"It was a retro inn, located a little way from the Motoyu hot springs of Ryujin Onsen, and it didn't even have an elevator. 🤗 Even though I couldn't stay alone at Kamigoten or other places, they warmly welcomed me as a solo traveler. 😌💓 The hostess is originally from Sajima, Kamijima Town, Ehime Prefecture, where I live, and she has friends on Iwaki Island, where I also live. Perhaps because it was a weekday, the place was all to myself. 🤗 They prepared a bath and meal just for me, which was such a luxurious and appreciated experience. 😊 Afterwards, I was able to visit the Kumano Sanzan shrines in a pleasant atmosphere. Thank you so much. 🤗"

"The room was very clean. The landlady was kind and could communicate in Chinese using a translation software. I ordered her breakfast for 800 yen and it was very comfortable. I didn’t know what to choose from the meal. I just ate what she made and I was very satisfied. This B&B can pick you up from the station. I don’t speak Japanese, so I can only walk there. When I left, she drove me to the station. I liked it very much! The bus runs twice a day, and it’s difficult to take a taxi. The pick-up and drop-off is very pleasant."

"A great place if you’re open to cooking some food yourself. Yes, the dinner options are basically non-existent, but that really doesn’t matter if you’re open minded and willing to do something yourself. My partner and I walked for 8 hours and were exhausted when we arrived, but we still decided to get some food from the shop across the road (very nearby!!) and cook. It ended up being a lovely way to end the day which also surprised us. We sat atop our container-home and looked to the mountains as we ate our food. The room has everything you need other than knives and maybe more options for plates, but it’s doable. Everything is compact but that’s part of the charm, and it’s really quite incredible how they organise the entire room. The only issues we encountered were the lack of knives (only one chef’s knife, no normal knives for spreading butter etc), and the plates, but no other issues. The lack of staff to talk to face to face can be a bit of a shock to people, but it’s all about your own attitude to trying it out, as this isn’t a hotel where you can get anything you want just by asking. You can ask, but it’s all done via a couple of iPads. Just be prepared and keep an open mind. If you do that, this might be one of the most comfortable and personal stays you’ll have."

"Nice little family run Japanese inn. Owner is a lady over 80 years old who still manages the hotel and greets all the guests like they are family. Traditional clean and comfortable tatami rooms which they set up for sleeping while you are at dinner. The wooden onsen is not very big but nice and hot and has a big picture window looking out on trees. Good hearty locally sourced food, very filling unlike some other multi course Japanese meals. Very friendly staff who seem genuinely happy when you try greeting them in in however much Japanese you've learned."

"A great choice for your first night on the Kumano Kodo trail. Check-in is as simple as scanning a QR code and using a password, so you don't need to interact with anyone. Even your meals are placed in your room before check-in. The environment is very simple, with a shower in the outdoor courtyard and a toilet in the room. Best of all, there's free beer, and all the drinks in the refrigerator are free, including any drinks you can't finish."

I have large tattoos, but they allowed me to use both the public and private onsen."

"The facilities and cleanliness were excellent, but because it's so new, there was still a strong smell of renovation. I had emailed ahead to inform them I'd be arriving late, and received a reply saying it was absolutely fine. However, upon arrival, the front desk was completely unstaffed, there were insects everywhere, and no code was provided to open the door to the self-service counter. Eventually, the Trip.com customer service actively contacted staff, and after waiting 25 minutes, I finally got the code for the front desk door. Only then could I self-check-in and get the room code. There was no other assistance throughout the whole process. I genuinely don't recommend this place for late arrivals."
