Kyoto is suitable for year round travel, especially in spring where the weather is especially mild. The climate from March to April is warm is warm and conducive for going outdoors, and is the best time to enjoy the Sakura season. May to August comes the summer where the air is comparatively hotter. June and July is the wet spell and the weather becomes hot and humid. Autumn from mid-November to December is when forest and leaves turns red and it is rather breathtaking. Winter here is wet and cold and when it snows, Kyoto is especially beautiful.

What Is the Weather Like in Kyoto?

Kyoto has four clear seasons. The city sits in a basin surrounded by mountains on three sides, so summers can feel hotter and more humid than the temperature suggests. Winters are cold, especially in the morning and at night.

Based on the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991 to 2020 climate averages, Kyoto has an annual mean temperature of 16.2°C. August is normally the hottest month, with an average daytime high of 33.7°C. January is the coldest, with an average low of 1.5°C.

Kyoto receives rain throughout the year, but the wettest period is usually from June to July. Summer can also bring sudden afternoon rain and thunderstorms. Snow may fall from December to February, although it rarely stays on the ground for long in central Kyoto.

Kyoto Weather by Season

Spring in Kyoto: March to May

Spring in Kyoto

Spring starts cool in March, then becomes warmer and more comfortable through April and May. Average temperatures range from 4.3°C to 14.1°C in March, 9.2°C to 20.1°C in April, and 14.5°C to 25.1°C in May.

Cherry blossoms usually become the main attraction from late March to early April, but exact bloom dates change every year. April is beautiful, but it is also one of Kyoto's busiest travel periods. By May, the weather feels warmer and the city turns green.

What to wear

  • March: A warm jacket, sweater, long pants, and closed shoes
  • April: A light jacket, long-sleeved top, and comfortable walking shoes
  • May: Light clothes for daytime and a thin jacket for the evening
  • Small umbrella for changing weather

Best seasonal activities

  • See cherry blossoms along the Philosopher's Path
  • Visit Maruyama Park and Kiyomizu-dera
  • Walk through Arashiyama before the midday crowds
  • Explore temple gardens and hiking routes
  • Attend Aoi Matsuri on May 15
🌸 Travel Tip: Kyoto mornings can still feel cold in March and early April. I recommend wearing layers that you can remove when the afternoon gets warmer.

Kyoto Rainy Season: Early June to Mid-July

Kyoto Rainy Season

Kyoto's rainy season is called tsuyu. It usually begins in early June and continues until around mid-July. June receives about 199.7 mm of rain on average, while July receives about 223.6 mm.

It does not normally rain all day, every day. Some days have light showers, while others bring heavy rain or thunderstorms. Humidity is high, so wet clothes and shoes may take longer to dry.

What to wear

  • Light and quick-drying clothes
  • Waterproof or water-resistant walking shoes
  • Thin rain jacket
  • Small umbrella
  • Extra socks

Best seasonal activities

  • See hydrangeas around temples and gardens
  • Visit Kyoto Aquarium
  • Explore the Kyoto International Manga Museum
  • Spend time in Nishiki Market
  • Visit covered shopping streets and indoor cultural sites
Travel Tip: Keep one indoor attraction in your daily plan. If heavy rain starts, you can change your schedule without wasting the whole day.

Summer in Kyoto: June to August

Summer in Kyoto

Summer in Kyoto is hot, humid, and sometimes difficult for long outdoor walks. Average temperatures rise from 19.2°C to 28.1°C in June, 23.6°C to 32.0°C in July, and 24.7°C to 33.7°C in August. Days above 35°C are possible, especially in July and August.

Kyoto's basin location blocks some cooling winds, so the heat may remain even after sunset. Sudden afternoon rain and thunderstorms can also happen.

What to wear

  • Thin, breathable shirts
  • Shorts, skirts, or light pants
  • Hat or UV umbrella
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Light cover-up for air-conditioned trains, buses, and shops

Best seasonal activities

  • Experience Gion Matsuri throughout July
  • Watch the Gozan Okuribi bonfires on August 16
  • Enjoy riverside dining along the Kamo River
  • Visit Fushimi Inari early in the morning
  • Explore museums, markets, and indoor attractions in the afternoon
☀️ Travel Tip: I recommend starting outdoor sightseeing before 9:00 AM. Take a hotel or cafe break during the hottest hours, then continue your trip in the late afternoon.

