Macau Transport

Getting around Macau is actually very easy, even for first-time visitors. The city is small, everything is close by, and most areas are connected by buses, free hotel shuttles, and even a light rail. Whether you're coming in by ferry, plane, or crossing over from Hong Kong, Zhuhai, or Shenzhen, you’ll have no problem finding transportation. In this guide, I’ll show you the simplest and most budget-friendly ways to travel around Macau, so you can enjoy your trip without any hassle.

✈️ Macau Airport Transfers

Macau Airport

When you land at Macau International Airport (MFM), getting to your hotel is simple. Whether you're heading to Taipa, Cotai, or the Macau Peninsula, there are several easy ways to travel. Just choose what fits your budget, time, and how much luggage you have.

🚌 Public Bus from the Airport

You’ll find bus stops just outside the arrival area on the lower floor. Buses go to major areas like Taipa, Cotai, Macau Peninsula, ferry terminals, and the border gate.

  • Fare: MOP 6.0 (around PHP 40 or SGD 1.00). Prepare exact coins or use a Macau Pass.
  • Travel Time: About 20 to 30 minutes to Taipa or Cotai. It takes a bit longer to reach the Macau Peninsula.
  • Operating Hours: Most buses run from 6:00 AM until midnight.
  • Tip: Good for solo or light travelers. It can get crowded during peak hours.

🚖 Taxi

Taxi stands are located right outside the airport exit. All taxis are metered, so you pay based on distance.

  • Estimated Cost:
    • Taipa or Cotai hotels: around MOP 30 to 50 (about PHP 200 to 350)
    • Macau Peninsula: around MOP 60 to 100 (about PHP 400 to 700)
  • Travel Time: About 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.
  • Tip: Not all drivers speak English. It helps to show your hotel address in Chinese.

🚗 Hotel Shuttle or Private Car

Many large hotels in Macau offer shuttle buses or private car services. These usually pick you up right at the airport arrivals area.

  • Travel Time: Around 15 to 25 minutes.
  • Cost:
    • Hotel shuttles: Usually free if you’re a guest. Just show your booking.
    • Private cars: More costly than taxis but more comfortable, especially if you have big luggage or are with family.
  • Tip: Some hotel shuttles need to be booked ahead. Double-check with your hotel.

  • Macau International Airport

This is arguably the best value-for-money five-star hotel in Macau. It's even slightly cheaper than the Holiday Inn Express nearby. It's very convenient to get here from both the Qingmao and Gongbei borders, and you can walk to the Ruins of St. Paul's. There are also lots of great food options nearby. Facilities: It's a very standard five-star hotel. The decor style is a bit dated but not run-down. The room soundproofing is excellent. The only downside is they don't provide bottled water. Cleanliness: Very good, the housekeeping is thorough. Environment: Good. Service: Good, the staff are all very enthusiastic, and the front desk staff speak standard Mandarin.

Facilities: The room facilities are new, the mattress is very soft, ensuring a good night's sleep. Hygiene: The room is clean and tidy. Environment: The hotel's swimming pool is a major highlight, with a beautiful and quiet environment. The hotel also has a gym, a heated swimming pool with a constant temperature of 26 degrees Celsius, and a small hot spring pool with massage jets. It's a great place for a relaxing vacation. It's comfortable to swim and soak in the hot springs in any season. Service: Thoughtful and attentive, the staff are polite and responsive. The hotel even upgraded us to a pool-view room for free. I will definitely bring my friends here again next time.

