Disappointing Experience at The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai I stayed at The Ritz-Carlton Shanghai for two nights, and unfortunately, my experience was far from the luxury service I expected. 1. Discrimination at Flair Rooftop Restaurant On my first night, I visited Flair, the hotel's rooftop restaurant. Before going, I was told at the lobby that the restaurant operates on a first-come, first-served basis, with no reservations. However, when I arrived at around 5:50 PM, the restaurant was only 20% occupied, yet the host told me it was ”fully booked.” Then, the host questioned my intent, asking whether I was there for drinks or dinner. When I said ”dinner,” he suddenly mentioned a 1,600-yuan minimum spending requirement. I agreed without hesitation and ended up spending over 2,200 yuan. But what truly bothered me was the initial rejection and the selective enforcement of the minimum charge, implying that I was being judged based on my appearance or nationality. If the restaurant was truly full, why was I offered a table once I confirmed I would spend a significant amount? 2. Misleading Room Upgrade Offer & Hidden Promotions When I checked in, I had already booked a suite with a city view for around 4,000 yuan. However, the receptionist tried to upsell me a Pearl Tower view for an additional 3,300 yuan, which is an unreasonable price just for a different view. What’s worse is that she failed to inform me about an existing hotel promotion: (cant remember the amount exactly) If I pre-purchased 1,000 yuan, I could use 1,400 yuan at Flair rooftop restaurant. I only found out about this the next day and when I asked whether I could retroactively apply this promotion to my bill (which was charged to my room), I was told it was not possible because I had to buy the package in advance. Had I known about this offer beforehand, I would have gladly used it. Instead, the staff prioritized upselling me a more expensive view rather than informing me of real benefits available to hotel guests. 3. Concierge Service & Taxi Nightmare The service at the concierge was another major disappointment. I had a reservation at a Chinese restaurant across the river and asked the concierge to arrange a taxi for me. Knowing that taxis in Shanghai can be unreliable and tricky (as I had experienced the night before with an airport taxi taking me to three wrong hotels and turning off the meter), I was relieved when the concierge used Didi (a ride-hailing app) to book a ride. However, when the car arrived, the concierge instructed a bellboy to walk me to the car, but he never confirmed whether it was actually mine. Just as the door was closing, a woman with luggage rushed in, claiming it was her ride to the airport. It turned out the car was not for me but for an entirely different passenger! At this point, I was already late for my dinner reservation. When I walked back to the concierge to ask what happened, he seemed irritated and dismissively said, ”Don’t worry” before reluctantly walking me to the correct car. This lack of professionalism and carelessness was incredibly frustrating. If you’re arranging a ride for a guest, ensure they get into the correct car. Final Thoughts This all happened in just one night—I can't imagine what else could go wrong during my stay. I sincerely hope no other guests have to go through such an experience. The Ritz-Carlton brand is known for its luxury and top-tier hospitality, but what I encountered was discriminatory treatment, misleading sales tactics, and poor service coordination. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and improves their service, ensuring all guests receive fair and professional treatment, regardless of their appearance or nationality. Ps: nice swimming pool by the way!!
Banyan Tree Shanghai On The Bund

The room was amazing with a stunning view. On the whole it was a fantastic stay but there were one or two issues- 1. The yoga mats in the gym were filthy. And 2. I was bothered on a few occasions by cleaners or people coming to knock on the door e.g.the cleaner came inside the room even though I said it was too late and I didn't want the room to be cleaned now. It was around 5pm and no one had cleaned the room during the day, but by that time I was ready to relax. There was a language barrier so she just came in and started replacing snacks and drinks and tried to start cleaning up in the bathroom and I had to ask her to leave. I noticed before I left that there was a button for 'do not disturb' but it wasn't obvious so it would be good for the staff to mention that when showing you to your room. I also think it's a good idea for them to have a book with information regarding the restaurant, gym, spa etc.etc. there's some info on the TV but it isn't very detailed.

