Middlethorpe Hall- just outside York is a William-and-Mary country house- built in 1699 of mellow red bricks with limestone dressing. The Hall has been elegantly decorated in the manner of the 18thC and furnished with antiques and fine paintings- so that its look and ambiance is that of a well-kept- well-furnished private manor house rather than a 29-bedroomed hotel.
Middlethorpe Hall is renowned for its imaginative cuisine -the only restaurant in York awarded 3 rosettes by the AA- and its oak-paneled dining room which overlooks the manicured gardens.
The 20 acres of manicured gardens and parkland which surround Middlethorpe Hall include a fragrant rose garden- intriguing walled garden and romantic meadow which leads to a lake surrounded by beautiful specimen trees.

This was a treat from me to myself. I had a fabulous time at Middlethorpe Hall. From the spa to the dinner to the breakfast and treatment the next morning. It was a dream. The garden is also very pleasant to walk around and every single staff member I crossed paths with made sure I felt welcome. I highly recommend!

We spent two nights at Middlethorpe Hall Hotel, and it was fantastic. The staff were so lovely and attentive from start to finish. The hotel is a gorgeous, historic, well-kept National Trust property—delivering beauty and comfort at every turn. The food was incredible. We didn't experience the dinner (opting to eat out in York) but the breakfast was divine— quite possibly the best smoked salmon and scrambled eggs I’ve had. And the spa? Amazing. The massage was so relaxing I fell asleep. If you’re looking for classic luxury and real comfort, we highly recommend it.

We visited over the halloween weekend and stayed in a Courtyard room which was very cute and didn't feel like a hotel room at all. I (female, 50) booked the hotel and thought my husband (aged 50) will either love this place or hate it. Needless to say, he absolutely loved it. Feels like staying in a lovely country home and much better than any impersonal hotel. Breakfast was delicious and the staff cannot do enough for you. The staff were absolutely fabulous from the very dapper Lionel, Josh and Mike, we were welcomed warmly and really felt at home immediately. Lovely gardens to peruse after a tasty breakfast was a highlight. We also visited the spa and booked massages which really helped our relaxation and I would highly recommend a treatment whilst staying at the hotel. Spa staff were knowledgeable, approachable and friendly. 10 out of 10, we will definitely be back. We didn't eat in the restaurant this visit as we wanted to explore York but we heard wonderful things from other guests so we will definitely be booking an evening meal on our next trip.
