"Our planned stay in Ghent was cancelled and we needed a good hotel at short notice nearby. Opposite a magnificent cathedral is one of the best boutique hotels in Europe, the Steenhuyse. My wife and I are crusty travelers, venturing from home in Estonia, all over Europe. Why such a blushing review? 1) the rooms are bargain priced but are stunning, exciting, plush and exuding luxury. 2) the staff are attentive, intelligent and hard working, 3) the restaurant is worthy of at least a single Michelin star - seriously! 4) the wine list is short, but stunningly constructed and all the best wines are a bargain vs London, Paris or Tallinn. 5) breakfast is FRESH everything. But most of all, the Proprietor/Chef is a warm, hospitable, understated genius. Well behaved dogs are warmly welcomed, and he even prepared chicken stock dinner for our canine. WOW! "Our four night stay was pleasant. We treasure family owned hotels as they treat their guests like family. The staff were friendly and accommodating for our six person cycling group. Restaurant superb. Proximity to the Oudenaarde was key. The weather allowed us to enjoy the serenity of the property with some beers on the patio next to the pond which was spectacular for early April."