We booked a Parent-Kid Suite, which was advertised to accommodate four adults, but throughout our stay, only three towels were provided. Additionally, the only bathroom is located right next to one of the bedrooms, with no door and a fully transparent shower space. This setup is extremely awkward and inconvenient unless you’re traveling with very young children. The noise from the bathroom also inevitably disturbs whoever is sleeping in that bedroom. Another disappointment was the check-in process. We arrived at the hotel around 4 PM, but the front desk informed us that our room was still not ready due to a late check-out from the previous guests. This was frustrating, especially after a long flight, as we had expected to check in on time and freshen up immediately. That said, aside from the strange room layout, the hotel does have its positives. The location is great, with a partial view of The Bund, and the price is reasonable for this area. Overall, while the hotel has potential, the room design and service need improvement.

Maxx by Steigenberger on the Bund is amazing if you want to start and end your day with the magnificent views of the Bund! Just a short walking distance away is Yu Garden Train Station as well as Yu Garden itself, which is one stop away from Nanjing Road and the Pearl Oriental Tower. The service staff are warm, welcoming and super helpful! Rooms are very well designed giving a homely feeling and there are even robots to help send your deliveries or extra toiletries you need! I would definitely recommend this hotel to my friends and stay here again!

Hotel location is the best place to travel to Shanghai. The hotel staff service is excellent, too In particular, a Chinese employee named William responded very kindly. The night view of Shanghai Waitan from the hotel room is also fantastic The hotel's interior facilities are not very impressive. The bedding was good, but the facility felt too old. However, it was a pleasant trip to Shanghai because of the friendly staff's service.

After experiencing the luxurious service and comfortable facilities of Senz Hotel, I can't help but give high praise to this hotel and their management team, as well as Yiko of the front desk. Senz Hotel, from the moment you step into the lobby, you will feel at home. The lobby is modern and culturally rich, spacious and elegant, and the staff is very warm and thoughtful, and their professional and meticulous service attitude makes people admire. The accommodation environment here is spacious and quiet, which makes people completely relax and feel rare comfort and tranquility. However, what impressed me most was the management team of Senz. They won our respect with excellent management and professional service. From the overall operation of the hotel to the details, whether it is room service, catering service or other needs, they can get a quick and satisfactory response. This efficient and energetic team ensured that every need of ours was met, bringing us an excellent accommodation experience. Next is Estilo Restaurant. The food here is simply amazing! From the diversity and characteristics of the menu to the chef's superb cooking skills, to the delicious dishes, everything is amazing. Moreover, their service is first-rate, from pre-meal preparation to post-meal finishing, every link is well organized and meticulous. Whether it is a gathering with friends or a business banquet, Estilo Restaurant is an ideal choice. Special thanks to Mr. Noel and Charles for their hospitality. As for Ivy at the Spa, her professional skills and friendly service are unforgettable. Her massage techniques are skillful and in place, which makes me feel extremely relaxed and relieved after a busy work. Ivy is extremely sensitive to the needs of each guest and can accurately provide the most appropriate SPA services. Her professional knowledge and enthusiastic service made my experience in the Spa reach the extreme. Overall, Senz Hotel, Estilo Restaurant and the Spa have provided us with excellent service and experience. Whether it is the facilities, services or the professionalism of the management team, I am deeply satisfied. I highly recommend Senz Hotel and Estilo Restaurant to all friends who are looking for high-quality services and food, and I would also like to thank Ivy for the meticulous SPA service she provided us. I look forward to visiting Senz Hotel and Estilo Restaurant again to experience their excellent service and food again.

Besides the location and the gym, this hotel has little to offer. Getting a car takes at least 10 minutes and finding the place where to get into the car is no pick nick either. I requested a room with a window. Request was not granted. Fair enough. At around 2:30am it sounded like the smoke detector alarm went off in the room next to me. It went on for 5-10 minutes. Going off an on again several times. I checked outside my door, but no one else seemed to take it seriously as a fire hazard. The bedding was quite comfortable, so aside from the alarm going off, it was a good night’s sleep.