Autumn in Kyoto: September to November

Autumn in Kyoto

September can still feel like summer, with average temperatures from 20.7°C to 29.2°C. October is more comfortable at around 14.4°C to 23.4°C. November becomes cooler, with averages from 8.4°C to 17.3°C.

Kyoto's autumn leaves usually become more colorful in November, although the exact timing depends on the year's weather. This is another busy travel season, especially around famous temples and Arashiyama.

Early autumn may still be affected by typhoons. Heavy rain and strong winds can cause changes to flights, trains, and attraction schedules.

What to wear

  • September: Light clothes, sunscreen, and a small umbrella
  • October: Long sleeves and a light jacket
  • November: A sweater, warm jacket, long pants, and scarf for cold evenings

Best seasonal activities

  • See autumn leaves at Tofuku-ji and Eikando
  • Walk around Arashiyama and the Higashiyama area
  • Visit Kiyomizu-dera in the early morning
  • Attend Jidai Matsuri on October 22
  • Enjoy seasonal food and temple night illuminations
🍁 Travel Tip: Daytime may feel comfortable, but the temperature can drop quickly after sunset. Bring a jacket even when the morning forecast looks mild.

Winter in Kyoto: December to February

Winter in Kyoto

Winter is cold and mostly dry. Average temperatures range from 3.5°C to 11.6°C in December, 1.5°C to 9.1°C in January, and 1.6°C to 10.0°C in February.

Kyoto sometimes gets snow, especially in January and February, but deep snow is uncommon in the city center. Mountain areas and northern parts of Kyoto can be colder. Clear winter days are good for temple visits, but shaded paths may feel much colder.

What to wear

  • Wool or down coat
  • Thermal innerwear
  • Sweater
  • Gloves, scarf, and knit hat
  • Warm socks
  • Closed shoes with good grip

Best seasonal activities

  • Visit quiet temples with smaller crowds
  • Take winter photos at Kinkaku-ji after light snowfall
  • Enjoy hot matcha, noodles, and seasonal dishes
  • Join New Year temple and shrine visits
  • See plum blossoms beginning in February
❄️ Travel Tip: Trains, buses, shops, and hotels are heated. Wear several removable layers so you stay warm outside without feeling too hot indoors.
🏨 Pro Tip: Don’t forget to look for Kyoto hotels near major attractions to make your sightseeing more convenient!

Best Time to Visit Kyoto

For comfortable sightseeing, I recommend spring and autumn. April is popular for cherry blossoms, while November is known for autumn colors. These months are beautiful but busy, so book transport and accommodation early.

May and October are also good choices. The weather is usually comfortable for walking, and you can enjoy outdoor attractions without the most intense summer heat or winter cold.

Best Time for Budget Travelers

Consider mid-January to February, excluding the New Year period, or the rainy season in June. These periods may have lower demand than peak cherry blossom and autumn foliage dates.

Why visit

  • Better chance of finding hotel deals
  • Fewer crowds at popular temples
  • Easier restaurant reservations
  • More relaxed sightseeing
Money-saving tip: Compare hotel prices across different Kyoto areas. Staying near a train or subway station outside Gion may cost less while still giving you convenient access to attractions.

Best Time for Luxury Travelers

Late March to early April and mid to late November are ideal for seasonal scenery, premium ryokan stays, private tours, and special dining experiences.

Best experiences

  • Traditional ryokan stay
  • Seasonal kaiseki dinner
  • Private temple or garden tour
  • Kimono experience
  • Cherry blossom or autumn foliage viewing
Booking tip: Reserve popular ryokan rooms and special dining experiences several months ahead because availability becomes limited during peak seasons.

Best Time for Adventure Seekers

April to May and October to November offer better temperatures for hiking, cycling, and long walks. The weather is usually more comfortable than summer, and the trails are less likely to feel icy than in winter.

Good outdoor plans

  • Hike from Kurama to Kibune
  • Walk through Arashiyama
  • Cycle along the Kamo River
  • Explore Fushimi Inari beyond the lower gates
  • Visit mountain temples
Safety tip: Avoid mountain trails during heavy rain, thunderstorms, typhoon warnings, or icy winter conditions.

