"Staying at Shazhou Wild Luxury Camp in Dunhuang was an amazing experience. Tucked away on the edge of Mingsha Mountain, it offers private access to the vast desert. Unlike the crowded Crescent Lake scenic area, this place is tranquil and relaxing. In the evenings, we played cards in the cool shade of the terrace, watched the sunset, and then the sunrise in the mornings. At night, we could step out anytime to gaze at the starry sky and the Milky Way. It was a truly unique experience, highly recommend!
Just a couple of suggestions:
1. It would be great if you could recommend a few spots and paths for sandboarding. Otherwise, kids with sandboards run around everywhere, and some dunes are too hard to slide down, wasting a lot of energy and time.
2. Could you consider installing a rope ladder to the highest dune, similar to Crescent Lake? It would make climbing much easier. Otherwise, the women and children in our group couldn't make it up, which was a shame given the beautiful views."

"We had a wonderful stay at WanAn Inn! The rooms were spacious, clean and elegantly designed. There was also a lovely cafe/restaurant attached which was great for a morning coffee. The staff were lovely and super attentive! The location was excellent—really well situated for visits to the Mogao caves, and only a 5 minute drive from the crescent lake and desert. Would really recommend staying here!"

Located just outside of town, this hotel has a large range of rooms from standard to suites and villas.A little inconvenient for travelers interested in spending most of their time in downtown Dunhuang, the hotel does have plenty of amenities and entertainment rooms to keep their guests entertained. There is a shuttle bus that runs to and from town.
"My wife and I just stayed at the Dunhuang Hotel. We were incredibly impressed by the beautiful architecture, excellent service, and profound cultural heritage of this place.
The hotel boasts an exceptional location near Mingsha Mountain, offering panoramic desert views from its upper floors. The entire establishment resembles a desert castle, standing majestically amidst the vast Gobi Desert, overlooking the ancient Silk Road.
In the lobby, three colossal murals depict themes of the Silk Road: its people, treasures, and architecture. These murals, soaring three stories high, transport guests through ancient history, creating a truly awe-inspiring experience.
The hotel's Chinese restaurant is grand, designed in the style of a traditional three-courtyard mansion. Every brick and tile, every intricate eave, exudes a Han and Tang dynasty grandeur. Yet, the wooden beaded curtains at the entrance, the exotic carpets, and various decorative details remind you that this is the empire's frontier, a vital gateway to the Western Regions. As dusk falls, red lanterns beneath the eaves and landscape lights on the lawn illuminate the castle-like rammed earth walls, casting a warm, reddish glow. The distant blue sky and tranquil desert beautifully complement each other, forming a serene and picturesque scene where beauty can be found at almost every turn.
The guest rooms are equally distinctive, seemingly a fusion of Central Plain and Western Regions cultures. Most of the furniture is Chinese in style: the grand chairs, round tables and stools, stacked cabinets, and the bird-and-flower paintings on the walls all evoke an antique charm. Upon closer inspection, almost all tabletops are covered with brightly colored, exotic-style tablecloths, and large areas of the floor are laid with thick, soft, and comfortable Bohemian carpets. The lighting fixtures also often have a Western Regions flair, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, as if you've entered a nomad's home. It's worth noting that the bedside and floor lamps are adorned with frescoes of the flying apsaras from the Mogao Grottoes, a testament to the cultural richness embedded in every detail.
Each room also provides a collection of books for guests to read, including the 'Dunhuang City Chronicles,' stories of the Mogao Grottoes frescoes, and the handwritten notes of the late founder, Mr. Wang Mangang. These notes recount his challenging experience of investing in and building the hotel in Dunhuang during the early days of reform and opening up in 1993, inspiring a deeper understanding and respect for this hotel.

"The night market is super close, which was really convenient. They even gave us a thoughtful little gift (a sand cover) – I was just about to go buy one myself! The staff also recommended some great places to eat, and we ended up going back to one of them two days in a row. The only minor issue was the light above the sink; it kept turning off on a timer, which was really annoying when I was trying to do my makeup and suddenly it went dark. We'd have to call out to get it to turn back on. It was quite frustrating, and I'd suggest they fix it."

"This hotel truly lives up to its reputation as the 'Haidilao of hotels'! The service is exceptional. It was the only hotel during my Hexi Corridor trip that delivered my luggage to the room and explained all the room's features – a service I usually only expect from luxury hotels. The lobby is pet-friendly, with cats and dogs roaming around. My room had a humidifier and a foot spa, and the upgraded room even came with a treadmill! The breakfast was great; we left early every day, and breakfast was ready by 6:40 AM. From 9 PM to 11 PM, they also offer complimentary congee, cold dishes, and steamed buns. Each guest received a free bowl of delicious noodles during their stay. Ordering takeout to the hotel was also convenient. Although it's not a luxury hotel, the service left a lasting impression. No wonder so many families with children choose to stay here; we even saw a study tour group! I stayed here for 3 nights, and they were the best 3 nights of sleep I had on this Hexi Corridor trip. There are washing machines and drying racks on the 6th floor, and the room also had a place to hang clothes."

