"The lack of a private toilet in the bedroom is quite uncomfortable. The staff was very helpful and polite. The dinner wasn't very good and the portions quite small. However the onsen are beautiful."

"Exceptional experience from arrival to departure. Everything is perfect in this establishment. The service is of a level rarely achieved. The decoration is both modern and respects traditions. The collective onsens, very little frequented and therefore very pleasant both exterior and interior, are perfectly arranged with views of the forest, river and mountains. The in-room onsen is on a hanging balcony with an even better view. The meals are delicious, particularly copious with well-decorated dishes and exceptional service. It is even possible to order a very good quality continental breakfast. In short, an establishment to recommend and which deserves to return. Congratulations to all the staff. Great success."

"What a surprise. A gem. Spacious room. Small hot bath on the terrace with a view on the river. Initially, looking at the dining room, I thought food would be basic. BUT the set menu was really really good. 10/10. 1 michelin star. A series of small so well presented european dishes with a small touch of Japanese cuisine. Une oeuvre d'art. Excellent. Breakfast, Japanese or European. Excellent too. Staff was great too. We will definitely come back."

"The dinner and breakfast buffets are the best! I was impressed by the luxury of the live kitchen. The French toast and homemade rice balls for breakfast are a must-try! There is free flow, and they also offer a wide range of services such as beer and ice cream after the bath. The staff were very friendly, and I would definitely like to stay here again."

"Feel like home is an old-fashioned ryokan, but the interior looks clean and modern. The owner takes good care of you like you are family. There is a large public bath separated for men and women. The room is large and not cramped. If I come again, I will book here again. Recommended."

Houshi Onsen Chojukan

"An amazing place which naturally loses some points on location, but that’s its uniqueness. The history and Meiji architecture makes it an absolute alternative hotel, with the historical onsens with snow seeping in an absolute heaven. Staff service was impeccably Japanese. Only downside was there being beetle like bugs and spiders all over the onsen with sticky tapes provided in the room for self-capture. Maybe an inevitable situation unfortunately."

"What impressed me most was the excellent breakfast and dinner! I highly recommend staying at this onsen hotel when visiting Gunma. The main dish for dinner was sukiyaki, which was delicious, and each dish was prepared with great care. The food here is really tasty! This time, I stayed in a room with a private open-air onsen bath. The onsen quality here is very high; the spring water isn't heated, allowing you to soak while enjoying the view of Mount Tanigawa. The service was impeccable in every detail, including specially provided pajamas and decaffeinated roasted tea served at night. The next morning, you can also enjoy complimentary coffee while admiring Mount Tanigawa again."

"The place was clean and the hot springs were great, but when we arrived for dinner, which was supposed to start at 6:30 pm, it wasn't ready. We were kept waiting, and even after being seated, it took over 30 minutes for the shabu-shabu pot and meat to arrive... some people waited for an hour. The website showed luxurious tempura and other dishes, but all we got was shabu-shabu, sushi, simmered dishes, and jelly. Breakfast was also disappointing, and this was with two meals included, costing over 10,000 yen per person compared to a room-only stay! And to top it all off, there were only about five staff members, so I wonder how they plan to get through a public holiday... All the staff were foreigners, and their Japanese was broken. It was heartbreaking to see one person working so hard and apologizing. It's such a shame, especially since they said they were trying to make a living by renovating a closed-down inn."

"When there was a test drive event for a new ski model, the inn I usually stay at was full, so I went to Minakami and stayed there for the first time. I just checked the price and went there without doing much research. I thought it would be enough if I could eat and sleep, but the inn was better than I expected. The hot spring in the large bath is free-flowing and circulated, but there is no chlorine, so the water was kept in relatively good condition. The family bath that I was able to bathe in the next morning was free-flowing, so this was definitely a step above. The guest room was open and faced the Tone River. It was nice and spacious. I was impressed that I would get grilled crab for dinner at this price (lol). I guess they can do this because it is an inn run by the Public Servant Mutual Aid Association. The other dishes were also freshly cooked and brought to us each time, and although they were not particularly luxurious, they were all delicious. There was a ski drying room next to the front desk, and although it was far from the ski resort, it was perfect for skiing. If there are any vacant rooms, you can use them even if you are not a public servant, so there is no reason not to use them. However, if you expect the kind of hospitality you would expect from a traditional inn or hotel, you will be disappointed, so it's best to keep that in mind. It wasn't that the staff were rude, but the overall service was more like that of a government office."

"The cost performance was excellent. It included one night stay, two meals, and unlimited alcohol at night. This is my second time using this hotel this term. I was scammed by the student discount though... (bitter smile). The only thing I was a little disappointed about was that the parking lot was full and I had to park in a distant spot, so I wish they had guided me a little better."

