Quite difficult to find this hotel and a few more signs would be helpful. Having said that we were pleasantly welcomed and shown the way to the Brasserie. Bev, the lady in charge, showed us to our seats and we arranged to have 2 mock tails instead of the Prosecco. No problem with this. The sandwiches, cakes and scones arrived promptly and were very freshly made. The scones were light and fluffy. Bev made a very good job of running the dining room which was very busy considering it was a Wednesday lunchtime. Highly recommend and would visit again.
First thing I noticed was the excellent friendly service at the front counter. This service continued at breakfast the next morning, which was very nice - it was a menu-style breakfast where you order a breakfast you would like. Breakfast with salmon had a small supplement.
The room was mostly okay, although there were some stains on the bedsheet. Inclusion of earplugs was a nice touch as it is on the main road - I happen to like the city noise, but ended up using them to block out the noise of the fan (there is no air conditioning).
The bathroom had nice toiletries although we noticed that the cold tap ran hot for quite a while before it got cold.
Overall the stay was fine, but with lots of hotels available in Colchester it wouldn’t be my first pick to return.
The hotel is very njice a reward.

The hotel is small, simple, there is a bus stop at the door, and it is very close to the town center. It is very convenient to walk to the town. The English breakfast is very good (the chef is an older woman, one looks at the restaurant, likes her). While eating and looking through the floor-to-ceiling windows, I feel quiet.

Lovely 14th century hotel, staffed by excellent friendly, helpful staff. Added bonus of free parking. Our breakfasts were included and were some of best we've had. The full breakfast is cooked to order and comes out piping hot. Much better than a hot buffet. Staff happy to accommodate personal preferences, example I dont like crispy bacon, and my 'soft' bacon was perfect. Yasmin was a delight, first thing in morning, cheerful, helpful and inflammable. Rowen was the perfect reception staff to greet new arrivals during the day. The young lady on reception in evenings was also lovely, friendly and helpful. Unfortunately we didn't notice her name. Rooms clean and comfortable, nice to find a fan, as it was rather warm during our stay. The complementary cookies on reception were a nice touch and tasty. It's a good 15minute uphill walk into city centre, which some people may find d a struggle, but there does seem to be plenty of buses running both ways.