Very clean and a nice hotel. Large windows and automated blinds. The view was great - we could see the Pearl Tower, river, and Shanghai World Financial center. It's worth noting that the Pearl Tower view room didn't allow us to see the Pearl Tower from our beds - the viewing angle means you have to go right up to the corner of the window to see it. Would have been nice to see it from the entire room, but this is a minor aside. Main complaints would be that the pillows they provide are not firm at all. We had to ask the front desk for harder pillows, which they provided. Also, we saw a physical fight happening in the lobby with groups of travelers involved. The hotel did not do anything to stop it for a long time, which reflects poorly on such a nice hotel.

Entire hotel is modern and prettily designed. Location is accessible to many malls around the corner and there's a beautiful St Ignatius Cathedral next to it. Many amenities provided. Front desk also gave a set of children amenities - toothbrush set and child-size bedroom slippers. Didn't realize till too late but tea with snacks were free for guests at a certain timing and there was supper provided also from 9.30pm till late - chef preparing noodles that you prefer and select on your own from a variety of ingredients and choices. Very homely gesture yet warming for guests. Reason I found this was it was pretty close to the Shanghai South Railway station. The concierge and front desk manager helped us locate a taxi in the rain because Didi couldn't locate one. Everything was smooth and comfortable. Would highly recommend and will stay again when w get a chance.
Rezen Retreat(Shanghai Sanjia Xintiandi Tourism Resort)

Pudong International Airport Area
The hotel provided fast pick-up from Pudong Airport (reserved using WeChat). It took us over an hour to clear immigration, and the driver patiently waited for us. It’s about a 20-minute drive north from PVG to the hotel, which is less than average for hotels in the airport area. The hotel is located in a very quiet, peaceful, and quaint resort. Although we could see airplanes approaching from the northeast, preparing for landing, we didn’t hear any airplane noise while in the room. The hotel’s architecture is very unique. If you appreciate traditional Chinese Hui-style architecture, you’ll love the artistic and exquisite buildings with beautiful wood carvings. You’ll see courtyards with ponds, winding corridors, small bridges, and a river on the hotel property. Additionally, the resort features a lake with some water activities. It took my husband and me half an hour to stroll around the resort property. The walk was very relaxing and peaceful! The staff have been very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Our room is on the second level with no elevator, and the two front desk ladies helped us carry one checked bag upstairs. They are so awesome! I have a sensitive sense of smell and noticed that the bedding didn’t smell as nice as I would like. After asking the staff to change to a new set of bedding, they happily accommodated my request, even though it was a bit late in the evening, around 8 PM. The housekeeping lady was also very professional, warm, and helpful. She even tried to help me fix the door lock. It didn’t affect my ability to use the privacy chain to lock the door, so I told the front desk to resolve the door lock issue after we checked out. Their breakfast is one of the best I’ve experienced at a hotel in China, with many meat and vegetarian options. They even have vegetarian buns! The kitchen also provides freshly made wontons and noodles upon request. So delicious! Our checkout was supposed to be before 2 PM, but due to our departure flight delay, we had to stay at the hotel for another two hours. The manager offered to waive the late checkout fee for us. The hotel also offers airport drop-off upon reservation. There is no restaurant in the hotel; however, there’s an independently run restaurant in the resort, which is only a 2-minute walk from the hotel buildings. Although the hotel accepts foreign credit cards, this independent restaurant wasn’t able to accept my Alipay (linked to a foreign Visa credit card), and they didn’t accept foreign credit cards either. My relative in China ended up using the QR code provided by the restaurant and paid for me online. Given the hotel’s close proximity to the airport and its excellent service and environment, I would definitely recommend it to others and would return in the future.
