Romantic Hotels in Takayama

We were lucky to stay at Mercure Takayami on their opening night. Everything about the hotel was above our expectations. Rooms were a very comfortable with attention to detail. Having USB and USB C charging ports for our electronics next to the bed was very convenient and meant we didn't need to search for our Japan power adaptors. This hotel has been well designed with a focus on local traditional carpentry and joinery skills. When you book this hotel make sure you book a room that includes access to the private Onsen. We had an open-air experience while we watched the snow from our private onsen. Breakfast had an extensive range of Tradition Hida dishes and Western choices, with different options available each day. This was a great way to try Hida Beef Curry and Hida chicken cooked on a traditional grill. Staff were very helpful going above and beyond with their dedicated and personal service, even searching the internet for me to find a store that sold Yama Cola. We will be back to stay again and will try to stay longer next time.

Location is convenient and overall service is good but there are better choices around definitely. Dinner and breakfast spread quite limited. Nice view of the garden but on 2 occasions the elderly Japanese just ignored the reserved tag I placed on the table and took my seats… suggest to place a more visible belongings to reserve it. Western room is adequate 18sqm. Poor noise cancellation as noise echos 20m down the hallways, metal room doors slamming, chairs dragging and phone vibrates in the next room can be heard. Not recommended if you’re a light or early sleeper, especially guests moving in/out along the corridors to take onsen bath. The hotel also hosts tour groups. Witnessed a tour group of Europeans. Koreans speaking on phone at hallways…etc.

The atmosphere of the inn was very good, but to get to the room, I had to change elevators twice, walk a long corridor, and finally take the stairs to the upper floor. It is necessary to walk in the opposite direction each time to go to the public bath and to eat. It is difficult for the elderly and those with weak legs. We used the early bird reservation and national travel support to stay cheaper than usual, so I wondered if it was the furthest room (laughs). I couldn't take a long bath slowly, but the person in charge was just checking the temperature, so when I asked, the open-air bath was 42.9 degrees. A small child with a family shouted ”hot, hot” and left early. After all, I only entered the large public bath once, and after that, I adjusted the temperature of the bath in the room. One more thing, all three hair dryers in the public bath did not work even when I pressed the button, so I used the one in the room. When I asked my wife, she said, ``I couldn't use it at first, but someone else told me to use it by pressing the other switch at the back.'' I couldn't use it, maybe it's my fault, I wanted you to write a manual (sorry if I overlooked it)

This hotel is centrally located, just next to the Mercure. You leave your shoes in a locker and walk along the common areas barefooted or wearing socks. It's quite a hassle putting on shoes in the reception area to leave the hotel. The drawback of this system is that some guests remove the shoe cabinet keys when they check out. There's a pair of sandals in the room which you wear when you go to the toilet. This is different from other hotels in Japan where you can wear the sandals around the hotel. I cannot recommend this ryokan enough!! We stayed for two nights end of March/start of April. The staff were so friendly and patient, taking time to explain aspects of the hotel, onsen, and how to wear the traditional clothes. They made the evening meal and breakfast so accessible to foreigners by explaining each element, and a menu in English also helped! The new ladies onsen nextdoor allows you try different onsen locations, and I would really recommend a massage! I lucked out by going over at 3pm and had the onsen to myself! You will leave feeling so relaxed and well taken care of! We luckily had a room with river views which was stunning and a balcony to enjoy a cup of tea from and watch the people below. What an amazing way to unwind from the travel and rushing around the big city. The walks around the town are easy to get to from this hotel, and their shuttle service to and from the station is so helpful, and the drivers are so friendly!! We absolutely loved our stay, and it has rejuvenated us for our onward travel. Thank you so much to all the staff!

This place was unexpected. We wanted to be in the center of town and have Western beds and booking from afar was a bit difficult so we found this online and went for it. We arrived and found a sort of dated but comfortable hotel with lovely staff. It was a bit formal with lots of rules about set menus and what time breakfast would be served. But the instructions were in English and the manager/owner and all the help were very helpful.

８ Month ２７ 2 nights from day. When I arrived at the hotel, it rained and parked in front of the entrance. １ time until check-in in the lobby. Immediately from the east building where the front lounge is located, the south building. There is a footbath at the end of the aisle and towels are also placed. Take the elevator to the ６ floor. Be careful as the elevator door closes early. The view from the room is mountains. The twin is large enough. The toilet and washroom in the unit bath are good. It's a pity that there is only one room key １. The large communal bath is on the １ floor of the East Building. There is no replacement for men and women. There are about 10 showers in the indoor bath. There is also an open-air bath. Charcoal is burned in the fireplace in front of the entrance of the indoor bath. There are also billiards. There is a heated pool with a depth of 90 cm outside. Although it is not big, there are few hotels in Okuhida with a pool. The meal is Fuyo, a suzuya on the 2nd floor of the East Building, and Japanese food is served with evening breakfast. It is good that there is no tempura in the kaiseki. Alcohol is cheap. There are two smoking areas, the terrace in front of the lobby of the East Building and the wooden deck outside the rest area with the fireplace in the South Building. The next day, around 13:00, I got on a slope car and went to the famous mixed bath open-air bath ”Yari no Yu”. The largest area in Okuhida, certainly wide. If the weather is nice, you can see Mt. Yarigatake. The man is half-pants style. Women wear shoulder-style bathing clothes. There is a dehydrator in the changing room for women, but not for boys. 　 　

I can't comment on value as this was part of a cycle tour with my bike club (BAC) and Cycling Japan, but my room was really lovely and quiet with a great view. I loved the comfy bed and ergonomic desk chair. The onsen was on the top floor and really lovely with inside and outside pools. The staff was super helpful (the manager helped me find and reserve a wonderful dinner choice - Bistro Kanzo) and breakfast was also really good with local items (not your too-often too many overcooked and deep-fried items). Also, a perfect location for exploring Takayama. This is my 4th trip to Japan and I have stayed in so many accommodations on cycling and hiking tours, so I do have some context. For me, Alpina checked all of the boxes: room, view, staff, breakfast, onsen, location.

Set up a steep little road above the beautiful town of Takayama is the lovely Ryokan Hoshokaku. You’ll be greeted at the door and after removing your shoes, your host will guide you through your stay, meals and the use of the onsen before giving you your key to the room. Please take the opportunity to immerse yourself into this traditional inn. The meals are amazing, possibly the best we ate in all of Japan and the onsen is relaxing & peaceful. Breakfast was good, but the Japanese-style room 2010 was a bit dated! On February 2nd, the Shirakawa-mura Lighting Festival, the house price doubled more than 3,000 a night! There is a theft in booking a room in Japan: the room is charged according to the number of people. This room can accommodate 3 to 6 people. You can book 3 people for 4 people and 3 or 4 people for 5 people. living!
