Haikou Urban Rail and High-Speed Train

Haikou High-Speed Train

Haikou does not have a subway-style metro system. Instead, the city uses urban rail services and the Hainan Island high-speed railway to connect the airport, major stations, and nearby cities. The trains are clean, air-conditioned, and easy to use, making them a convenient option for first-time visitors, especially if your hotel is near a railway station.

🛤️ Key Stations in Haikou

Some of the most useful railway stations for travelers include:

Haikou East Railway Station

  • Main high-speed rail hub in the city
  • Convenient for travel to Sanya, Wenchang, and other cities in Hainan

Haikou Meilan International Airport

  • Direct railway access inside the airport
  • Easy connection between the airport and city stations

Haikou Railway Station

  • Serves some long-distance and cross-strait routes
  • Useful for ferry-linked rail travel to mainland China

If your accommodation is close to any of these stations, the train can save time and avoid road traffic.

⏱️ Operating Hours and Frequency

  • Trains generally run from early morning until late evening
  • Frequency varies by route, usually every 10 to 20 minutes for busy sections
  • Schedules may change slightly on public holidays

You usually won’t need to wait long, especially during the day.

💳 Tickets and Payment

  • Short trips within Haikou: around ¥10–20
  • Intercity trips within Hainan: higher, based on destination
  • Buy tickets at station counters, ticket machines, or official railway apps
  • Payment accepted: cash (CNY), Alipay, WeChat Pay

⚠️ Things to Note

  • This is not a full metro network, so stations are spaced farther apart than subways in larger cities
  • You may need a short taxi or bus ride from the station to your hotel
  • Last trains usually run before midnight, so late-night travel may require a taxi
🎉 Pro Tip: Riding the bullet train? Check our quick guide on the China High-Speed Train for booking tips, routes, and smooth travel.

The hotel facilities are quite new and the hygiene is well-maintained. I particularly liked the design of the bathroom and walk-in closet; it's spacious and has a great wet/dry separation. The breakfast selection was decent, with most essential items available. If you go early, it's less crowded and the staff are very prompt with their service. Even if it gets busy later, they proactively help you find a seat, so there's no issue of fighting for tables. However, there was a small hiccup. Around 10 AM, while I was still sleeping, a staff member repeatedly knocked and rang the doorbell, saying they wanted to clean the room, which woke me up. After complaining to guest services, they offered to send a fruit platter, but since I was about to leave, I declined. What's unbelievable is that when I returned to my room in the evening, I found that the room hadn't been cleaned at all.

The facilities are decent, but I'm deducting points for two things. First, as shown in picture 1, a staff member told me I needed a swimming cap after I got into the pool, which I completely understand. I immediately left the main pool and played with my child in the kiddie pool. However, half an hour later, a group of people arrived, and two men among them were happily playing in the pool without swimming caps. The staff member was right there but didn't say anything. What's the deal? Double standards? Second, after checking out and about to get into my booked Didi, the front desk stopped me, saying my room payment had been mysteriously refunded and I needed to pay again. Although their attitude was good, why did it take three days, and they only noticed it when I was checking out? Luckily, my Didi driver was very nice and patiently waited a few minutes.

The room facilities are complete; although they look a bit dated, they are very well maintained and don't affect the user experience at all. The cleanliness is also excellent, with both public areas and rooms meeting five-star standards. The environment speaks for itself – it's a 2-minute walk to the coastline with soft, fine sand, and there are recreational activities available on the beach. While the sea color isn't as crystal clear as in Sanya, it doesn't detract from the beach experience. The service is also very attentive; whether it's check-in, the pool, or dining, the experience is great. Guests even get a butler who adds them on WeChat to provide service, always responsive to requests. Overall, I highly recommend staying here when in Haikou.

I have to say, this trip was truly unforgettable. Putting everything else aside, I was assigned a room incredibly far away. Then, I had a free seafood porridge with Zao Po Cu sauce from the hotel for dinner at 5:30 PM. I didn't sleep a wink that night due to severe diarrhea, to the point of dehydration. I even suspected ****. If I hadn't had to rush back to the office for a meeting the next day, I honestly would have needed to go to the hospital... I couldn't even move on the plane because of the stomach pain. The hotel manager explained that it was because it was my first time having Zao Po Cu and it could be irritating. But I went to Sanya in July and had Zao Po Cu hot pot and had no issues whatsoever. This was truly memorable. If I had kept the ## proof, I would really go back and argue with the hotel, but never mind. Anyway, for those who want to experience diarrhea and vomiting, I recommend it!

