This is a difficult review to write. There’s a lot I like about Joke Inn - it’s in a cool location, the room was nice,and the staff are friendly. And I should mention - I don’t have experience with the inner, courtyard facing rooms - this is just about street-facing rooms…. I saw the reviews talking about noise and figured it was just normal street noise - which as a New Yorker I’m fine with. But what we experienced was FAR beyond regular street noise. We had a room facing the street (and the Xi’an city wall) and the issue is that there are two live music venues on the ground floor that compete by blasting the music - which bounces off the city wall into the room. The music goes until 2am every night (not just weekends). The earplugs they give you don’t even begin to be enough. After getting just 4 hours of sleep the first night I managed the next 3 nights by taking a sleeping pill and wearing huge uncomfortable noise canceling headphones. That should never be necessary in a hotel. So the bottom line in my opinion is the owners need to figure out if they’re in the entertainment business or the hotel business because the two don’t mix - at least not for the street-facing rooms.

It was a perfect place. We got a message from the hotel, that our room would be noisy. When we arrived they gave us a better room for free which was less noisy. The hotel was totally renovated but in a chinese way, and every day there were new bottles of water. We highly recommend this hotel and the friendly staff

At first we were really impressed by this hotel, it does look good and during the day it is in the most lovely neighborhood. However, at night is when the nightmare begins. It is surrounded by bars and a NIGHTCLUB literally next door. The noise at night is unbearable, the first two nights they stopped the karaoke and the music at around 2 am, or at least that's the time we were able to fall asleep, but the third night the nightclub was open and we couldn't sleep until 6 am (yes, 6 am). We could literally hear the DJ hyping the crowd, it was horrible and surreal. After the first night we complained about the noise and asked for a room on the back of the hotel, but the host told us the only room available was one with the windows on the main street. So I asked about the cancellation policy and suddenly another room in the back got available. Now, I'm not sure that room was really supposed to be for guests as its conditions were appalling and not comparable to the previous room. Dead mosquitoes were smashed on every wall and ceiling of the room, with zero effort from the staff to remove them. There was damp everywhere, you couldn't shut the window in the toilet as there was a hole in the external wall, no hooks to hang the towels... One morning we went downstairs at 8.15 to get coffee and the lady at the bar confusedly gesticoulated that she couldn't make the coffee, so we texted the guy on WeChat who told us they would start making coffee at 8.30. Here's why the low score on the service too. After I was up all night because of the noise they made me come back 15 minutes after for a cup of coffee. Appalling hospitality. Unbelievable. The only positive aspects of the hotel is the free self-service laundry, and when on the first day one of the guys helped us order some batteries from the Chinese amazon. I hate leaving bad reviews especially as this place is run (I believe) by a young group of people, but this place really spoiled our time in Xi'an, as the lack of sleep can be very problematic especially when you're out exploring all day. I appreciate the offer of changing the room, but every single room in the building is extremely noisy, so it doesn't make any difference.

Lovely place with a wonderful charm about it. Located right near the city wall near all the sight and buzz that Xian can offer. Staff is super friendly and helpful and serve wonderful coffee as well. If I visit Xian again, I would definitely pick this place again.

The hotel is located right next to the city wall and in an epicenter of the city life, so it’s a mix of history and a bustling weekend nightlife. Great place.
