Macau Transport

Getting around Macau is actually very easy, even for first-time visitors. The city is small, everything is close by, and most areas are connected by buses, free hotel shuttles, and even a light rail. Whether you're coming in by ferry, plane, or crossing over from Hong Kong, Zhuhai, or Shenzhen, you’ll have no problem finding transportation. In this guide, I’ll show you the simplest and most budget-friendly ways to travel around Macau, so you can enjoy your trip without any hassle.

✈️ Macau Airport Transfers

Macau Airport

When you land at Macau International Airport (MFM), getting to your hotel is simple. Whether you're heading to Taipa, Cotai, or the Macau Peninsula, there are several easy ways to travel. Just choose what fits your budget, time, and how much luggage you have.

🚌 Public Bus from the Airport

You’ll find bus stops just outside the arrival area on the lower floor. Buses go to major areas like Taipa, Cotai, Macau Peninsula, ferry terminals, and the border gate.

  • Fare: MOP 6.0 (around PHP 40 or SGD 1.00). Prepare exact coins or use a Macau Pass.
  • Travel Time: About 20 to 30 minutes to Taipa or Cotai. It takes a bit longer to reach the Macau Peninsula.
  • Operating Hours: Most buses run from 6:00 AM until midnight.
  • Tip: Good for solo or light travelers. It can get crowded during peak hours.

🚖 Taxi

Taxi stands are located right outside the airport exit. All taxis are metered, so you pay based on distance.

  • Estimated Cost:
    • Taipa or Cotai hotels: around MOP 30 to 50 (about PHP 200 to 350)
    • Macau Peninsula: around MOP 60 to 100 (about PHP 400 to 700)
  • Travel Time: About 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Tip: Not all drivers speak English. It helps to show your hotel address in Chinese.

🚗 Hotel Shuttle or Private Car

Many large hotels in Macau offer shuttle buses or private car services. These usually pick you up right at the airport arrivals area.

  • Travel Time: Around 15 to 25 minutes.
  • Cost:
    • Hotel shuttles: Usually free if you’re a guest. Just show your booking.
    • Private cars: More costly than taxis but more comfortable, especially if you have big luggage or are with family.
  • Tip: Some hotel shuttles need to be booked ahead. Double-check with your hotel.

  • Macau International Airport

Arrived from Senado Square in the early evening after a 20-minute walk through several alleys, finding a quiet spot. You can see the Macau Tower right from the hotel entrance on the roadside. The hotel is located halfway up the hill and is clean. My room, which faced the mountain, seemed newly renovated, was very comfortable and spacious. There were shuttle bus reminders in the lobby. That evening, following Baidu Maps, I walked less than 800 meters down to the street for dinner and discovered the stunning night view of the peninsula, with drone shows and the International Light Festival ongoing, creating a strong Christmas atmosphere. Walking back on a different path, I realized how convenient the location truly is. The next morning, I walked to A-Ma Temple Station; the walk up the hill was refreshing, and the surrounding area was full of villas. I'm really pleased I chose this place; it offers great value for money, and I would definitely choose it again next time.

Our stay at Sofitel Macau at Ponte 16 was absolutely delightful and exceeded our expectations in every way. The hotel is perfectly located in the heart of the historic district, just steps away from Senado Square, Ruins of St. Paul’s, and many cultural landmarks. It offers the perfect balance between luxury comfort and easy access to Macau’s heritage attractions. The room was spacious, beautifully designed, and extremely comfortable. The bed was plush, the bathroom was spotless with premium amenities, and the view of the Inner Harbour added a special touch to our mornings.

So incredibly satisfied! Traveling with a two-and-a-half-year-old was completely stress-free! The hotel room was spacious, and the complimentary extra bed was also large. They offered free stroller service, and the kids' play area was like a kindergarten – my child didn't want to leave! There's also a swimming pool and spa. The Ruins of St. Paul's and the Science Center are nearby. The hotel is right next to Sands, and it's convenient to get anywhere by shuttle bus, taxi, or public bus. The service was thoughtful and meticulous, and the hotel's restaurants were delicious too! I've already recommended it to my friends with kids!

