting and turning right). The room, while not huge, was incredibly cozy and didn't feel cheap like some budget hotels. The staff were very friendly; my partner loves tea and would ask for extra water daily, which they always provided for free. During our stay, we rarely saw other Chinese guests; it was mostly Western and local guests, and breakfast was always quiet. There are tons of restaurants near the hotel (a sushi place within a five-minute walk was super delicious and great value for money). Plus, there's Isetan department store right next to the station for shopping – it couldn't be more convenient! A taxi from the hotel to Kiyomizu-dera Temple cost about 1800 JPY, and to Takashimaya, it was roughly the same price. At 9 PM, you can enter the station and take the escalator to the top for a free panoramic view of Kyoto's nightscape. I booked this hotel near Kyoto Station, about a 15-minute train ride from the venue, to watch the fireworks show at Lake Biwa! Needless to say, it's in a superb location, right across from the central ticket gate, past the bus terminal. It was a huge relief not to have to drag my suitcase around in the hot Kyoto summer! After the fireworks, I got a bit lost in the crowded Kyoto Station trying to find the hotel. I asked a volunteer who was helping with crowd control, and they immediately pointed me in the right direction, telling me it was near Kyoto Tower! The room was a bit small, but it had enough depth that I could still open my suitcase without a problem. Plus, there are lockers to store your luggage even after check-out, so you can leave your bags there, enjoy your sightseeing comfortably, and pick them up before heading home. The convenient location and not having to carry my luggage around too much made for a very comfortable stay. I'd definitely like to stay here again next time I visit Kyoto!

Kyoto is home to many luxury hotels like Aman, Capella, and Park Hyatt, which can be quite pricey and are better suited for a staycation to truly immerse oneself in Kyoto's culture. For this one-night stay, I chose the Westin. It's a large, established five-star hotel. Although it's older, all the details are still very well-maintained. The hotel is within walking distance of Nanzen-ji Temple, and a short taxi ride to Kawaramachi Shijo and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. There's also a shuttle bus to Kyoto Station every hour at 10 and 40 minutes past, which is very convenient. I booked two rooms and they were assigned next to each other. They even gave us the rooms at 12 PM, and the rooms had balconies. The breakfast was plentiful and excellent, with many freshly prepared dishes. For a hotel of this caliber in Kyoto, the price is truly remarkable.

There are two key things to be aware of when booking this hotel: First, regarding occupancy: If you are traveling as a couple, you absolutely *must* book for two people. Even if you reserve a twin room, failure to book for two will result in an additional per-person fee and taxes being charged upon arrival. Second, concerning housekeeping: Our room was not cleaned once during our three-day stay. The room was probably the smallest we’ve ever stayed in (think sleeping on a boat or in an RV), but it was spotless and well designed. Every afternoon from 3:30 to 5:30 the hotel offers a complimentary sake bar in the lobby. They also offer an impressive selection of amenities: toothbrushes, razors, face masks, serums, bath salts, and more. Breakfast is excellent, with plenty of variety. The onsen is O.K. and alternates between men’s and women’s use. We used the laundry and it is conveniently located and inexpensive. It rained while we were there and they offered us umbrellas. The staff are friendly and helpful, without exception. The location is fantastic—just steps from Teramachi and Nishiki Markets, an easy walk to multiple train stations, and close to both the Gion and Pontocho districts. There are countless restaurants in every direction. On one of the afternoons during our four‑night stay, the hotel even hosted a free maiko (apprentice geisha) performance in the lobby, which was beautifully done.

The room we stayed in had more of a western fee to it (a chaise lounge and a single seat instead of the traditional Japanese table). Regardless, the room was very pretty with traditional Japanese wall paper, blinds and bathroom. The blinds were a tiny bit spotted with stains especially near the furniture which we overlooked, but the amenities were plentiful and offered in the room. The beds were extremely comfortable and chargers for phones were made readily available. Very nice to melt away in bed after a long day without needing to unpack chargers. The shared baths were also beautiful, large frosted glass surrounded the bath with an outdoor section that offered more of a nature environment. Since this is exclusive to guests there were times where I was there all by myself for a few minutes which brought deep appreciation. I did not indulge in the hotels food offerings, and nearby places closed around 11pm so nothing to eat until the morning when we stayed. We found delicious bites and a fair at a nearby temple/park in the morning and indulged in fresh sushi quick bites before heading to our next destination.

