"Lovely stay to top off my solo exploration of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine route, Hakuba and Matsumoto. It had the most comfortable room with every amenities and service thought of for travellers, like free coffee at the lobby, restaurant dinner service, luggage storage and forwarding from Toyama Dentetsu Station, coin vending machines and laundry facilities, a public bath after a full day outdoors. The breakfast was also plentiful, extensive and delicious. Location is just opposite Shinano Omachi JR Station and Ogizawa bus stop. After three days of hikes and mountain huts, I was grateful for all the creature comforts. Will stay here again when I return in other seasons."
"Great location near shuttle bus stops to the ski slopes.
Affordable and good especially the western style rooms.
Friendly staff that will help you and make it feel homey and welcomed."
"I like this hotel very much. The room is super big and there is an outdoor heated bathtub. You can take a bath anytime without waiting. The snow scene outside the window is beautiful, and it is a great place to check in. The hotel's hot spring is also quite large and not crowded. You can choose Japanese or Western breakfast, and the Japanese style is quite exquisite. It takes about 30 minutes to go skiing in Hakuba, and it is very convenient to drive. The rooms are well maintained and the beds are very comfortable. It is also very convenient to go skiing in Hakuba, and it is more cost-effective than living in Hakuba."
"The room is clean and comfortable, there is a hot spring upstairs, it is comfortable to take a bath after skiing! The breakfast and dinner are exquisite, and the service attitude of the restaurant is very good.
On the day of check-out, the reservation made a few days in advance 🚕 did not come for a long time 😮💨
Ask the front desk to help check the status of the taxi, the heavy snow caused traffic congestion
The taxi is on the way, and the arrival time is unknown. The uncle at the front desk offered to drive us to Shinnong Omachi Station himself, which is really heartwarming."
"Everything was ok, quite standard. It was clean and really, no problems.
I only have a slight issue with the toilet: The shared toilet is shockingly small, and for the female one, it says that 2 can fit in there. Thankfully I was alone for my showers if not it would be really awkward. I also found it weird how if the main toilet door opens, the person changing can be seen by anyone outside. :(
Otherwise, it was a pleasant stay and a good rest point for those going on the kurobe alpine route trail."
"It's very close to the station. Although you can't tell from the outside, the proprietress seems very friendly. There is a refrigerator, microwave, and bathing area (before 10 o'clock) which is great"
"Not far from Shinano Omachi Station, the transportation is convenient. Hotels run by ********* are relatively convenient for communication, but the understanding of the landlady is a bit out of sync with ours...
Clean, I chose a room with a bathroom, but it was different from other rooms in Japan
Compared with business hotels, there is no advantage in price and service.
The worst thing is that there are no curtains and it's already dark after 4 o'clock in the morning.
I couldn't sleep, so I caught the early bus and set off with my luggage.
The luggage storage area doesn't open until nearly 8 o'clock"
"I’ve stayed at many ryokans throughout my travels—often making up half of each trip—but this one felt a bit different.
It seemed to be run by just one person, who I assume is the owner. Everything was self-service, which might be understandable considering it was the most affordable option among the ryokans in the area.
Most amenities required an extra fee, such as towels. Payment was made by dropping coins into a basket and making your own change, which wasn’t very convenient—especially since I didn’t carry much cash.
One thing I appreciated was the luggage delivery service. I was able to leave my bag at the lobby before check-out and have it sent to Toyama Station (for about 4,000 JPY, cash only).
What stood out was the creativity in the shared spaces. There were several common rooms designed for relaxing and spending time—perfect if you’re traveling with friends. You could play ping pong, read books, watch TV, or use the canteen, which had a microwave and dishes available.
They even had coin-operated massage chairs and a small fitness room.
However, I must mention two important downsides:
1. Limited nearby dining options – Many restaurants shown as open on Google Maps were actually closed. The only one that was open had extremely slow service—I waited nearly an hour for dinner.
2. Insects—large ones – Unfortunately, I encountered big insects in my room, which made it hard to sleep. (He even provided insect-catch tape for me while introduce the room) I stayed awake most of the night, worrying it might come back—especially stressful since I had to get up early the next morning to catch a bus to Ogizawa.
Minds you, stairs only, need to carry your luggage down by yourself.
Overall, while it offers good value for the area and has unique communal features, this ryokan may not suit travelers who prefer full service, cashless payment, or guaranteed comfort."
"It was raining on the day we arrived, but it wasn't cold and we were able to sleep peacefully in our private room. It would be nice if the shower had a little more hot water, but it was okay. I think it's a good place to stay before climbing a mountain. The staff were kind and explained things to us carefully, which made me feel at ease.
Shinano Omachi was a town I had been following on Instagram and wanted to visit."

Great
SseeseaflyWe stayed in the hotel for one week. We like the hotel a lot.
