Kyoto’s Long-Established “Sensan” – Delivered Shojin (Buddhist) Breakfas Shojin cuisine is a traditional style of Japanese cooking rooted in Buddhist teachings. It avoids the use of meat and seafood, instead using only plant-based ingredients such as grains, beans, and vegetables. Seasonings are used sparingly to bring out the natural flavors of the ingredients, and great care is taken to minimize waste by utilizing all parts of the food. Sensan’s signature “Iron Bowl Shojin Cuisine” is beautifully presented in a bowl shaped like a traditional begging bowl used by monks.