Best Time for Cultural Travelers

Kyoto has major cultural events across the year:

  • May 15: Aoi Matsuri
  • July 1 to 31: Gion Matsuri
  • August 16: Gozan Okuribi
  • October 22: Jidai Matsuri

Festival dates can be crowded. Arrive early, check road closures, and confirm the latest event schedule before leaving your hotel.

Best Time for Family Travelers

May and October are comfortable for families because the weather is mild enough for parks, temples, and walking tours. Late October and early November can also be easier than the busiest autumn foliage dates.

Family travel tips

  • Start early and schedule afternoon breaks
  • Mix outdoor attractions with museums or aquariums
  • Stay near Kyoto Station or another major transport stop
  • Bring snacks, water, and a small umbrella
  • Use a stroller only where paths and stairs are manageable
Reminder: If you are planning a trip to Kyoto, book your flight to Osaka because Kyoto does not have a major international airport. Most Filipino travelers arrive at Kansai International Airport, then continue to Kyoto by train or bus.

It is a very nice hotel with attentive staff! The hotel is about a 7 minutes walk from Kyoto station. It’s a very convenient place to stay if you’re catching an early train or arriving from a late one. I don’t know if I’d recommend it for a longer stay since the area is quite boring. There’s plenty of restaurants and shops within the station but they’re very crowded and more expensive. It’s also quite far away from the main sights of Kyoto, so for a longer stay I’d recommend staying downtown. The included room amenities are good but nothing special. There’s shaving kits, towels, haircare, skincare, tea, water, and yukata robes (the robes are not souvenirs). There’s a pool, a spa area, and a restaurant, which all have an additional fee. My room was clean, but I found some scuff marks on the walls and a crack in my bathtub. From Kyoto station you can see Kyoto tower but it’s not an amazing sight hahaha. It takes about 25 minutes to downtown Kyoto from the hote

This hotel boasts a prime location right in the heart of Kyoto's JR transportation hub. It's incredibly easy to find – just turn right out of Kyoto Station, walk about 100 meters, and take the elevator up to the second floor. You can also access the hotel directly from inside the station. The surrounding area is bustling with plenty of shopping and dining options, and both subway and bus stations are very close by, making getting around a breeze. The hotel itself is well-equipped with all the necessary facilities, and the rooms are spacious, some even offering scenic views. Highly recommended!

The hotel also boasts a cafe, a supermarket, and a gym... perfect for young travelers! The rooms are spacious, the bedding is comfortable, and the bathroom is also very roomy.

This was our first time staying in the Gion area, and Hotel the Celestine truly elevated the experience. The atmosphere is calm, elegant and very Kyoto. From check in to departure, everything felt smooth and professionally handled. The cleanliness was impeccable. The room was thoughtfully arranged with a perfect balance of modern comfort and traditional Japanese touches. Beds were extremely comfortable and the space felt well planned, not cramped like many city hotels. What makes this hotel special is the location. Stepping outside places you immediately in the charm of old Kyoto. Walking through Gion in the early morning before the crowds arrive was unforgettable. Service deserves special mention. The team was polite, warm and always ready to assist with genuine hospitality. A beautiful property for anyone who appreciates quiet luxury in a prime cultural setting. We would gladly stay again.

From the moment you walk in, you know you're in for a wonderful stay. When I first arrived, I noticed a sign that said, ”Quality over Quantity.” At first, I thought it was a bit unusual, but by the end of my stay, I completely understood what it meant. This isn't a typical chain hotel—it's family-owned, and that personal touch is evident in every detail. From the pleasant scent throughout the property to the modern, high-tech features, everything was thoughtfully designed. The rooms were spectacular, and every aspect reflected quality. The bathroom was spotless, the towels were plush, the sheets were incredibly clean and smelled fresh, and all of the amenities were top-notch. What truly set this hotel apart was the hospitality. Every morning and afternoon, the staff greeted guests with a warm smile as they came and went, making the experience feel welcoming and personal. I highly recommend this hotel. The owners and staff clearly take pride in creating an exceptional experience, and it shows in every detail. It was an amazing stay from beginning to end, and I would gladly return.

Great location with various transportation options nearby, making it very convenient for getting around. It's just a few minutes' walk to the shopping street in Sanjo. The room was clean and the bedding comfortable. Breakfast had limited choices, but both the service and taste were satisfactory. The bathroom only provided toothbrushes and shower amenities, unlike other traditional Japanese business hotels that offer a full range of personal items. The lobby has a lounge area with complimentary 24-hour coffee, tea, and snacks. The staff were friendly and spoke fluent English. A separate accommodation tax needs to be paid upon check-out.