I had a very satisfying stay overall. My only minor regret was not getting upgraded to an Eiffel Tower view room, but I was given a high-floor room, specifically room 073, which offered a beautiful sunrise view 🌅, so that was also great. The mini-bar in the room was complimentary, and there were many dining options available on the hotel's ground floor. Right in front of the hotel, there's a bus stop with numerous routes, making transportation very convenient. The hotel is located right next to The Parisian, so you can easily walk to see the Eiffel Tower.

Old Putin didn't see any renovations this time, but it's definitely different from before. The service is still quite satisfactory; the front desk staff, both guys and girls, are very dedicated and responsible. They'll carefully explain how to do things and even help you carry all your luggage upstairs. Although the room isn't as big as before, all the facilities are quite complete. The best part is that they even provide Hermes toiletries! The hotel is right in front of the bus terminal, so you can get anywhere you want to go. It's also convenient to get to Rua do Cunha, and you can even walk to the Ruins of St. Paul's.

This hotel is excellent! The family room's kids' bed is so spacious that even my 1.8-meter-tall son could sleep comfortably in it. Everything about this hotel meets five-star standards. The bottled water service and the staff's attitude are leagues above what you'd find in Hong Kong. The hotel's location is also superb, right on the Macau Peninsula, and there's a National Geographic photo spot directly in front of the entrance. The hotel's afternoon tea is also fantastic. The food is delicious, the ambiance is wonderful, and it's so relaxing to enjoy a leisurely afternoon tea after a tiring day of sightseeing.

This popular hotel is really crowded, with many tourists checking in just to experience it. The hotel offers a shuttle bus service to Taipa Ferry Terminal. The shopping arcade on the third floor has a wide variety of brands, and some stores even had promotions during Christmas. The hotel room facilities are a bit dated, but they are spacious enough, and the staff are all very friendly. There's a shuttle bus back to Hengqin in the evening, but the last one departs at 8:20 PM, so don't be late!

The hotel has a very festive appearance, with many rows of large red lanterns at the entrance and an impressive lobby. The room is very spacious, and it was comfortable even with three friends staying together. The breakfast buffet offers a rich variety of delicious food, and they refill items very quickly. Excellent! Located in the old district of Macau Peninsula, it's convenient for dining, accommodation, entertainment, and shopping. Personally, I think it offers better value for money than staying in Taipa. From the Gongbei Port, you can take the Sands or Grand Lisboa shuttle bus, and it's about a 10-minute walk from the drop-off point. For your return journey, you can also take the Sands shuttle back to the Border Gate. There's a bus stop right outside the hotel (bus route 3) that goes to the Ruins of St. Paul's, which is also just over a 1km walk away. The Fisherman's Wharf, Sands, MGM, Wynn, and StarWorld are all within walking distance too. The hotel management staff are polite and humble, and the rooms are very spacious and clean. It's quiet at night, ensuring a good rest. All in all, it was a very comfortable stay. I visit Macau frequently and will definitely stay here again next time.

We booked a triple room with proper beds for 3 pax. During check in, staff asked if we can take a twin room with an add on bed as the last triple room available has smoking smell. Staff brought us to see the room. The room is squeezy but we sensed that the advice is to take the twin room. In the end we decided to take the triple room which we have paid for and asked for air filter in the room. Staff was not as friendly compared to other hotels we stayed.

I originally booked a standard sea view room, but upon arrival, I was upgraded to an executive room for an additional 300 MOP over two nights. Coming from Hong Kong by ferry, the hotel's location right next to the pier made check-in incredibly convenient; it was just a 10-minute walk. The hotel is very large, like a castle. The room I stayed in was on the 3rd floor and had a musty smell, perhaps because it hadn't been occupied for a while or due to its proximity to the sea. Everything else was quite good, but don't expect a great view from the sea view room – the water is very murky and not particularly beautiful. The hotel staff were exceptionally warm and friendly, big thumbs up for their service! Taking a taxi from the hotel to Rua do Cunha cost 110 MOP, and to the Ruins of St. Paul's cost 45 MOP. The area around the hotel is a bit desolate and not very lively at night, as it's a residential area.