This was my third stay. At check-in, I requested a room overlooking the pool, and the lovely lady at the front desk took a moment to arrange it for me. Thank you. This time, I visited the shop by the pool, and the service and attitude were noticeably different – much improved! The staff were all smiling. Perhaps the previous team has been replaced. Despite a small hiccup during my stay, I'm still giving a perfect score. I feel that the management of this hotel is really dedicated to getting everything right; perhaps some of the lower-level staff haven't quite met those high standards yet. I also tried their spa this time, which was excellent. Overall, a satisfactory stay! 👍

The room was pretty good. Even though the hotel is a bit old, I'd stayed here once before 1999 (when there was no Grand Lisboa or Venetian Macau), and it's clear they've been continuously renovating. They offer a shuttle service from the Gongbei Port to the hotel. The staff were all very enthusiastic, helped with my luggage, and communication was seamless. You can easily walk to famous spots like the Ruins of St. Paul's, St. Dominic's Church, and Senado Square. Margaret's Café e Nata (for egg tarts), Yee Shun Milk Company (for double-skin milk pudding), and Koi Kei Bakery (for local snacks) are all nearby. Plus, casinos like MGM and others offer free milk tea, Coke, Red Bull, coffee, juice, sausage buns, and red bean buns – the rich folks really are generous!

The bedding was quite comfortable, and the TV channels mainly included local Macau stations, Phoenix TV, and Taiwan's CTi Asia. The toiletries were pleasant, and the hotel itself was very clean. Right downstairs, there's a popular photo spot where you can get a great shot with the Grand Lisboa. It's about a 15-minute walk to the Ruins of St. Paul's. When I checked out, someone helped me load my luggage into the taxi that was hailed for me. On the downside, the air conditioning was a bit noisy, likely due to the older facilities. My room also had a small door, probably connecting to the room next door. Although it was locked, the soundproofing wasn't great, and I could hear children from the other side. Considering the price, it offers pretty good value for money (the price on May 5th was half of what it was a few days prior).

Guest rooms are spacious, comfortable, and impeccably clean. The staff are warm and meticulous, offering thoughtful care from check-in to check-out. With a wide variety of dining options and comprehensive shopping and entertainment amenities, it provides guests with a high-quality stay experience. In late May, I took a ferry from Hong Kong's Sheung Wan pier to Macau's Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, then walked 20 minutes to the Rio Hotel. The hotel strictly enforces its 3 PM check-in policy, and there were many guests waiting to check in at that time, so we all had to queue up. The standard room was very spacious (much more so than Hong Kong hotels). I booked the hotel through Trip.com for an average of CNY 450 per night, which included breakfast for two (the breakfast was decent and suited to average tastes). The hotel is very close to Macau's famous landmark, the Ruins of St. Paul's, and is within walking distance. After checking out this morning, I stored my luggage and spent most of the day exploring Taipa. To get back to mainland China via the Gongbei Port, you can hitch a ride on the shuttle bus from the neighboring hotel. I visited Taiwan in 2019, and now that I've explored Hong Kong and Macau, I've checked off all the boxes for my travels!

Our premium sea view room offered a lovely ocean vista – I highly recommend requesting a higher floor. The hygiene was impeccable, making for a very comfortable stay. As for transportation, there are bus stops directly opposite and next to the hotel, covering most of the popular tourist attractions. If you're heading to The Londoner or The Venetian, you can walk just 5 minutes across to Sands Macao to catch their free shuttle bus, which is super convenient. For a hotel on the Macau Peninsula, it offers excellent value for money! Plus, it's only a 3-minute walk straight back from the famous Marco Polo Open Air Plaza.

This was my first stay at the Grand Hyatt Macau, even though I've visited Macau many times. I initially thought getting around would be inconvenient, but after Ms. Lu at the front desk gave me a detailed explanation, I realized it's actually quite convenient. The best part of my stay was the warm and thoughtful service from Ms. Lu. She contacted me the day before check-in, upgraded me to a suite on the day of arrival, and even extended my check-out time because our flight was late the next evening. I'm truly grateful for her help. On the other hand, the breakfast was a complete disappointment. I've stayed at Grand Hyatt hotels in other countries and cities, and the breakfast variety here was far too limited. The desserts and fruits were very ordinary, and don't even get me started on the hot food section – nothing was hot, even right after it was brought out. All in all, the breakfast was terrible, the worst among hotels of the same caliber in Macau.