This is a venerable super five-star hotel with an excellent location, though it's a bit out of the city center, making it quite inconvenient for getting to sights, attractions, and dining. However, the hotel shuttle bus to Kyoto Station is a lifesaver. The hotel was renovated a few years ago, but it still retains its 40+ years of history and luxurious decor, now blended with modern, clean design elements. The rooms feature a modern design with wooden furniture, and the hotel environment is very pleasant. The lobby's public areas offer lounge sofas and coffee tables, as well as shared co-working desks, catering to various guest needs. It feels very vibrant, suitable for both leisure and business travelers. The soundproofing in the rooms is excellent, and the bedding is extremely comfortable. The hotel's overall architecture, with its red bricks and black grid windows, is both classic and contemporary, blending well with Kyoto's traditional wooden building style. The first floor houses a stylish small shopping center, Shinfukan, with trendy brands, which is quite interesting. I would definitely choose to stay here again. I'd love to know the brand of the mattresses and pillows, my daughter really enjoyed them!

I stayed at this hotel for the entire three-day trip to Kyoto. The location of the hotel is not bad. It takes a few minutes to walk to the Kamogawa River, and about ten minutes to walk to Takashimaya? Just take a walk. The variety of breakfast is incomparable to that in China. The bread is quite good. I also saw his bakery in Osaka Takashimaya. The room area is considered large in Japan, and the hygiene is also OK. Dyson hair dryer, free mask, whitening sensitive skin should be used with caution. The minibar gave a lot of small biscuits and fruits, and the taste is OK. There is no bottled water. It is said that the tap is direct drinking water and can only be boiled for drinking. The water flow of the tap is small, but the shower water pressure is enough.

The hotel is nested in a quiet corner, within walking distance of Sagaogurayama Tabuchiyamacho. Im however a bit disappointed with the limited facilites it offered when compared to the price we paid. We stayed in the Tsukinone Twin Room which is on the third floor of the building. The view is pleasant. The room is of decent size. Yet there were no public onsens. We need to pay YEN5000 for 45 minutes and there are only 2 private onsens. For more luxurious rooms with private onsen, the one I visited was on the ground level with no views as it were by the pathway to the reception , separated by wooden planks. We paid around Yen5000 for the breakfast in the hotel, Both western and japanese breakfasts were offered. We tried both. It is of standard. The 4 different juices presented on the top of the bento box was impressive. The vaccinity is pleasant. We could walk to the train station, the tourist rown area , the nearby parks and the world heritage sites. Nice area .

I absolutely loved the bathroom area! The shower space was great, and the bathtub was huge, big enough for two people to soak in comfortably. Breakfast was a highlight of my stay. I was so happy to see fresh melon and unlimited fish roe available at the buffet. It felt like a real treat! The room itself was a decent size, with enough space to open and store large suitcases. Excellent location in Central Kyoto, right in the heart of shopping district, plenty of food options, and a short walk to Gion on the East. Very near to Hankyu train station that goes to Osaka Umeda. Staff were so friendly, always smiling and ready to assist. Rooms on the smaller side, not sure if it's the layout that made it feel more cramped, but Japan hotel rooms are generally like that. Best thing about this hotel is the open air natural hot spring! Amazing view of the mountains and you can even see Kiyomizu Dera temple in the distance. The water temperature was also not burning hot like some other public baths. There are complimentary drinks (including alcohol) on the rooftop terrace everyday from 4.30 to 6pm. Also free drinks from coffee machine all day in the lounge. I did not take hotel breakfast as I saw it is only simple bento box instead of buffet, so you can get better food outside.

I switched to this hotel for my last night from Kawaramachi so I could easily catch the Haruka train to Kansai Airport early the next morning. It's very close to Kyoto Station and AEON Mall. From Kansai Airport, you just take the bus and walk two blocks. There are many eateries across the street from Kyoto Station, and if you keep walking, you'll reach Higashi Honganji Temple. The hotel lobby had good air conditioning, and the staff were polite and friendly. The linens and towels seemed old due to the hotel being open for a while; the sheets even had worn-out holes, which could definitely be improved.