A trip to Arashiyama with my elderly mother during the spring cherry blossom season. It had been a while since I had stayed at a traditional inn. We stayed here for one night. It had a hot spring, a good location, and included dinner and breakfast. The food was delicious. - Bamboo shoot rice and firefly squid tempura for dinner... The portions were large, but it was a pain to finish it all at the end, which was disappointing, even though it was delicious. - The breakfast was perfect in both quantity and quality. The facilities: - The guest rooms are old, but well kept. - The open-air bath on the top floor was pleasant. I think the open-air bath needs to be cleaned and maintained a little better. The inn's staff are close to each other, so you can get a glimpse of how well they work. I hope that the inn will continue to be an easy place to work for both the staff who have been contributing for many years and the new staff. It was an inn that I would like to stay at again. (Next time, I might skip lunch just to have dinner.) Thank you very much for this opportunity.

I'd recommend taking a taxi to and from the hotel, otherwise it's hard to manage luggage on the crowded public buses. The environment is beautiful and peaceful, a quiet oasis in the bustling city. They do offer Chinese-speaking staff, but it's hit or miss; I didn't encounter any during my check-in, though there was a lovely lady in the restaurant who spoke fluent Chinese. Breakfast is relatively extensive, but it's not a pure buffet. There's a menu, though it's not complicated. They usually ask what you'd like to drink first, then take your order. The hotel is located in Kiyomizu Gojo. Coming from Osaka, take the Keihan Line to Kiyomizu Gojo Station, exit 4, and the hotel is right across the street. However, the Special Express doesn't stop here; you'll need to transfer to a Semi-Express or local train at Sanjo. I originally booked this hotel hoping to be near the Kamo River for a morning stroll. While this section of the Kamo River in Gojo is less crowded, the scenery around Shijo Kawaramachi is much more beautiful for photos. The biggest convenience of this hotel is its proximity to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Yasaka Shrine, and that area. It's only a 15-minute walk to Kiyomizu-dera and about 20 minutes to Hanamikoji. Getting to Takashimaya via the subway is also very easy, just a few stops. The hotel facilities are comprehensive, and the room easily accommodates two large suitcases without feeling cramped. The breakfast is worth the price, and all the staff are warm and friendly. They were always helpful when I asked them to call a taxi or borrow an umbrella, which made for a great experience. If you're tired from sightseeing, you can enjoy the onsen; the pool isn't large, but it's not overly crowded. Overall, it was a good experience, and I would consider booking this hotel again next time.

I know my lack of English is my fault, but I booked it specifically because it was listed as a ”Chinese Choice” hotel! Without that label, I wouldn't know what to say. Besides, Uber kept having problems locating me at the correct hotel location, so I had to walk 100 meters to the other side of the street to hail a taxi. However, the location is quite close to Sannenzaka and Kiyomizu-dera Temple, and I took taxis throughout the city. The room wasn't very big, but it didn't bother me since I was alone. The price of 13,000 yen for three nights was moderate, but I later went to the InterContinental Osaka for 8,700 yen for three nights, which seemed like a much better deal, and the city view was better.

Breakfast is amazing - mix of european and Japanese food but mostly European. It is a very good feature when you are little bit tired of Japanese food. 5. Water, tea, coffee at the reception 6. Polite and helpful staff. 7. Price is reasonable for the quality and location. The building itself is new. Negatives: Can't really say any bad things, everything is good. Maybe cleaning only once in 3 days is a bit off... and also we didn't know how to get free water bottles every day - they usually refreshed with cleaning. But we didn't ask about it at the reception so it's our fault.