Our family stayed at the hotel, and our butler, Fiona, provided exceptionally attentive and thoughtful service. She proactively contacted us even before check-in to meticulously arrange everything, including helping us upgrade our room type and offering complimentary breakfast. During our stay, she continuously followed up, always checking on our comfort, and was very quick to respond to any requests. The hotel boasts an excellent sea view with a wide vista and outstanding scenery. The children's swimming pool has plenty of shade, so it's mostly protected from the sun during the day, which deserves high praise. The adult swimming pool is huge, the water is crystal clear, and it's not crowded, making for a fantastic swimming experience. The hotel also organized children's activities in both the morning and afternoon, which the kids absolutely loved. With the thoughtful butler service and beautiful sea views, we were very satisfied with our stay this trip.

Staying at the Haikou State Guesthouse this trip was beyond my expectations! Especially the service attitude of the hotel staff – they proactively upgraded my room, which was fantastic. And Xiao Meng at the front desk made my stay very pleasant. It was also very clean, though the facilities are a bit old, given how long the hotel has been open. I was initially worried after seeing so many negative reviews, but it turns out my concerns were completely unfounded! I highly recommend staying here! Service: They upgraded my room upon check-in, and I could watch planes take off right from my window – a truly unique experience. As for airplane noise, I didn't notice any at all. Dining is also very convenient; you can directly access the mini-outlet mall through the hotel's private passage. We ate very well for around 50 per person. Getting to the airport is also a breeze. We were going to T2, and the hotel shuttle took us directly there in just 5 minutes from downstairs. The gym wasn't crowded, and the facilities looked quite new. There seems to be a laundry room on every floor, which is very convenient.

This summer, I took my family and kids on a trip along the eastern coast of Hainan, starting from Beijing. Our first stop was Haikou. After comparing several hotels, we chose Pullman. We initially planned to visit Qilou Old Street, but due to the rain, we drove directly from the airport to the hotel with our rental car. The front desk staff were warm, polite, and answered all our questions. Although the hotel's exterior and room facilities aren't brand new, the river view from the window was beautiful, and the courtyard was lush green. Eating breakfast while surrounded by the tropical greenery was very pleasant. The buffet breakfast offered a wide variety of dishes and drinks, all to our liking. While not perfect, I would still consider staying at the Pullman again on my next visit to Haikou.

I was planning a two-day weekend getaway in Haikou and wanted to pick a five-star hotel with an executive lounge. After much deliberation, I chose The Langham. However, upon arrival, I found out the lounge was under renovation and service was moved to the lobby bar. Nobody informed me of this when I made the reservation. Trip.com's solution was for me to cancel my executive seaview room and rebook a basic city view room with breakfast, while still keeping my original seaview room. I accepted this. What I liked: The high floor offers unbeatable sea views, the cleanliness was excellent, soundproofing was great, the bedding was very comfortable, and breakfast was also good. Areas for improvement: No butler proactively contacted me. The room's furniture layout was a bit odd; the cabinet placed alone in the middle of the room felt out of place. The coffee provided was drip coffee, so I couldn't figure out the purpose of the French press. The overall hotel style is suitable for women and leans towards business travelers.

The location is excellent; downstairs is a walking park with a view of Century Bridge 🌉. It's also quite close to Yundong Academy. The swimming pool offers great views while you swim. We received a complimentary baby food item, which the restaurant swapped for a delicious steamed egg with minced meat and mushrooms, and my little brother ate a lot of it. Our anniversary stay at the Ritz-Carlton Haikou was fantastic! Having our butler, Winni, made the experience even more comfortable. She was incredibly attentive and thoughtful throughout our entire stay. The room decorations were so meticulously done and exceeded my expectations; my girlfriend absolutely loved them! The complimentary small gifts and custom room key cards were also very exquisite. Breakfast was English style, and they helped us with drink arrangements. This is a four-star hotel, and admittedly, some of the facilities are a bit old. When I arrived in Haikou, it had just rained, and there was a musty smell in the room and corridors, which was a bit off-putting. However, everything else was quite good. What stood out was that the shower water was natural hot spring water, and you could even enjoy the hot springs from 2 PM to 10 PM daily. Wuzhizhou Island

Sanya is a famous beach city in the south of Hainan Island. It is a popular weekend destination with beautiful beaches, resorts, and seafood.

  • By high-speed train: About 1.5 to 2 hours from Haikou East Railway Station
  • Trains run often from early morning until evening
  • Tip: Book a window seat to enjoy the scenic views along the coast

🚌 Haikou to Wenchang

Shitou (Boulder) Park

Wenchang is a smaller city northeast of Haikou known for its Hainanese chicken rice and space launch center.

  • By train: About 30 to 40 minutes
  • By bus or car: Around 1 to 1.5 hours
  • Tip: Try the local-style chicken rice in the city center for a food trip

🛳️ Haikou to Mainland China (via ferry or train)