Service did not get full marks from me. I booked a double room. Front desk offered me 2 twin beds put together to make up a double bed. They claimed room had more sunlight compared with my double bed booking. Other than that, I had no other issues. There is a free coffee area that is opened until midnight. Free sake tasting from 1pm to 9pm. Do feedback to the front desk if it runs out. Amenities are self service beside the front desk if you require more.

This hotel is decent. The location is great, and check-in and check-out are done via self-service machines. You also pay taxes at these machines. Overall, it's a pretty good hotel. When choosing, make sure to pick the newer building, not the old one, as the new building is recently renovated and generally much better. It's only about a 10-minute walk to Kyoto Station. There are laundromats nearby, as the hotel itself doesn't have a laundry room.

This was my second stay, and it truly offers the most spacious rooms I've encountered in Japan – I absolutely love it. The hotel has a grand exterior, and there's a dedicated complimentary onsen with multiple pools, some even featuring massage functions. They also provide a free drinks and snack area, and a room for enjoying music, making the overall experience very relaxing. The photos I took show the hotel room and the view from the balcony; we enjoyed moon-gazing at night and admiring the scenery in the morning. It's a quiet, open space that puts you at ease. The hotel restaurant serves excellent food, though the prices are a bit high; it would be even better if they could adjust them. The hotel is close to Kyoto Station, making it very convenient to get there by taxi.

I stayed here 10 years ago. The hotel looked exactly the same. It is a little bit on the old school side, but everything is clean and impeccable. The first day I arrived I had a stomach issue and the hotel was really kind and helped send fresh ginger tea up to my room and requested. They went out out of their way to find me fresh ginger. The second day I strained my back from lifting heavy luggage. They are once again very kind and send a staff to help me pack all my belongings and help me coordinate sending my luggage to Tokyo so I don’t need to lift it on the train. Special thanks to Naing Thiri who is so kind and help me pack everything so neatly and even help me get dressed Honestly, when I first checked in and the hotel looks a little bit outdated I was thinking maybe next day I would not want to come back but with the great service, I would definitely stay here again if I come to Kyoto

As an Amanjunkie, it's not just love at first sight; I genuinely adore the hotel's location, design, and ambiance – it truly didn't disappoint. Every corner of the hotel and every detail in the room's layout is perfect for an Amanjunkie like me, and the quality of the toiletries is outstanding. The restaurant is beautiful and offers a happy hour with complimentary drinks and snacks. While the selection isn't vast, with such a perfect atmosphere, who really cares? It's also worth mentioning that the hotel boasts a stunning indoor and outdoor hot spring, complete with a beautifully designed small lounge area – simply flawless. Compared to other Aman properties, though, I personally wouldn't recommend this one for a first-time Aman guest.

I noticed this hotel's location on my last visit to Kyoto. It's incredibly convenient for Eikando, Philosopher's Path, Ginkakuji, Honen-in, Anrakuji, Shinnyodo, Eishoin, Chion-in, and Shoren-in – absolutely the best choice for autumn leaf viewing. The hotel is small yet exquisite, offering excellent tea sets and tea. It boasts a beautiful garden shared with Okazaki Shrine's別邸 (detached residence). The hotel facilities are also good (though unfortunately, no buckwheat pillows, and the air conditioning temperature was a bit uncomfortable and hard to adjust). The lounge has a nice view, serving only alcohol, coffee, and tea. I ordered a chestnut cake. The restaurant service was polite but lacked warmth. There's a large supermarket and a bus stop nearby, but restaurants are a bit further away, so I didn't go out in the evenings.

Had a perfect stay at Tennen Osaka Onsen during our Kyoto trip. The hotel is clean, modern, and comfortable while still retaining some traditional Japanese elements in the room design, which gives it a unique and authentic atmosphere. The water pressure was excellent, and the complimentary onsen facilities were fantastic, with several different pools available to enjoy. One of the highlights was the generous complimentary offerings, including free-flow ramen and ice cream, which were a lovely bonus after a long day of sightseeing. The breakfast deserves special mention — it was absolutely outstanding. There was a huge variety of choices, all freshly prepared and delicious. The staff continuously refilled the food, ensuring everything remained fresh throughout service. The quality of the ingredients was impressive, and guests could enjoy unlimited freshly fried tempura and fresh seafood poke bowls, which felt more like a premium restaurant experience than a hotel breakfast. Overall, an exceptional stay with excellent facilities, amazing food, and great value. I would definitely stay here again when visiting Kyoto.

