Jorakuji Temple: A tour of the Chita Shikoku Pilgrimage

Jorakuji Temple was built to commemorate those who died in the Onin War. It is also the temple where Tokugawa Ieyasu (then Matsudaira Motoyasu), who lost the Battle of Okehazama (1560), stopped off on his way to Okazaki to seek the help of his cousin, Shonin Kenro, before returning to Okazaki. The stirrups and saddle he received at that time are still kept as temple treasures. Ieyasu visited Jorakuji Temple twice after that, and his relationship with the Tokugawa family continues to this day. The cherry blossoms and camellias were in full bloom on the day I visited. The statue of Amida Nyorai enshrined in the main hall has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan for its beautiful appearance and robe.
