📍 What is Sinulog Festival?

Sinulog is one of the biggest festivals in the Philippines. It happens every third Sunday of January in Cebu City. The festival is held to honor the Santo Niño, or the Child Jesus, who is a big part of the faith of many Filipinos.

The main highlight is the Sinulog dance, where dancers move to a drumbeat with the steps “two steps forward, one step back.” This movement shows the people’s journey of faith and devotion. You will see bright costumes, street dancers, floats, and thousands of people shouting “Pit Señor,” asking blessings from the Santo Niño.

📖 What is the History and Origin of Sinulog Festival?

The story of Sinulog traces back to 1521, when Ferdinand Magellan gave a Santo Niño statue to Queen Juana of Cebu after she was baptized. The story of Sinulog traces back to 1521, when Ferdinand Magellan gave a Santo Niño statue to Queen Juana of Cebu after she was baptized.

Before this, locals already had ritual dances. When Christianity came, they kept the dance but changed its meaning to praise the Child Jesus. In 1980, Cebu City made Sinulog an official festival.

Today, Sinulog is a proud celebration of faith and culture that happens every January in Cebu.

🗓️ When and Where is Sinulog Celebrated?

The Sinulog Festival is celebrated every year on the third Sunday of January. The main events take place in Cebu City, one of the top travel spots in the Visayas.

Most major events are concentrated in central Cebu City, making it easy to explore the festival on foot if you stay nearby.

The heart of the celebration is at the Cebu City Sports Complex, but the fun spreads across many nearby streets.

🎭 What to Expect at Sinulog

1. Street Dancing Parade

This is the main highlight of Sinulog. You’ll see dancers from different parts of the country wearing colorful costumes and performing along the streets of Cebu. The music is loud, the drums keep beating, and the crowd is full of energy. Everyone is dancing, cheering, and shouting “Pit Señor!”

2. Fluvial Procession

This happens early morning, a day before the main parade. Devotees join a boat parade along the Mactan Channel, carrying the Santo Niño from Mandaue to Cebu. It’s calm, spiritual, and beautiful, especially during sunrise.

3. Grand Procession

Sinulog Festival

This religious walk is held the night before the street dancing. Thousands of people walk together, holding candles and praying. It’s a peaceful moment where everyone shows devotion and gratitude to the Santo Niño.

4. Fireworks and Street Parties

When the sun goes down, the whole city lights up with fireworks, loud music, and street parties. Major roads are closed, and people dance until late at night.

5. Food, Souvenirs, and Fairs

Cebu turns into a food and shopping spot during Sinulog. You’ll find lechon, puso rice, ngohiong, barbecue, and souvenir stalls selling festival shirts and Santo Niño items.

🛏️ Where to Stay in Cebu for Sinulog

Hotels in Cebu get fully booked quickly during Sinulog, so it’s best to plan and book early. Many travelers arrive days before the parade, and prices can increase as the festival gets closer.

Here are some areas and hotel suggestions based on your travel style:

🏙️ Cebu City Proper

Best for travelers who want to stay near the parade routes, churches, and main street events. Expect heavy crowds, but you’ll be right in the center of the action

  • Rajah Park Hotel – Budget friendly option with easy access to parade routes and dining spots

🌃 IT Park or Lahug

Ideal if you prefer modern hotels, food options, and a quieter place to rest after a long day. Still close enough to the city center.

🌉 Mandaue or Lapu-Lapu

Great for travelers who want to avoid city traffic and crowds. You’ll need transport to reach the festival areas, but the stay is more relaxed.

  • Maayo Hotel – Clean, quiet hotel with comfortable rooms and good service

✈️ How to Get to Cebu from Manila and Other Cities

Getting to Cebu is easy whether you’re flying or traveling by sea. Here are your main options:

🛫 By Flights

The fastest and easiest way is to fly.

  • Route: NAIA (Manila) to Mactan Cebu International Airport
  • Flight Time: Around 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • Airlines: Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, and AirAsia all have daily flights
Tip: Book early on Trip.com to catch promo fares for Sinulog season.

⛴️ By Ferry

A slower but scenic option.

  • Operator: 2GO Travel offers overnight ferry trips from Manila to Cebu
  • Travel Time: More than 20 hours
This is a good choice if you want a budget-friendly option and don’t mind the long ride.

🚗 Local Transport from the Airport

Once you arrive at Mactan Cebu International Airport, you can get to the city using:

  • Grab – Easy and safe option using your phone
  • MyBus – Air-conditioned city bus with fixed stops
  • Taxi – Available at the airport, but be sure to ask for the meter
💡 Tip: During Sinulog, traffic can be heavy. Leave early and stay patient, especially if you’re heading to the parade route or your hotel.

🧳 Practical Tips for Sinulog Festival

1. Book Flights and Hotels Early

Sinulog is one of the busiest times in Cebu. Flights and hotels get full fast. Book at least 1 to 2 months ahead to save money and get better options.

2. Wear Comfortable Clothes and Shoes

You’ll be walking a lot, sometimes for hours. Wear comfy shoes, light clothes, and bring a hat or cap. It can get hot and crowded during the parade.

3. Pack Smart

Use a small sling bag or belt bag. Keep it close to you. Bring water, face towel, cash, sunscreen, and a phone power bank. A raincoat or poncho is also a good idea in case of sudden rain.

4. Stay Alert in Crowds

Keep your things safe. Watch out for pickpockets, especially in big crowds. Don’t bring expensive items like jewelry or big cameras unless needed.

5. Respect the Religious Side

Sinulog is not just a party. It is also a religious event. If you see a procession or mass, keep quiet and show respect. You can join if you want, even just to observe.

6. Use Grab or MyBus for Travel

Traffic can be bad during the festival. Try using Grab or MyBus for easier transport. Walk if your destination is nearby. Some roads will be closed during the parade.

