Ibis Styles Invercargill

The hotel has breakfast. Although it is not very rich, it is full of nutrition and it is already in the room when you check in. The hotel does not have its own parking lot, but the car can be parked on the road in front of the hotel. It is free from 6pm to 9am the next day.
Bella Vista Motel Te Anau

We accidently booked the wrong day through an app we used, and we called the Bella Vista Motel immediately to let them know and they were beyond helpful and understanding. It was a non-refundable booking, however within minutes the front of house manager was able to sort the booking and said we could use the booking for the date we actually wanted. Really lovely guy and understanding. The room was clean, facilities were hot and honestly for the money I don't think you could get much better. We stayed at a 4 star hotel in QT and it was rubbish compared to this place. The WIFI was super fast, able to watch films between the 3 of us, download, etc. It had something insane like 1TB of data to use, all free of charge. Had a sink, kettle, all the usual stuff and honestly top class. Well done guys, will stay again if we do another great walk!!
Kingsgate Hotel Te Anau

We travel very often and can honestly say we have never been welcomed so friendly and treated so great. Although an older building, it was very clean and welcoming. Room was very spacious with a small living area. Coffee station and toiletries was very good. We had a room with a reasonable lake view. We had to do some laundry while there. It was so easy in huge machines. We stayed there on by birthday and was treated with a lovely breakfast. Although a small selection, it was extremely tasty and freshly made. We wanted to stay for breakfasts on other mornings but could not as we had to leave early. Thank you so much for an awesome stay. Will be back again.
Fiordland Hotel

Unfortunately initial entering into the carpark at the hotel was to say at the very least, unsightly. The building to the left of the carpark entrance at reception has windows boarded up and is not a nice sight. Reception area smelt damp and musty and was not inviting. Rooms are OK - has fridge, TV (though reception not always that great), guest laundry. Bed was comfortable. Some furnishings need repair/replacement. Curtains half of the tracks. With a little more upkeep it would be a more inviting place to stay. There is no pool, no restaurant, and any outdoor facilities, eg mini golf - is derelict and unsightly.
Tui Base Camp

This was a good, convenient, motel to stay at the night before and after the Hump Ridge Track. I had a spacious two bedroom apartment. The bed was comfortable and I slept well. It was reasonably clean, while acknowledging that a lot of guests are trampers walking the Hump Ridge Track with hiking boots, equipment and attendant mud which has to be constantly kept clean. Tui Base Camp has a reasonable restaurant. However, as in many places in New Zealand the food is simply from packets or cans and sold at high markup. Tasty and filling, but not gourmet or reflective of thoughtful cuisine. I'm sure my corn and bacon chowder was simply from a can. Chips were no doubt frozen from a packet. The only item which was truly delicious was the steak (I'm on a minimal meat diet and only have a steak two or three times a year, so this was quite a treat). The breakfast was excellent, really tasty and abundant. As this is rural New Zealand everything comes with butter which I don't usually eat, but actually it was really good. The waitress even got me a pint of pineapple juice from the bar which is just what I felt like the morning after finishing the Hump Ridge Track! My only concern about staying here was that the gas hob in the apartment I stayed in was extremely old, and I'm sure I could smell gas when I walked into the unit. When I tested the hob it had a lot of orange flame in the blue. Gas flames should be entirely blue, and the presence of a significant amount of orange or red flame indicates the hob needs attention, even if it's just careful cleaning. I mentioned this to the management as I was concerned about leaking gas. They didn't really seem to care. As a result I slept with my door shut and the windows open in my bedroom (I had a two bedroomed unit). This is a reasonable place to stay in Tuatapere, but I'd probably try somewhere else next time.
Tower Lodge Motel

I didn't expect it to be so good when I made the reservation. I liked it when I arrived. I went to the supermarket to buy steak and cooked it myself. The whole family gathered together and it felt like home. The whirlpool bathtub was very comfortable.
Manapouri Lakeview Motor Inn

The room is not big, the location is excellent, facing the lake view, the snow-capped mountains against the Manapuri Lake is like a fairyland. Stayed for four days, reluctant to leave. The pier to Doubtful Sound is nearby, and walking along the lake is the ultimate enjoyment. Wan Lai was all quiet, except for the sound of the lake beating against the shore. Personally, I think this place is better than Queenstown because there are few people and the commercial atmosphere is not so obvious. Driving to Lake Te Anau is only over 20 kilometers.
Kelvin Hotel

I stayed here for a total of three nights while transiting between the Hump Ridge Track and Stewart Island in late December 2022. I booked the King Suite, a spacious studio apartment of penthouse proportions with sweeping views out across Invercargill and towards the Southland plains in one direction and Bluff in another. With the exception of the luxurious bathroom, the room was somewhat dated, and the circa 1980s shagpile carpet definitely needs replacing. However, it was still quite relaxing and comfortable. The highlight of staying here were the excellent staff and their exemplary level of support and service. I was abruptly woken in the early hours of the morning on my first night due to extremely loud guests in a neighbouring room who appeared to be in the hotel to drink and play in the gaming lounge. When I mentioned this to the staff at reception the next morning they promptly offered to move me to another room, which I accepted. Admittedly the second room was much more tired and worn than the King Suite, but the bed was comfortable, the sheets 5-star and I slept very well on the second night. Not only did they move me but they gave me, completely un-requested on my part, a partial refund to reflect the lower price difference of moving into the second room (the suite I initially stayed in is the most expensive room in the hotel). I greatly appreciated the management and reception's thoughtful responses to my need for a good night's sleep before starting out on the Hump Ridge Track. When I returned about 5 days later, I stayed in the King Suite, that I first been booked into, again. The noisy guests in neighbouring rooms had checked out, and the room was quiet and relaxing, just what I needed after completing the Hump Ridge Track. It is true that this hotel could do with a general refurbishment and renovation, but it represents good value for money with excellent staff, among the best I have met anywhere the world, and probably the friendliest and most helpful I've ever met in a New Zealand hotel. I also stayed, after returning from Stewart Island in early January, at the band new Langlands Hotel which, like the Kelvin Hotel, is also owned by the Invercargill Licensing Trust (ITL). While I thoroughly enjoyed the luxury at the Langlands I equally enjoyed the Kelvin and would happily stay here again.

Stayed 1 night before taking the ferry to stewart island. Amazing view out over the ocean. The room was quite small but it worked well enough for 1 night. Room nicely decorated and supplied tea and coffee making facilities. The guy at the desk was super friendly. The stirling point sign is just across the road and there is a returaunt next door.

Great Motel and a great price. Owner was very welcoming and friendly. Unit was spacious. Loved the comfy chairs in front of the TV. Good selection of coffee, tea etc and snack packs of biscuits. Bed was so comfortable, had a fantastic sleep. Shower had good pressure. Would definitely stay again. Highly recommended.