How delightful to be given an upgrade to a suite. Having checked in it was off for an evening with many old friends. On returning sometime after 10.30 we thought ordering from the late night room service menu would be a good idea. The gentleman who answered the phone went off to check with the kitchen as to which options were available, a curious event in itself. On calling us back we were told that not a single food option was available other than some cheese for sandwiches which ”wouldn't come up nice” whatever that may mean. We were offered the choice of buying packets of crisps from the bar or ordering food elsewhere that they would accept at reception for us to collect. What an absolute joke, amateur hour hospitality at it's appalling worst and at a premium price point too. Whether the fault lies with poor recruitment, training, supervision, management or all four is a question that needs answering before anybody reading this review considers staying in this venue. So now it's morning, the temperature in our room is unpleasantly cool. No problem, we turn on the heat pump. It's great at moving air but no heat is to be had, it's cold in here and now we're both sick of the place and just want to leave. The instructions for the heating are badly photocopied and somebody has used the paper to make notes on but nobody has spotted that either. Its nice and warm in the rest of the suite though so we prepare for the day in there. Mustn't forget that we've already struggled twice this morning with the toilet that flushes continuously until you push the buttons in the special way that stops it. The staff told us to do this last night. Ok if you know you have this problem why not do something about it and repair or replace the worn or faulty parts? I've genuinely enjoyed much better standards in the humble Travelodge. Greyfriars from where I sit right is just a poor joke. Breakfast was good, our suite was beautiful, in fact the whole hotel is beautiful. But when you go to bed hungry and wake up cold these things lose their charm
GGuest UserGood points- Lisa front of house team is a wonderful asset to you, together with the two ladies from the restaurant (sorry didn't get your names). Bad points - outweigh the good sadly. Room was filthy, sheets had the appearance of been slept in and had blood on them. The sofa bed which wasn't made up when we arrived (quickly sorted by Lisa) the mattress protector was soiled. Given these couple of things we glanced at the floor to find that the carpet hadn't seen a vacuum for a while and the previous guests had obviously enjoyed some bombay mix and a couple of chocolate bars as their bits and wrappers were left by the bed. Note this wasn't UNDER the bed, we weren't brave enough for that it was simply next to it. It also appeared the previous guests had made off with the shower gel and spoons. To top off our frightful stay where the dirty linen from all the rooms had been thrown down the stairs the following day we were welcomed by a cockroach scuttling off for it's meal, we nearly stopped it to tell it our room number if it fancied a snack on the carpet buffet in our room. We were promised the room would be deep cleaned the following day and yes the sheets were clean and towels fab but the carpet obviously was a bit too hard for them. To say holiday inn pride themselves on their cleanliness is beyond a joke. It made our stay there very unpleasant and stressful. We were not offered another room as they were fully booked.
GGuest UserAbsolutely wonderful hotel all round. The room and balcony exceeded my expectations, and really pleased me, and my standards are very high and I submitted some specific requests. Top floor, room 904, advised now this one and 910 very popular. Both the room and balcony a really nice size too. Lovely facilities. Nice view of Colchester castle etc. Nice communal areas. The George hotel communal areas are wonderful too and lovely breakfast, great choice, beautifully cooked, and I requested to sit elsewhere as so many beautiful options, and for me generally and as need my own space, and peace as much as possible, and am still very aware re.COVID-19, I eventually arranged to sit in the lovely courtyard. Too busy and noisy for me in the main restaurant. Exemplary staff. I also really liked the fact that you could switch the bathroom ventilator off, otherwise it comes on when you put the light on. Of course one should always switch it on when using the shower and keep it on briefly afterwards. My first Surya experience. Sublime.
DdaveashukJust off A12 to the side of the Shell service station on south bound carriage way, you will find free parking slots, but mainly full of vans in the week. Check in was good, the open window in the room didn’t disguise the fact the room had been smoked in. Fairly standard room with no bath, but the bed was softish and narrow for comparable hotels. The breakfast was the standard, but the staff topped up food regularly and cleaned up tables as people left. Due to its location the room rate was reasonable, being 10-15 minutes from the Colchester park and ride.
GGuest UserAttended a relative’s birthday celebration here in the function room, staying overnight in one of the rooms above. From the moment we arrived in the afternoon and checked in we could not fault a thing. We had a few drinks in the restaurant area and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. The party was a real success with plenty of exquisite buffet food . The room had its own bar and the staff were brilliant. Our bedroom and en-suite were a good size, clean and in good condition. The bed was very comfortable and considering the restaurant is situated on a busy road, had a brilliant night’s sleep. The full English breakfast the next morning was again excellent and the service was great. Highly recommend
GGuest UserWe stayed for just one night as we were having a school reunion nearby, so we didn't try the restaurant. We didn't have hreakfast either, so can't comment on it. The location is easy to find - just off the A12. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Rooms were clean and the bed was comfy. Easy car parking. Exactly what we required.
Absolutely loved the room, bathroom was gorgeous, big tv, bed was comfy, AC was great and even had a fridge The toilet seat didn't fit the toilet correctly, mentioned it to reception who said they will look into it The shower was amazing, in fact I didn't want to get out of it. We went down for dinner on the Saturday night and this is where it let us down a bit. The food was lovely however when I went up to the bar to order the lady both times looked at her watch and said that the kitchen closes at 8.30pm. I went up both times way before them. To be honest I felt like I was an inconvenience. There was a party on and it felt like we wasn't as important as them so felt a bit uncomfortable. Breakfast the next morning was fantastic- plenty of choice. Left feeling full up. Didn't use the leisure facilities but did go for a look, gym looked good as did the pool (Pity there wasn't a jacuzzi but not a deal breaker). Plan on returning so will use the pool and gym then.
GGuest UserGreat hotel with a lot of history to it, and as such a very nice place to stay at. Friendly and approachable staff. Unfortunately, I had booked two rooms without adequate facilities; one room did not have hot water and the other had a malfunctioning shower. Could have been bad luck, and I suspect the hotel management to be able to fix this issue.
