Hibarino | A Garden Retreat in Sengokuhara, Hakone
Tucked in Sengokuhara, one of Hakone's celebrated hot spring districts, Hibarino is a garden ryokan built on the quiet beauty of wabi-sabi. Each of its 11 rooms, spread across five distinct categories, opens onto its own semi-open-air bath — steam curling into view of a dry rock garden and rustling bamboo. Soak beneath the stars, and the noise of the everyday fades away.
Arrival begins with a patissier's welcome sweet in the lounge. Come evening, a kaiseki dinner built from ingredients sourced across Japan carries the meal through the seasons, followed by cocktails and local sake at the Bar Space, where the evening slows to its own rhythm.
A partnership with beauty innovator Reborn brings stem-cell-derived essence into the bath water and in-room showers — a rare pairing of onsen and cutting-edge skincare.
Sengokuhara itself is an art lover's stretch of Hakone, home to the Glass Forest Museum and the POLA Museum of Art nearby. Twenty minutes by car from Gotemba IC, with free on-site parking, or 45 minutes by bus from Odawara Station — Hibarino makes an easy, unhurried base for exploring Hakone.
"Just checked out from this hot spring hotel and couldn't wait to leave a glowing review!
The most striking impression of my stay was how *new* everything felt. The hotel must have opened recently, as the overall decor is modern and minimalist, and everything is sparkling clean and well-maintained. It made for a very comfortable stay.
♨️ Must-Praise Highlight: The private hot spring bath in the room
I originally booked this hotel specifically for the in-room hot spring, and it certainly didn't disappoint! The hot spring bath is tucked away in a corner of the room, beautifully designed, and genuine hot spring water flows directly from the tap. Being brand new, the stone of the tub and the surrounding area are impeccably maintained, completely free of any old stains or odors. For someone a bit of a clean freak like me, being able to confidently strip down and soak in a private space without worrying about the cleanliness of a public bath was a huge plus. I took a dip before bed and again after waking up in the morning, enjoying the view outside the window – all my fatigue just melted away.
Beyond the hot spring, the room's other amenities were also fully equipped, showing the hotel's attention to detail.
I also have to commend the service team here. The front desk staff spoke both Chinese and English, so communication was absolutely seamless. They were friendly, professional, and went above and beyond to help with travel recommendations.
Overall, if you're looking for a clean, stylish, and relaxing getaway where you can enjoy private hot spring moments, this place is definitely the perfect choice. I'll certainly be back if I get the chance!"
