Grays Court Hotel

Everything about this hotel is first class. The building is amazing, very clean and well kept. The staff are very welcoming, the room was comfortable and quiet. The breakfast was also very good.

We were a group of 6 who spent two nights at the hotel to celebrate a birthday. We all absolutely loved this hotel. The booking procedure a few months ago was efficient and friendly. Our rooms were all gorgeous - huge bedrooms and bathrooms with lovely Clarins toiletries. We all commented on how comfortable the beds and pillows are. We didn’t eat in the hotel this time but will do so another time. We were given the Minster room for our breakfast which was fabulous. A shout out to Zoe who served our breakfast each day - so friendly and efficient. The location is perfect for exploring York and all the attractions were in walking distance. The decor and furnishings are beautiful throughout the hotel. The large bar is friendly with excellent service Highly recommend and very much hope to be back Thank you to all the staff. Anne & co

Hotel was full of character and historical interest. It is in an excellent position next to the minster but in a quiet street. The lovely gardens lead up to the walls. All the staff were very friendly and obliging. The Sunday dinner was superb. It was a perfect place to celebrate our golden wedding anniversary.

My son recently married here and we all stayed over. It was absolutely beautiful and perfect in every way. Building was full of character. Staff amazing and food excellent.

I and my sister in law have had a wonderful overnight stay in their twin room. We had the window open (menopause ladies) - and it was silent. Great shower, super comfortable beds - just everything!!! We were treated like royalty and also like friends. The staff looked after us beautifully. Save up and stay here - you will love it!

Stayed here for 3 nights to celebrate my husband's 65th birthday. The rating for this hotel should have been excellent, but the many, many positives were let down by one or two minor issues which could have, and should have been rectified. The positives - the location is excellent as is the overall standard of the hotel. The pre-booking information and welcome from the hotel was very good. We had a lovely comfortable, spacious room and bathroom with a view of the Minster but in a very quiet secluded location. The interior and gardens of the hotel are also exceptional. Overall, the service was very good and the staff absolutely lovely. The dinner we had on our first evening was also exceptional. The food was prepared and cooked to perfection and the staff couldn't have been more helpful and attentive. The negatives - the first was that our TV did not work. Its relatively minor and we didn't come to York to watch TV, but the weather was absolutely awful, torrential rain, and we spent more time than expected indoors. On the first day, after sending out for a different cable, the staff managed to fix the TV so that it could get BBC iPlayer and Netflix, but there were no mainstream channels and despite various attempts to retune the TV, that's the way it stayed for the duration of our trip. It was a pity that this did not seem to be recognised as a negative factor when I gave feedback when checking out of the hotel. The second more important negative was breakfast. I had read various reviews of this hotel before I booked and there were a great many very positive reviews overall but several of the poor reviews referred to the breakfast. I though they might just be 'one-offs'. The hotel doesn't offer a huge range at breakfast, in that it doesn't do cereal other than granola, and there are no continental options. Fair enough, since we like to have a full/part English/Scottish or various poached egg based dishes. I'd read reviews which complained about the toast being brought straight away, so I asked for the toast o be brought at the same time as the breakfast. This was fine on the first day. The toast comes served on a board with separate butter and home made (delicious) jams. The disappointing thing was that the toast seemed to be basic supermarket white/brown sliced - not what I expected with a five star breakfast. Unfortunately my husbands poached eggs were overdone. The second day breakfast was just a disaster from start to finish. The tea was tepid and had to be replaced. I opted for bacon and scrambled eggs and white toast. The bacon looked and felt like it had been cooked the night before and reheated - it was very tough and basically inedible. In addition, the server had put the toast on the same plate as the food and had pre-buttered it - the whole plate looked like a one star breakfast, soggy toast and brick hard bacon. It was replaced with a fresh plate, but it was like a different restaurant to the day before. We were first in for breakfast