"We went with our family. Our growing children were looking forward to their meals and asked for lots of refills, but the staff were very accommodating. There were many manga comics in the lobby, which seemed to be quite popular with elementary and junior high school students. It's understandable considering the rising price of rice, but the rice smelled a bit like it had been left warm, which was disappointing."

"This is my third time staying here this year. I travel to super luxury inns several times a month, but I've never stayed at a hotel where I could enjoy the seasons so well and where the staff are so friendly that I really want to return. The interior of the building is old, but that makes me feel like I'm in the countryside, and it's out of the ordinary and relaxing. I always choose the BBQ plan for dinner, and at night it's cool and I can enjoy a delicious meal while listening to the chirping of insects. The staff at the BBQ area are also very friendly and helpful, and this was another stress-free and happy trip. With the plan that includes a private bath, you can take it twice during peak season and once on other days. This time I went outside of peak season, so I was able to take it once, but I haven't conquered all 11 types of baths here yet, so I added a 40-minute morning bath for 2,000 yen. The temperature is a little warm, so if you like lukewarm water, you can adjust it by cooling it in the shower. I like warm water, so it was just right. Personally, I really love the rock bath on the mountain that you can take until 6pm! The baths make you feel one with nature and help you forget the busyness of everyday life, which is very relaxing. I always feel sad to leave and want to stay another night (laughs). I plan to continue coming back here. When I have children, I want to bring them too."

"The vast grounds are covered with lush moss in the garden. The rooms are made of marble, and the furnishings are thoughtfully designed. The hot spring water is very warming. The food is delicious and locally sourced. The TVs are up-to-date, with access to Amazon and other services. I would like to visit again. However, if I were to offer a criticism, it would be that communication between employees seems to be poor. Also, while there are no basic issues with the facilities, the toilets are hard to lock, and maintenance of aging areas such as the air conditioning may be lacking."

"It was a short walk away from the Minakami Onsen bus stop and the room was clean. Loved the private onset overlooking the river as well. We didn't have breakfast there as the price was a little steep for us (~27 SGD) but there's a nearby bakery and other F&B, so food was not an issue. They provide PJs and a cardigan to put over as well. Staff was nice too."

"We had a wonderful stay at Minakami Kogen and our children keep asking when we can go back! We stayed 4 nights midweek in ski season with a 5 and 8yo. Hotel staff helpful and responsive to emails. Booking the shuttle from Jomo Kogen station was fast and easy. Staff were lovely and helpful in person too, most spoke English and they had translate as well. Connecting corner room was spacious by Japanese standards (we locked the corridor door which gave us a large suitcase space and room to get snow gear on and off). Food (buffet restaurant) was excellent. Lots of variety and each food had clearly marked allergens which made selection easy (we are pescetarian and don't eat meat and there were lots of delicious options). We didn't have problems with availability of early dinner times except on our first day. Both indoor and outdoor onsen were great. We didn't find the walk across the carpark to the outdoor onsen a problem and it was usually very quiet, sometimes we had the bath to ourselves. My children find some onsen too hot, but the outdoor one was perfect because it had two sections, one hotter and one cooler. Snow activities were excellent. We could generally choose an activity, walk up to the desk and book to do it right away. One of the days we bought a lift pass and used the long 500m sled run which was excellent and it was fun to be able to ride the chairlift even though we didn't ski or board. The kids parks were great too, the tubing and sledding was good fun and never crowded. We did the Takaragawa onsen excursion through the hotel and enjoyed it. (Mixed gender, clothed bath along a scenic river). Overall, this hotel far exceeded our expectations and we really enjoyed our stay. Would stay here again."

"I think it's a good place to reset. It's nice that you can drink as much as you want from check-in to check-out. I came by car, so it was a shame that I couldn't drink in the morning. It can't be helped because of the location, but the roads are narrow when you come by car, and the Joetsu Line runs right there, so if you are worried about the sound of freight trains at night, it might be better not to go to the river side. I love trains, so I was very satisfied."

"Stayed overnight at Hoshi Onsen and it was honestly magical. The highlight was soaking in the outdoor bath while snow gently fell around us, super peaceful and almost unreal. The traditional ryokan atmosphere, from the wooden interiors to the quiet surroundings, made it feel like stepping back in time. The onsen itself is beautiful and serene, especially in winter. Service was warm and attentive, and everything felt very authentic and well-preserved. It’s the kind of place where you just slow down and fully relax. Definitely coming back, this is one of those experiences you don’t forget!!"

"I visited this inn for work. The sister inn Senjyuan was really good, so I decided to stay here this time! I wanted to relax by myself, so I booked one with an open-air bath. I made a reservation on the day, but they were flexible in their response. The hospitality was reminiscent of Senjyuan, from the moment I arrived until the time I was shown around. The food was also very satisfying, and made generous use of local ingredients. I really enjoyed this traditional hot spring inn."