7. Join the Fun but Stay Safe

At night, there are street parties and music events. Drink water, stay with friends, and know your limits. If you’re lost, ask local police or event staff for help.

8. Try the Local Food

Don’t miss Cebu lechon, puso rice, ngohiong, and barbecue. Street food stalls are everywhere. Just make sure the food is clean before eating.

All bookings at Nustar Resort include breakfast and access to the Executive Club Lounge located on the 23rd floor of Fili Hotel. Mini-Bar is complimentary with a selection of 2 local beers, juices, and sodas. Nespresso machine with 4 capsules. TWG tea. Bottled water is unlimited. I appreciate the fridge being very cold. Gerlain Paris branded bathroom amenities, as well as bath salts for the large bath. Afternoon Tea (2:30 pm - 4:30 pm) Light snacks with a limited selection of savory and sweet bites, they need to improve on this. Evening cocktails and canapés (5:30 pm - 7:30 pm) Excellent food buffet. I like the lechon quesadillas, jalapeño cheese poppers, and siomai. I appreciate the bartender crafting cocktails from a menu of drinks. I understand the hotel is still brand new, but they need to do multiple inspections before releasing the room to guest. Vanity mirror was dusty from construction. The Butler service was very attentive, many thanks to Ice (Butler) for making my stay pleasant, he would escort me to the pool, and even breakfast buffet at Fili Hotel bypassing the crowd at the entrance. Breakfast Buffet is at Fili Hotel which is extensive and one of the best in Cebu. The problem is the crowd, while Nustar Butlers will escort Nustar guests to a table, there’s no dedicated tables for Nustar guests, which confuses the restaurant staff with seating assignments. Alternatively, the breakfast buffet at the executive club lounge is quiet but with limited options, they should have an a la carte menu to expand options like other international luxury hotels. The security at the lobby entrance is wildly inconvenient and inconsistent, every time you enter you need to prove you’re a guest of Nustar and not a guest of Fili or a casino player. It’s weird that they are sometimes overly strict and many times just ignore people passing by. Guests have a keycard to use elevators what’s the point of the guards that have a list of people’s names and room numbers, if anything that’s a security risk. The pool service is lacking. Shared between 2 hotels and the upcoming grand summit. The pool area lacks service of a 5-star hotel, towels need to be claimed at a towel hut. My expectation is that there are staff that will setup loungers with towels for guests. And since the pool facility is shared with the muncher large Fili Hotel it can get crowded. Fortunately, Nustar has a private infinity pool which was closed my stay. Nustar Resort has potential to be Cebu’s most luxurious hotel, they have the hard product with their spacious luxurious rooms, but they need to improve their soft product - the service from the butlers are outstanding and personal, but everyone else seems to be lost. For the asking price of 250-300 usd per night there’s a lot to expect. Nustar is primed for excellence but falls just short of achieving refined luxury. I’m hoping Nustar partners with Marriott and rebrand under Luxury Collection. Or even Hyatt with Unbound Collection.

The room was fantastic—spacious, modern, and incredibly clean. The bed was one of the most comfortable I’ve ever slept in, making it easy to get a great night's sleep. The shower was also excellent, with great water pressure and plenty of hot water, which is always a plus after a long day. Breakfast at the hotel was also great. With big variety and good quality of the food. From fresh fruit and pastries to hot dishes, everything was delicious and well-prepared. However, the check-in process was a bit slow. It seemed like the front desk was understaffed or perhaps dealing with a system issue, which caused some delays. Additionally, I was disappointed to find out that the swimming pool was under renovation during my stay. It would have been nice to know this in advance, as I was looking forward to using it after a long day in a car. Despite these minor inconveniences, I enjoyed my stay and would definitely consider returning.

The road in front of the hotel is too narrow, so you basically can't get in. I took a Grab, but they told me I couldn't go any further with that car. The hotel itself is nice, but the surrounding area is pretty trashy... I've included a photo from my room and a photo of the building next door, where only the hotel side is painted white to make it look nice. The hotel itself is clean. It would have been better if there was a refrigerator.

We've been to different hotels during our 3-week vacation in Cebu, and this was by far our favorite. The room was clean and spacious. We stayed here for more than a week and it was very comfortable. The location was great as it's very close to almost anything. There are restaurants, pharmacy, and a laundry shop just on the first floor of the same building which was very helpful and convenient for us during our long stay. The hotel staff were accommodating and would attend to our requests instantly. Would definitely come back when we go back to Cebu next year. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We stayed here for 3 nights. The whole experience staying here was all worth it for less than 2,500php per night you already have a buffet breakfast with complete complimentary items such as slippers, towels, soaps, toothbrush & toothpaste, bottled water, and coffee with sugar, creamer, and mugs of course. Plus the room is spacious with sofa and workspace with strong wifi connection. They will clean the room every afternoon. They have water heater, ref, hair blower, safety box for your valuable items, split type aircon, hot & cold shower, lots of cabinets, and 1 water dispenser per floor outside. They also have gym and swimming pool. And the food in their restaurant? So goood. See photos for your reference. We ordered for room service as it was raining on the first night of our stay and tried their buffet dinner on the last night of our stay for only 705php with steaks, ramen, mostly filipino, japanese, and american food choices. Also, the area is peaceful since its like inside a village away from highway with 7/11 nearby. We'll surely go back here whenever we visit Cebu again. Thank you so much!!! Note: You will have to pay a 1K deposit in cash which will returned upon check-out.

Bohol Island came across a recommendation from a latent friend, the boss' mother went to China, and the boss could speak Chinese. The room was very clean. I left after transitioning to one night. There are supermarkets around and barbecues. I'm lucky, one room per person, I don't know what it feels like to be full.
