The third time staying in this hotel over the past 5 years. Disappointingly, no improvement was seen, particularly the quality of food presumably to be of high quality for luxurious rooms with private onsen. Routinized Japanese Haute cuisine with no surprise, four small pieces of signature Hida wagyu could only be seen as a decoration. Yet the price was relatively high with over five hundred US dollars for a two-person one night stay (breakfast and dinner included). The service, the food, the environment, etc. require considerable improvement.

located in okuhida onsen area, so we can go enjoy various kind of scenery onsen places during that day as well. kamikochi is less than an hour through hirayu bus station. after a walking day at kamikochi soaking in the hotel public bath was so satisfying.enjoying a bottle of sake atthe hotel garden in front of its bath house is one of the highlights of our stay. the service is excellent, everybody is so attentive.  the breakfast is very good and the excellent dinner kept coming, almost couldn’t finish, the local beef main course is so delicious. the quality goes far beyond the price, highly recommended.

Hirayu Onsen Hirata-kan Stay Review 📍Location: Conveniently located within Hirayu Onsen village, easily walkable from Hirayu Onsen Station. Restaurants and convenience stores are also readily accessible nearby. 🍱Meals: - Dinner and breakfast are typical Japanese kaiseki-style meals. The ingredients are fresh and the selection is abundant. The local Hida beef dishes were particularly outstanding; the meat was tender and seasoned perfectly. - The miso soup, grilled fish, and pickles at breakfast were all authentic and clearly prepared with care. - The staff were prompt with serving and clearing dishes, making for a comfortable dining experience. 🛁Facilities (Hot Springs): - The hot spring baths are indeed a bit dated, and maintenance is average, with some areas showing clear signs of age. - The indoor onsen pool is on the smaller side, feeling a bit crowded when there are many people. The outdoor bath offers a nice view, but the pool structure and surrounding decor have a rather retro feel. - The hot spring water itself is excellent; my skin felt very smooth after soaking, and it was very effective at relieving fatigue. 🛏️Guest Room: - The Japanese-style room was spacious, and the tatami mats were laid out comfortably. The bedding was soft, leading to good sleep quality. - The in-room bathroom facilities were also a bit old-fashioned but fully functional and clean. 💡Summary: If you're coming for an authentic Japanese kaiseki meal and onsen experience, this place offers good value for money. However, if you have high expectations for modern and refined hot spring facilities and amenities, you might find it a bit underwhelming. Overall, it's an old establishment with the traditional atmosphere of a Japanese onsen ryokan, suitable for travelers who appreciate a nostalgic feel.

The assigned room was not the one I booked. Instead of East Wing with a mountain view, I got assigned to South Wing, not sure if it is a mountain view but definitely not what I expected (I will attach a photo). But generally, I still had a fantastic experience there. The location is great for me because it is near Shinhotaka Ropeway. The open air onsen was beautiful, I liked it a lot, and went every night. The food was fantastic too! I am not well versed with Japanese food culture, but basically it was the traditional course meal (only dinner) you probably will have in a decent Japanese restaurant. I am a vegetarian, the hotel is prepared for my diet every breakfast and dinner. I must say I am really amazed with their food culture and knife skill. Their front desk was helpful with my needs too like a nail cutter, plaster etc.

Ryokan Gizan

Our stay at Ryokan Gizan was a truly memorable experience. This is a traditionally built and decorated Japanese ryokan, with tatami floors, sliding doors, and an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a “must-visit” if you’re looking to experience traditional Japanese accommodation — even a short stay of 2–3 nights is enough to make it special. The ryokan is quite old, which actually adds to its authentic charm, though it might feel a bit less comfortable for more demanding guests. That said, it’s very well maintained and everything is clean and thoughtfully arranged. The onsen facilities were excellent — one public bath and four private ones that you can use freely. After long days of exploring, it was a real treat. We highly recommend booking with the traditional dinner included. The meals were a highlight: we had Yakiniku the first night and Shabu-shabu the second, both featuring fresh, generous portions of delicious food. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese set — beautifully presented and made with care, though not quite to our personal taste. The location is stunning — surrounded by mountains, rivers, and blossoming trees. It feels peaceful and remote. Just note that amenities like ATMs or grocery stores are limited nearby. However, it’s well connected by bus (just a 3-minute walk from the ryokan), which can take you to Kamikochi or the terminals at Takayama and Hirayu Onsen. Buses run about once an hour, so it’s quite manageable. Overall, a fantastic stay — relaxing, unique, and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Japan.

Okada Ryokan Warakutei

I had a very relaxing three-night stay at Okada Ryokan. The service was excellent—staff were consistently warm and attentive, especially during meal times, which made the experience feel extra special. The food was simple and clean. I enjoyed it a lot but I was getting a little bored of it by the 5th meal. We added on a hida beef steak after seeing a few Japanese tourist ordering it. If you like fatty and soft beef, you should try it. The public onsen is spacious, with four pools. The outdoor pool is big and quiet. The room was comfortable and well heated for winter. The private onsen in the room was a highlight; it easily fits two people and was perfect for relaxing after a long day. This ryokan is over 100 years old, with parts of the structure dating back around 150 years. For a building of that age, I’d say it’s been well maintained. A small part of me wish the bathroom could be newer and cleaner but I would be missing the whole point. Staying here truly feels like stepping back in time—it was a unique and memorable experience. There are two local ski resorts within a 15-minute drive, and Takayama is about a 45-minute drive away.

I stayed with my two-year-old daughter and stayed in different Japanese-style hotels many times. This time I booked two hotels in Shinhotaka/Hirayu Onsen. This is the first one. The location and view of the hotel are very good. The decoration is very good. Food is good. The front desk supervisor sister is also very good and hard-working. I would like to praise her. He also said that there are currently not enough staff to require tolerance. But some services are not in place. The hot spring pool and floors were not cleaned properly and there was a lot of moss. I almost slipped and fell several times! It was too dangerous and felt dirty. Perhaps to save money, the heating was not turned on in the passages and the entire public space was too cold. In addition, you can actually pull your luggage into the room from outside. . I was worried about the tatami mats in the passageway I came all the way to. . There are also concerns about overall hygiene. People have to take off their shoes when entering the hotel, but wheels are not required 😂 Two waiters in the restaurant. One can also make the other girl keep a straight face the whole time. When the small basin was dirty and I asked for it to be replaced, I was told ”No” - I don't know what kind of Japanese service this is. In addition, the hotel (the day I stayed) was mostly occupied by foreign guests. . The menu is also in English in Japanese format (haha!). It is estimated that this restaurant mainly caters to Western customers, but it is not a traditional Japanese service.

The room is large and has air conditioning, so we didn't feel cold even though the temperature was -16 degrees Celsius that night. Since the area is remote and it's not convenient to go out for meals, it's best to check in at dusk and enjoy the dinner provided here. The dinner here is quite large and can fill you up.