This branded hotel in Kyoto offers great value for money. Kyoto is home to many luxury hotels like Aman, Capella, and Park Hyatt, which can be quite pricey and are better suited for a staycation to truly immerse oneself in Kyoto's culture. For this one-night stay, I chose the Westin. It's a large, established five-star hotel. Although it's older, all the details are still very well-maintained. The hotel is within walking distance of Nanzen-ji Temple, and a short taxi ride to Kawaramachi Shijo and Kiyomizu-dera Temple. There's also a shuttle bus to Kyoto Station every hour at 10 and 40 minutes past, which is very convenient. I booked two rooms and they were assigned next to each other. They even gave us the rooms at 12 PM, and the rooms had balconies. The breakfast was plentiful and excellent, with many freshly prepared dishes. There is also a Lawson convenience store right beside the hotel. The hotel provides early baggage storage service for guests who arrive before check-in time, and luggage storage is also available on the day of check-out. The staff are helpful and friendly. The breakfast is great, and the onsen is perfect for relaxing after a long and tiring day of travelling. A few things that could improve the stay further: 1. This is a budget hotel aiming for something more—and they’ve genuinely succeeded. The room was probably the smallest we’ve ever stayed in (think sleeping on a boat or in an RV), but it was spotless and well designed. Every afternoon from 3:30 to 5:30 the hotel offers a complimentary sake bar in the lobby.  They also offer an impressive selection of amenities: toothbrushes, razors, face masks, serums, bath salts, and more. Breakfast is excellent, with plenty of variety. The onsen is O.K. and alternates between men’s and women’s use. We used the laundry and it is conveniently located and inexpensive.  It rained while we were there and they offered us umbrellas. The staff are friendly and helpful, without exception. The location is fantastic—just steps from Teramachi and Nishiki Markets, an easy walk to multiple train stations, and close to both the Gion and Pontocho districts. There are countless restaurants in every direction. On one of the afternoons during our four‑night stay, the hotel even hosted a free maiko (apprentice geisha) performance in the lobby, which was beautifully done.