The camp site is excellent, the view is super wide, there is no building block, it is a great place to watch the desert scenery. The sunset in the evening is really amazing. Watching the sunset sink a little into the dunes, the whole yellow sand is plated with warm orange halo, the light and shadow layer upon layer, the atmosphere is directly full, and the shot is a large texture. Wait until night falls, the advantage of being away from the city light pollution is completely highlighted, the night sky is clean and transparent, the sky is full of stars, the Milky Way is clearly visible, lying on the bed can immersive look up at the Galaxy, romantic to the extreme. "The staff and volunteers were all great! I am truly impressed by how helpful they were. I think the young boss should take credit for this - staff seems to have autonomy to make decisions and therefore were confident and sure of what they could offer.
My two favourite persons from the hostel in the pictures : ) But this morning there were another staff and a volunteer who really went out of their way to consider and advise two travellers regarding hitchhiking.
I wasn't disturbed by the smell of the camels. Location wise, it's really convenient to visit the oasis and sand dunes. Downside : food in the area is limited in choice and quite costly. Plus: it's really not that far from the city. There's a bus #3 that takes you for ¥2 to the city and back. Didi rides are also mostly under ¥10 to the city."

The hotel has a total of many guest rooms, including exclusive art boutique suites, Grand Hyatt Happy Family Suites, parent-child rooms, single rooms, and standard rooms; it can meet the accommodation needs of all kinds of tourists. "The newly renovated room was incredibly stylish. The desk and partition were integrated seamlessly, and the sink, bathtub, and toilet were all separated, providing excellent privacy. I particularly loved the washbasin's unique material – water drops created a lovely chime. A room of this size in Japan could easily be two separate units! The mini-fridge was very handy for storing food, which was a lifesaver for our early 8:45 AM slot at the Mogao Grottoes Digital Center. The outer walls were 48 bricks thick, providing great earthquake resistance and insulation. They also had all the amenities, including a smoke escape mask, razor, and bath liner. The pick-up and drop-off service was an added bonus. The 9th-floor restaurant terrace offered fantastic views.
A special shout-out to Xiaodai, who arranged our airport pick-up. After booking our flights and hotel on Ctrip, I confirmed the pick-up with the hotel. On April 2nd, flying from Chengdu to Lanzhou, then Lanzhou to Dunhuang (with a stopover in Jiayuguan), our flight was delayed three times due to strong winds. Xiaodai kept in constant communication with me, even confirming again when we were pushed back and taxing in Jiayuguan. We finally arrived 4 hours late. The moment I turned on my phone after landing, I received a message from driver Mr. Wu, who picked us up smoothly and got us to the hotel. Following Xiaodai's advice, we left at 7:50 AM for the Mogao Grottoes Digital Center, making it to the 8:45 AM first show. We then successfully got tickets for our desired special grottoes and visited all the open areas of the Mogao Grottoes.
On April 4th, I went to the front desk to ask about the bus to the airport and happened to find Xiaodai on duty. She told me they could arrange a drop-off. When I gave her my room number, she recognized me from our earlier pick-up arrangements. My interactions with Xiaodai showed me the hotel's excellent service, with attention to every single detail. If 10 is the highest score, I'd give them a 12. Dunhuang is a place you'll want to visit more than once or twice."

Guest UserOut of our 9-day trip along the Qinghai-Gansu Loop, this homestay was our family's absolute favorite. It's a place with real heart and soul, where every detail is thoughtfully considered. Even our five-year-old said he'd give this hotel 30 stars!
The homestay has a great design aesthetic, and the rooms are spotless, perfectly matching the tastes and ideas of younger travelers. We always bring our own disposable toiletries when we travel, but here, everything was already provided in the room.
I also really loved the landlady – she's just one of those people you instantly like, and it was so comfortable interacting with her. From the moment we checked into the homestay in Dunhuang, we had such a positive impression of the city. Even though our stay was brief, it's full of beautiful memories.
When we were leaving, she found out my child liked apricots and even gave him some from her own yard, which was incredibly touching.
The breakfast offered a wide variety, and it was all very enjoyable.
I truly recommend this homestay if you're coming to Dunhuang. I hope everyone gets to experience the genuine warmth and hospitality during their travels here.

This guesthouse is truly unique! Each room is named after one of the twelve zodiac signs, with designs that blend local flair and astrological elements. In the evenings, you can go stargazing, with options for an indoor lecture and actual observation from the rooftop. The instructor mentioned that summer is the best season for stargazing, and if you want to spot your own zodiac constellation, it's best to visit around two months before or after its designated month. They even gave us wishing bottles for our own zodiac signs, which we filled with sand from Mingsha Mountain the next day to take home!
The host is incredibly warm and helpful; you can ask her about local tourism, car rentals, and more – she's very considerate. Breakfast is different every day, with a thoughtful and nutritious selection. There's also an adorable cat who loves to 'accompany' you during meals, often sitting on a chair. She gets so happy if you share half an egg yolk with her every morning! She also recently had three tiny, adorable kittens!
The guesthouse features a classroom and a spacious, bright lobby, making it feel especially suitable for study tour groups. We initially planned to stay two nights but loved it so much we extended for another night. The village atmosphere is quiet and comfortable, and it's about a 15-minute taxi ride to Shazhou Night Market and around 20 minutes to the train station, so transportation is very convenient.
Highly recommend for family trips and educational tours!