The hotel boasts an excellent location and is very quiet on a high floor, offering great value for money. The service was attentive. Right outside, there are plenty of options for quick bites and local snacks. Getting a taxi to the ferry terminal is quick and convenient. For those traveling from Macau to West Kowloon (High-Speed Rail Station) or Harbour City, taking a ferry to the appropriate passenger terminal is the most convenient option. However, if you arrive at the Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Terminal, it's best to go to Sheung Wan MTR station to connect to the subway. Do be prepared for a fair bit of walking in Hong Kong!

Location: Not centrally located on Taipa Island, but there are many free shuttle buses, and hotel guests even get priority boarding, which is very convenient. Environment: The hotel is directly across from MGM and not far from The Parisian. However, our window didn't have much of a view. The central garden of the hotel is beautiful, and children really enjoyed the maze. Service: The service was good. After staying one night, when the room was cleaned, they noticed a laptop and provided a cleaning cloth. They also helped tidy up the messy charging cables. Dining: The food court at Grand Lisboa Palace offers a wide variety of options. Rong Kee Beef Offal, that milk tea place, and the pineapple buns were all delicious.

It's an old hotel, over a decade old. While the overall layout is decent, the details definitely need an upgrade. There are too few power outlets, and they're quite loose, so I'd recommend bringing your own power strip if you have a lot of devices to charge. The male receptionist was great; seeing I was with two seniors in their seventies, he extended our checkout to 2 PM, which was excellent service. We chose this place mainly because it accommodates three people, is directly across from the Wynn Palace fountain, and has direct access to the Light Rail from the second floor of the hotel. This was super convenient for us, as we planned to use a mix of Light Rail and taxis for getting around.

🌟 Truly captivated by my stay at MO! 🌟 Undoubtedly Macau's top scenic spot, the luxurious Tower View Suite offers unparalleled views – one side facing the stunning sea, the other overlooking the Macau Tower. You can enjoy the sunset over the tower from your room in the evening, and witness the sunrise over the ocean from the pool in the morning. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking! Shenzhen is a bit farther but still easy to reach. You can take a direct bus or go by ferry to Hong Kong, then transfer to the train going to Shenzhen. Another option is crossing the Gongbei Border and taking a train from Zhuhai.

  • By bus: Around 2 to 3 hours
  • By ferry and train combo: Around 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Tip: The bus is more direct, but the ferry plus train route is more flexible if you also plan to visit Hong Kong
🥳 Pro Tip: Getting a China eSIM can help you stay connected while traveling in China.

Plan your routes ahead and mix transport options to save time. Use light rail or hotel shuttles for short trips, taxis or private cars for late-night rides, and walk to explore local streets. With simple planning, getting around becomes part of the fun.

FAQs about Macau Transport

  • What is the best way to get around Macau?

The best way depends on your location and budget. For short trips, use the Macau Light Rail or hotel shuttle buses. For longer trips or late nights, taxis or private transfers are more convenient. If you're sightseeing, walking is also a great option.
  • Can I use cash to pay for buses and light rail?

Yes, you can use exact cash for both. However, drivers do not give change, so prepare coins or small bills. The Macau Pass card is a more convenient option.
  • Is it easy to get a taxi in Macau?

Yes, but it can be difficult during peak hours or at night. You can hail one on the street, call for a taxi, or use the Macau taxi app.
  • Does the light rail go to tourist spots?

The Macau Light Rail mainly covers Taipa and Cotai. It connects to the airport, casinos, and shopping areas. For the Macau Peninsula (like Senado Square), you’ll need to take a bus or taxi.
  • Can I walk to tourist spots in Macau?

Yes, walking is easy and safe. Many attractions like Senado Square, Ruins of St. Paul’s, and A-Ma Temple are close to each other.