Facilities: You have to walk through an alley to find the hotel entrance. Upon entering, you pass by the staff area. The lobby environment, facing a small courtyard, is quite pleasant. However, the quality of the Otowa Hall is mediocre. They claim to offer complimentary soft drinks and snacks, but in reality, there isn't much choice. The coffee machine area was cluttered with used coffee cups, making it look a bit dirty. Service: Hotel check-in time is 3 PM, but I arrived at 2:30 PM after some early shopping. The staff brought out some snacks and even knelt down to meticulously explain the hotel's layout and check-in procedures. Hygiene: I stayed in a Japanese-style room with a tatami mat. Overall, I was quite satisfied with the environment, but the bed sheets had a strong, stale odor. It felt like they weren't changed between guests... even perfume couldn't cover the smell. A trip to Arashiyama with my elderly mother during the spring cherry blossom season. It had been a while since I had stayed at a traditional inn. We stayed here for one night. It had a hot spring, a good location, and included dinner and breakfast. The food was delicious. - Bamboo shoot rice and firefly squid tempura for dinner... The portions were large, but it was a pain to finish it all at the end, which was disappointing, even though it was delicious. - The breakfast was perfect in both quantity and quality. The facilities: - The guest rooms are old, but well kept. - The open-air bath on the top floor was pleasant. I think the open-air bath needs to be cleaned and maintained a little better. The inn's staff are close to each other, so you can get a glimpse of how well they work. I hope that the inn will continue to be an easy place to work for both the staff who have been contributing for many years and the new staff. It was an inn that I would like to stay at again. The DoubleTree by Hilton was a convenient choice, located right near Kyoto Station, which made getting around super easy. The facilities were pretty standard, nothing spectacular, but the soundproofing was good – it was quiet at night. The hotel is located in Kiyomizu Gojo. Coming from Osaka, take the Keihan Line to Kiyomizu Gojo Station, exit 4, and the hotel is right across the street. However, the Special Express doesn't stop here; you'll need to transfer to a Semi-Express or local train at Sanjo. I originally booked this hotel hoping to be near the Kamo River for a morning stroll. While this section of the Kamo River in Gojo is less crowded, the scenery around Shijo Kawaramachi is much more beautiful for photos. The biggest convenience of this hotel is its proximity to Kiyomizu-dera Temple, Yasaka Shrine, and that area. It's only a 15-minute walk to Kiyomizu-dera and about 20 minutes to Hanamikoji. Getting to Takashimaya via the subway is also very easy, just a few stops. The hotel facilities are comprehensive, and the room easily accommodates two large suitcases without feeling cramped. The breakfast is worth the price, and all the staff are warm and friendly. They were always helpful when I asked them to call a taxi or borrow an umbrella, which made for a great experience. If you're tired from sightseeing, you can enjoy the onsen; the pool isn't large, but it's not overly crowded. Transportation: Full marks, the Tozai Line, Keihan Line, and Sanjo-Shijo Station are all next to each other. It is very convenient to go to Osaka (direct from Keihan) and Nara. There are no worries when it comes to finding transportation options. Shopping attractions: The hotel is located between Gion and Shijo shopping malls, and the walk can be controlled in about 10 minutes. Since it is close to the subway entrance and Kyoto's BUS system is very mature, it is very convenient to go to any other attractions from the hotel. Service: The service always shines. We want to cancel the breakfast for a few days that we have paid for. After confirming that it is operable, the hotel front desk will immediately help you arrange it on the same day. The positive feeling brought by this kind of service is very strong. Communication: There were two Westerners at the front desk we met. In addition to the Japanese reception on the first day, everyone's English communication skills were better than mine, which made up for my shortcomings in Japanese conversation skills. Room layout: A standard Japanese-style old building. The room is not big. It is very clean and comfortable. It is a bit regrettable that the window in the room is a false window. Although it faces the outside and has plenty of light, our room cannot be opened. of. Meals: We only tried the breakfast service in the hotel. Objectively speaking, breakfast is not its strong point, but they can accept cancellation services within a reasonable range. I still can't help but praise them for this. Summary: If you want to live in the ancient Gion old town, close to Shijo shopping mall, want to have very convenient subway transportation, and want to experience Japanese architecture, and finally need a certain cost-effectiveness, then this store is highly recommended. The only minor drawback is that the room itself is long and narrow, so it can feel a bit cramped if you try to open two large suitcases. We booked for three people, and the hotel had already prepared a third sofa bed, which was great. I stayed for 4 nights from January 4 to January 8, 2026. From the hotel, you can walk to Nijo Castle in about 10 minutes. There are many small convenience stores nearby (7-Eleven and the like), as well as two large supermarkets — Life is open until midnight, which is a huge plus. You can buy nice gifts for friends and family late in the evening without wasting daytime hours. The transportation access is great too: within a few minutes' walk there's a subway station and a JR line (convenient for coming from the railway station), and right next to the hotel there's a bus stop. This is important because Kyoto's sights are scattered all over the city, and you often need to use public transport or taxis. Speaking of taxis. Twice I asked the reception to call me a taxi, and both times the staff helped me — a huge thank you to them! It was especially important on the first day: thanks to a taxi, I made it to Kiyomizu-dera Temple in time and explored it without rushing. Check-in was very quick, and the staff explained where everything was. The room was quite spacious — or maybe it just felt that way. I comfortably unpacked my suitcase and took out everything I needed without feeling cramped. The room had all the essentials, and there were kettles near the elevator that you could take to your room if needed. I did, and had some tea before bed (on the first floor, you can grab a free tea bag if you don't have your own). The air conditioner worked for both cooling and heating — which was very useful on some evenings. Honestly, I only used the hotel to sleep, and it was perfectly fine. Every morning, breakfast is served on the first floor. To be honest, I expected something simple since the room rate was quite affordable. That's why the breakfast was such a pleasant surprise! My eyes wandered every morning at the variety of delicious food! A huge selection. Every day I had rice with various toppings, amazing salmon, cod, and various vegetables (the okra here was especially good). There's a small smoking room on the first floor with good ventilation. My overall impression of the hotel is extremely positive. I will definitely stay here again on my next visit to Kyoto.

I loved this place! It was right in front of the metro station, so it wasn't hard to get to at all. It had two different thermal baths, and there was no one there at night. They gave us a yukata to wear when we left the onsen or for sleeping, and it was very comfortable. There's a free coffee and hot chocolate machine that's really good. The breakfast the next day was delicious, and I left very satisfied. After we checked out, they stored our luggage for us, charging ¥300 per bag. It's a good option because the lockers at the station fill up, and storing luggage elsewhere is very expensive.

