Free Transit Hotel in China: Airlines, Eligibility and Booking Guide

A long layover in China does not always mean sleeping at the airport or paying for a hotel. Some Chinese airlines offer eligible transit passengers a complimentary one-night hotel stay. Depending on the airline, the service may also include breakfast and airport transfers. However, eligibility depends on your ticket, flights, fare class, layover time, transit airport, room availability, and permission to enter China.

What Is a Free Transit Hotel?

A free transit hotel is a complimentary one-night stay offered to passengers with a qualifying connection at selected airports in China. The hotel is usually arranged by the airline, although some airports may have separate transit accommodation programmes.

The benefit may include:

• One night at an assigned partner hotel
• Breakfast, depending on the airline
• Airport and hotel transfers, when available
• A shared twin room or private room, depending on your cabin and passenger status
• Assistance from the airline’s transfer service counter

The following are not always included:

• A private room
• Lunch or dinner
• Transportation between the airport and hotel
• Your preferred hotel
• China visa or temporary entry approval
• Additional hotel expenses

Rooms are limited and may sell out during holidays and other busy travel periods. A free transit hotel is also different from accommodation provided because of a cancelled or delayed flight.

Important China Entry Rules for Filipino Travelers

As of July 2026, Philippine passport holders are not included among the 55 nationalities eligible for China’s 240-hour visa-free transit policy.

Filipino travelers should remember:

• The 240-hour visa-free transit policy does not apply to ordinary Philippine passport holders.
• China’s 24-hour direct transit policy is available to passengers of all nationalities.
• Passengers using the 24-hour policy are generally required to remain inside the restricted transit area.
• A temporary entry permit is required if you need to leave the airport’s restricted area.
• Approval of a temporary entry permit is decided by Chinese immigration and is not guaranteed.
• A valid Chinese visa is generally required for a layover longer than 24 hours unless another entry exemption applies.
• Airline approval for a free hotel does not guarantee permission to enter China.

Check the latest information through the National Immigration Administration of China and the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines before booking your flight.

Who May Qualify for a Free Transit Hotel?

Requirements differ between airlines, but you may need to meet the following conditions:

• Both flights are booked under one itinerary or through ticket.
• The arriving and connecting flights use eligible airline flight numbers.
• The flights are operated by the airline or an approved partner.
• Your connection is at an eligible airport.
• Your layover meets the required minimum and maximum duration.
• Your booking class is included in the programme.
• You have a confirmed seat on the next flight.
• You have the documents needed to enter China and reach the hotel.
• You reserve the hotel before the airline’s deadline.
• A partner hotel room is still available.

Separate tickets normally do not qualify. Cheap promotional fares, award tickets, codeshare flights, infant tickets, and certain booking classes may also be excluded.

Before buying your flight, ask the airline:

“Does my exact ticket number, booking class, flight combination, transit airport, and layover time qualify for complimentary transit accommodation?”

Airlines Offering Transit Accommodation in China

Other Chinese airlines and airports may provide separate transit accommodation services. However, the rules can change without notice, so do not assume that a long layover automatically includes a hotel.

How to Apply for a Free Transit Hotel

Step 1: Check Before Booking Your Flight

Confirm the hotel benefit before paying for your ticket. Ask the airline to check your:

• Ticket number
• Booking reference
• Booking class
• Flight numbers
• Operating airlines
• Transit airport
• Layover duration
• China entry requirements

If possible, request written confirmation by email or through the airline’s official chat service.

Step 2: Reserve Through the Official Channel

Depending on the airline, you may need to reserve through:

• The airline’s official website
• The airline’s mobile app
• An official WeChat Mini Program
• The airline’s customer service hotline
• The transfer service counter after arrival

Some airlines require advance booking and will not accept applications at the airport. Reserve as early as possible because the number of rooms is limited.

Step 3: Save Your Confirmation

Take a screenshot or print a copy of your:

• Hotel confirmation
• Accommodation voucher
• Airline booking
• E-ticket
• Connecting flight details
• Airline instructions

Keep the hotel’s phone number and address in both English and Chinese.

Step 4: Follow the Instructions After Landing

After arriving at the transit airport:

4. Present your passport, boarding passes and hotel confirmation.

Do not leave the airport until immigration has approved your entry.

Xiamen Airlines Free Transit Hotel Process

For an eligible Xiamen Airlines connection, the general process is:

1. Confirm that both flights are on the same eligible ticket.
2. Check that the connection meets the 6-to-24-hour requirement.
3. Make sure the arrival and departure are on different calendar days when required.
4. Reserve through the Xiamen Airlines app or Mini Program, or apply at the designated transfer service counter.
5. Allow the staff to verify your ticket and travel documents.
6. Collect the Transit Passenger Check-in Form.
7. Travel to the assigned hotel and present the form at check-in.

At Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport, the transfer service counter is opposite Gate 7 on the first floor of Terminal 3.

Xiamen Airlines’ current hotel product includes one night of accommodation but does not include transportation between the airport and hotel. Economy passengers may need to share a standard twin room, while eligible first-class and business-class passengers receive a single room.

Keep the following items in your carry-on bag:

Your checked baggage may be sent directly to your final destination, so pack everything needed for the overnight stay in your hand luggage.

What to Expect at the Hotel

Transit hotels are usually located near the airport, but quality and facilities vary. The airline normally chooses the hotel, and passengers cannot always request a specific property.

Economy passengers may be asked to share a twin room with another passenger of the same gender. A private room may be available only if you pay an additional fee, but this depends on the airline and hotel.

Extra expenses such as meals, minibar items, room upgrades, late check-out and additional nights are usually not included.
