Hestasport Cottages

Hestasport cottages are not just a place to stay, it's a whole world of experience. It's a truly magical environment of a few good size traditional wooden cabins nestled on top of a hill above the village with a hot tube in the middle. We rented the biggest one and I highly recommend it for a family especially of you stay for a few days like we did. The cabin was very clean, nicely decorated, high ceilings and full of natural light. We cooked at home every evening and found the kitchen to be very well equipped. Finding the place was very easy. Like they told us, as long as you understand that the reception is not where the cottages are, not a problem at all. Communication with the management was very smooth. We too initially had booked for 2020 but had to cancel due to to covid and they graciously refunded us. Finally we managed to stay and we loved every minute of it. In the area I highly recommend to visit the 1238 The battle of Iceland museum and virtual experience, have a cold one in Retro Mathus in Hofsos, visit the stunning waterfalls of Reykjafoss, Glaumbaer traditional houses etc. We didn't do horse riding but saw a lot of riders and looked like fun. There is also white river rafting nearby. The area is so beautiful, plenty to do and staying in this stunning place is a truly authentic experience.

Nicely decorated old house (we were staying in the main building) with well-functioning everything (friendly and welcoming staff, decent décor, nice toiletries, well-stocked coffee station in the room, WIFI, clean but a little bit too dark rooms with a few nice historic features). We had a snack in the restaurant in the evening, and we did have breakfast - both went well, I would perhaps consider adding local cheese for breakfast (would definitely make hotel standout compared to the competitors). This is one of the oldest houses in the country, so please be aware that it's not as sound-proof, as one might've wanted (but there are earplugs for light sleepers). The sink in the bathroom was a little bit worn off and shall be lined up for a replacement. You will need to take stairs - it's an old building, there's no elevator (and I didn't dislike it - just a thing to keep in mind when making a reservation).

We stayed one night in a ground floor room overlooking the parking lot. This was convenient for suitcases but we had absolutely no view. It was cold and rainy and it would have been nice for some kind of water view with comfortable chairs available for all guests. The room was very basic. The family sharing the kitchen on the other side of our bedroom wall made a tremendous amount of noise but thankfully they quieted down by the time we went to bed. We had a huge problem with the shower which immediately flooded the bathroom and part of the sleeping area. We had no equipment to clear out the water ourselves and called the number that came with the room instructions. After about 15 minutes a woman arrived in boots and with the necessaries to take care of the flood. She said she found tons of hair in the drain, as if someone had a haircut. She also said that we were ”lucky” this happened today because the week before she was someplace else. We were left wondering what we would have done if she hadn't been available as the bathroom was unusable. We were glad we were only staying one night.