Overall, we had a great time at Grand Resort Deck, and if you're coming for the water fun, it's a must-visit. However, there are a few details to note: 1. Many people mention that the hotel provides sand toys and water guns. While they do have them, they're in very short supply. I asked several staff members, and they all said they didn't have any. The Macau staff generally have good attitudes, but I'd still recommend bringing your own. 2. The hotel feels a bit 'stingy' compared to expectations. For example, my friend booked with me, and she also had kids, but because she didn't request a tent in advance, they couldn't get one. Also, contrary to what many bloggers said, there were no small gifts for children. For two kids, they only gave one children's bathrobe and wouldn't allow more. We visited after the Qingming Festival, but it still felt like resources were very limited. 3. Breakfast was really subpar. The first time, we went to a cafe for a semi-buffet and thought we'd gone to the wrong place. There wasn't much variety, and the servers kept bringing the wrong dishes, completely mixing up orders. The dining area was small. They called it a semi-buffet, but the à la carte menu only had some Chinese dim sum. Plus, children over 6 were charged extra. My daughter, who is under 1.2 meters, was still questioned. While I understand paying extra for older kids according to policy, the buffet should at least be more abundant. Given the quality, I really regret booking breakfast. Paying over 700 for breakfast for the family in an environment like that in the picture, I'd rather go to the Galaxy mall or order in-room dining. My advice for Chinese breakfast is either to try another hotel in Galaxy or just skip booking it here. 4. The hotel is very close to the automated light rail, which was a pleasant surprise. It's very convenient for taking the cable car, watching the House of Dancing Water show, and enjoying the night views. The kids also loved the light rail, finding it very high-tech.

Mandarin Oriental is one of my favorite brands, so staying here whenever I visit Macau is a must. It truly embodies a rich cultural heritage and understated luxury. From the warmly welcoming doormen dressed in traditional Qing dynasty attire, to the bellhops and front desk staff, everyone was wonderful. A special shoutout to the lovely Ms. Ye, the Front Office Manager, who upgraded us to the best view room, personally wrote a card wishing my child good luck on their exam, and prepared a beautiful, delicious cake (with chocolate frosting bearing a message of good wishes). It was such a delightful and touching surprise! Thank you again! 🌏 Traveling from Macau to Other Cities

One of the best things about visiting Macau is how easy it is to go to nearby cities like Hong Kong, Zhuhai, and Shenzhen. Thanks to its location along the Pearl River Delta, you have several transport options that are fast and simple to use.

🚤 Macau to Hong Kong

Ferry Macau to Hong Kong

Getting from Macau to Hong Kong is very easy. High-speed ferries run often and connect Macau’s Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal and Taipa Ferry Terminal to Sheung Wan on Hong Kong Island and the China Ferry Terminal in Kowloon.

  • Travel time: Around 55 to 70 minutes by ferry
  • Schedule: Ferries leave every 30 to 60 minutes during the day
  • Tip: Book tickets early on weekends or holidays, as they sell out fast

🚶‍♂️ Macau to Zhuhai

Zhuhai Golden Bus

Zhuhai is right next to Macau and is the closest mainland China city. You can easily cross the border either by foot, shuttle bus, or taxi through the Gongbei Border Gate or Lotus Checkpoint.

  • Travel time: Around 10 to 20 minutes depending on the queue
  • Transport options: Shuttle bus, taxi, or walking
  • Tip: Bring your passport and check visa rules for entering mainland China

🚌 Macau to Shenzhen

Ferry Macau to Shenzhen

Shenzhen is a bit farther but still easy to reach. You can take a direct bus or go by ferry to Hong Kong, then transfer to the train going to Shenzhen. Another option is crossing the Gongbei Border and taking a train from Zhuhai.

  • By bus: Around 2 to 3 hours
  • By ferry and train combo: Around 1.5 to 2 hours
  • Tip: The bus is more direct, but the ferry plus train route is more flexible if you also plan to visit Hong Kong