- Staff are nice and helpful, especially a passionate guy at the front desk. They helped us book restaurants and deal with toll payment.
- Breakfast is great. We haven’t felt bored after one week given many varieties. Especially they have “today’s special”, different omelette every day. We like the wasabi cheese omelette. On the other hand, dinner buffet was ordinary. Food became cold. With the same price, we had a nice 7-course French dinner in a nearby restaurant.
- Room is nice and clean, although a bit small. Bed is comfortable with different pillows. We have some difficulty to allocate our big suitcase in the room without block the way.
However, we noticed poor management for laundry room and emergency cases.
- There are only two washing machines. Some people put clothes on washing machines or nearby for queuing. We waited in-person for 15min several times, but someone claimed they came earlier, or said they need to add additional time for dry. We had to wait until midnight to do laundry.
- Nice onsen, but poor emergency handling. One day I heard voices from speaker for >15min during shower, and then realized it was from a cell phone when I was in indoor bath pool. A lady with black glasses was using the phone in the pool (not sure if taking photos or videos)! I felt very uncomfortable and went to the outdoor onsen. But she came to outdoor onsen shortly. I went back to indoor onsen, and saw the phone on a chair beside the indoor onsen. Another guest also expressed her concern to me. I called emergency phone in changing room, said three times “someone is using cell phone in bathing area, please send a female staff asap”. Unfortunately the guy who answered the call does not understand English. 5mins later he came to the door of changing room, asking who called SOS. I told him again, and he finally understood, but did nothing except asked my room number. After we checked out the next day, the guy saw me and told me in Japanese that “sorry, but we will improve in future” (showed English translation to me).
I was very disappointed. 1) Why did the hotel ask a guy who doesn’t understand English to take care of female onsen? What if someone fainted? 2) No actions were taken after I reported issue. No one came to stop the issue, no one checked whether inappropriate photos/videos were taken.
Whole staff are nice, the hotel is poorly managed in some places.
AAnonymous User1. The house is very clean and well-maintained, with complete cooking utensils, dishes, cups and bowls, and a large refrigerator. You own the entire house, including a dining room, living room and 2 bedrooms. Parking is also very convenient next to the house.
2. It is a 20-minute drive from Ogizawa Station, suitable for those who drive to visit Tateyama Kurobe.
3. On the first night, we encountered a magnitude 5 earthquake in Nagano. The epicenter was nearby and the whole house was shaking noticeably. The staff arrived quickly to inquire about the guests’ safety and were very attentive.
4. It is suggested to add a sofa, because not everyone likes to sit on the floor in the Japanese style.
5. Please bring your own slippers, toothbrush and toothpaste as they are not provided.
CChristyI am highly recommended to the couple and family stay with this hotel
The check-in is very personal, room set up are incredible.
All the staff are very nice, helpful and professional.
The food was great in all seasonal dishes. The dish presentation is like a piece of art.
The Osen facility is cozy and nice. You can't miss the outdoor osen with the nature
BBaba Yaga modernRelax, relax, relax. Ryokan.
Breakfasts and dinners in traditional style are great. Onsen - indoor and outdoor pool, in the evenings we watched martens running, silence. The room is simply huge for Japan (about 40 sq.m). They give out traditional clothes. Nearby is a transport stop (we went for a ride to the Happo area, Hakuba 47, Iwataki) and an information center.
DDarcy. WThe rooms on the 4th level in the main building can only be accessed by stairs from the 3rd level. Not very ideal if you have a lot of luggage.
We got the dinner and breakfast buffet plan and the food is not bad as they have free flow snow crab and beer and sake.
The drive there was easy with no winding roads and passing by large fields. Nice scenery.
GGuest UserNice place for one night stay before going the alpen route, close to the nearest convenient store from the station(i.e. the closest one is 10min away from station XD) the staff is very nice, has warm water in toilet and washing area. The room has a kettle of hot water, tower, tooth brush set, and anything you need for a night, surprised that the kettle is still keeping the water hot drinking water after a whole night and I don't need to get the water again in the morning. sorry that the photo was taken in late night and may look a bit dark, it's better than it looks
GGuest UserThe starting point in front of Tateyama Kurobe is very convenient, the room is large, the equipment is good, the staff is good, the service is good, especially Mr. Jin from China, he is polite, attentive and helpful, a first-class waiter
My special thanks to Mr Jin from ************** who offer first class services to guest.
YYumaoshenshuangchiThe hotel room is nice and large. The order includes breakfast and dinner. Breakfast is a buffet and dinner is a traditional Japanese set meal. The hot spring is also very comfortable and cost-effective.
AAmsal LakhaniVery very helpful staff. We had injury when we arrived here and stayed for 3 nights and the staff was very cooperative and helpful during this time of distress.