We really enjoyed our 3 night stay here. The decor really added to the atmosphere of the place and there was a lovely communal area for relaxing. This offered different seating areas with access to free tea and coffee, a microwave and mini oven. The hotel is directly above a 7/eleven so it was very convenient for bringing in food to eat. There was a laundry room but it was very busy and the washing machine didn't sound very happy and the drying seemed to take people a long time. We were glad to have done washing before arriving here. The room was quite big and the bed was on a raised platform so cases could be stored underneath. It was very dark in the room because of the decor. We did sleep well. The bathroom was very modern and clean with a wet room style shower. All areas of the hotel were very clean throughout our stay and staff were visibly working to maintain a high standard. Kyoto was extremely busy at the time of our stay (during golden week) so we focused our visits to places that could be walked to or accessed from the Kiyomizu-Gojo Station on the Keihan Line. We did one trip that involved buses and it was horrendously busy with the longest queues at bus stops we've ever seen.

I've stayed at this hotel twice now, and its location right inside Kyoto Station is incredibly convenient. You don't really hear any train noise either, which is great. The rooms and overall environment are excellent. My only minor complaint is that the front desk staff seemed a bit perfunctory.

The room is spacious. Everything is great. Only they don’t have hot water dispenser. The cleanliness is superb. Location is very convenient for us, as it is near to everywhere. Not so near to the metro station but is okay, the walk is nice with beautiful surrounding with good vibes. Love Kyoto. Walkable to the beautiful karmo river

This hotel is super convenient, right next to Kyoto Station. If you exit Kyoto Station and head right, past the Kyoto Theater, you'll be there in no time. It's a lifesaver for anyone traveling with luggage, making transfers to the Shinkansen, bus, or subway incredibly easy. The room's layout was well-thought-out, and the bedding was wonderfully soft and comfortable. The bathroom facilities were spotless. Even for a standard twin room, it didn't feel cramped at all. Overall, the hotel was really good.

The location is good, and the room is decorated in a retro style. However, the room had a strong damp smell when I first checked in. There were many buttons for the shower, which made it a bit difficult to use; the water kept turning off, and I had to press them again – maybe I just didn't know how to use them properly… Also, on my first night, I left a vacuum-sealed comforter on the wardrobe (which I hadn't touched), and it suddenly fell off during the night, giving me a fright. The breakfast was quite nice. Overall, it was pretty good.

Nijo Castle Kyoto|1.53km from city center
I had a great stay at this hotel, especially as a manga fan. The room was clean, and I received fresh towels every day. Amenities such as toiletries could be picked up from the reception area, which was very convenient. The hotel also provides complimentary drinks 24/7, including water, coffee, and tea. There is a bus stop directly in front of the hotel with buses that go straight to Kyoto Station, and the nearest subway station is about a 10-minute walk away. The famous Nishiki Market is around a 20-25 minute walk from the hotel, and there are plenty of restaurants nearby. There is also a convenience store right next to the hotel and a supermarket within a short walking distance, making it very easy to grab snacks, drinks, or anything else you might need. Popular attractions such as Nijō Castle and Kyoto Imperial Palace are also within walking distance. Overall, I had a very pleasant stay and would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Kyoto.

Beyond my expectations, this is a fantastic hotel, small yet exquisite. They offer a complimentary drink every day, which is perfect for enjoying a quiet evening away from the hustle and bustle. The public bath is incredibly clean; I had it all to myself for two out of my three-day stay, which was wonderfully relaxing. I'll definitely be back!

The room was definitely small but it was cheap, offering good value for money. It's located in the Kawaramachi area, right by the Kamo River, and it's about a 15-minute walk to Yasaka Pagoda, which is perfect for an early morning visit to avoid the crowds! They also offer a simple complimentary breakfast. There's a popular soba noodle shop nearby that I visited twice during my stay – it was delicious!

Super duper love this hotel! There’s free flow sake till 9pm daily. We stayed there for 6 nights and enjoyed sake almost every night. We even bought a box of sake when we checked out :) The room was big and comfy. There’s a washing machine inside the room, very convenient. We will definitely stay here again when we visit Kyoto next time 🙂

The hotel was quite new, clean, and well designed it a dark atmosphere, which makes it feel calm. The only downside might be the location, but still walkable from Kyoto Station and subway Gojo station.