We are impressed with the hotel. Whatever we write, it will still be not enough, because it is a real jewel in every aspect. The room was luxuriously furnished and extremely cozy. Inside there is everything you need for a perfect and comfortable stay and rest. Even the smallest details, both functional and aesthetic, have been considered. There were snacks and water in the room as a compliment from the hotel. On the 5th floor there is a self-service laundry room and dryer available to guests. The cleanliness is perfect. The breakfast is rich and has both European and Asian offerings. The location is very convenient. There are many restaurants nearby, and the beautiful central part is also within walking distance. We are grateful to the entire staff for the excellent service and kind attitude. Every single person of the team does his job perfectly well. The only thing we regret is that we did not have more time to enjoy this wonderful place. We wish the entire team health and good luck. Always be so kind and keep this high level service.

I cannot recommend this exquisite home stay highly enough! My five-day visit was nothing short of perfection, from the moment I arrived until my warm departure.
As a female solo traveler from abroad, safety and welcome are my top priorities, and this family went above and beyond to make me feel like part of their home. My journey began with a incredibly gracious complimentary pick-up from Dunhuang airport, which immediately eased any travel fatigue.
The hospitality only blossomed from there. The host family provided me with such genuine individual attention, offering personalized advice for visiting the breathtaking Crescent Moon Lake and the awe-inspiring Mogao Grottoes. Their tips were invaluable and helped me experience these wonders to the fullest.
Now, the food! Each meal was a delight—authentic, home-cooked, and prepared fresh with so much care. It was truly delicious and gave me a real taste of local cuisine.
My room was a haven of comfort and cleanliness, kept absolutely spotless throughout my stay. A wonderful daily touch was the replenishment of complimentary beverages: refreshing peach tea, pure water, and delicious coconut water—perfect after a day of exploring the desert.

There were a lot of people in the hotel lobby on the night of check-in. The front desk said that they had received a study tour group of 500 people, which delayed the check-in time. To express their apology, the front desk gave me some souvenirs and promised to take me to the night market in the evening. They were really sincere and I could see that the service awareness came from the heart and was not forced through training.

I chose this hotel for my trip, and the room was thoughtfully furnished. The twin beds were very spacious, and two adults could comfortably stay in one room. The bedding was clean, pure white, soft and gentle on the skin, and provided just the right amount of support. After a long day of business travel, I could fall asleep immediately. There was also a lounge chair by the window, perfect for relaxing in the afternoon sun or enjoying a cup of tea. Cleanliness was impeccable. The sheets and duvet covers were spotless and odorless, the floors and surfaces were impeccably clean, and the bathroom was spotless and tidy, giving me peace of mind. The staff were also very attentive, checking me in quickly and patiently answering any questions. Overall, the service was excellent, making me feel very comfortable.

The owner will take you to a small path, which takes less than ten minutes to reach the scenic area, which is especially convenient for watching the sunrise and sunset. FaliangwangzhegirlThis stay was absolutely delightful! I was initially worried about the location being a bit out of the way, so I only booked one night. To my surprise, getting a taxi on the first night was super easy, so we extended our stay. While there aren't other guesthouses right around ours, we noticed a whole street full of guesthouses nearby, which seemed crowded and noisy. At night, lying in bed, you can hear the wind brushing against the walls, but it's not loud; it actually feels like being in harmony with nature. My husband and I also went gold panning – if you find gold coins, you can exchange them for prizes. We went enthusiastically, expecting a small sandbox like in a park, but it was a massive area!
**Mingsha Mountain View Afternoon Tea:** The chilled apricot peel tea was delicious.
**Fengmingsha Desert Restaurant - 30% off coupon for set meals:** After we landed, the butler collected our luggage and told us hotpot was ready, just waiting for us to freshen up and eat. The lamb wasn't ***** at all, and the dipping sauce was really tasty.

The hotel facilities are exceptionally complete. The entire room was clean and tidy, with a full range of toiletries and stable water pressure in the shower. The air conditioning worked very well, and all the furniture and appliances were provided. It was a comfortable and hassle-free stay, an absolutely fantastic experience.

The boss was very enthusiastic. I contacted him one day in advance and waited for us at the station early the next morning. The accommodation was close to the East Gate. We said we were going to Crescent Lake and Mingsha Mountain. The boss took the initiative to drive us to the Middle Gate, saying that we could save 20 yuan on the shuttle bus fare. The next day, we signed up for a tour group to go out and play. The boss also sent us to the boarding point early in the morning.
