We visited for Sunday lunch on January 19 having purchased a voucher for 3 courses and a glass of wine. Or maybe it was methylated spirits. It was hard to tell. The food was passable at best but the service was as slow as a snail. It was indeed a very leisurely lunch. Fortunately, we did not run out of conversation although many other diners appeared to be resorting to their phones for entertainment - or maybe it was to tell their loved ones they would not be home for a while. In truth, Wroxall Abbey has all the potential to be a magnificent hotel, restaurant and spa but until there is a serious injection of money (and all the management skills needed to run such an establishment) I fear that our last Sunday lunch will be the last we have there for quite a while. Which is a shame both for the staff - who I’m sure were all decent people but who clearly lacked management - and the local community who have seen Wroxall Abbey lurch from one issue to the next .

Buckle up… this may be long. Visit 19-Jan2025. We usually adopt the attitude that ‘you can’t please all the people all the time’ when we read reviews but the reviews of this place had us worried. We arrived to a full car park which was promising but it turned out that the congregation for the church used the car park and in fact we were one of only 2 couples staying that night ( as far as we know). We entered and the entrance felt WARM, there WAS someone on reception and it DIDN’T take 45 minutes to check in. Our room contained a portable heater and closing the heavy curtains kept the draught out. The room was clean and very pleasant. At dinner time we went to the dining room where it seemed to be a problem to find more than one copy of the (limited) menu but we shared and ordered. The waiter referred to a ‘chef’ which implies someone in a kitchen, making food… We each ordered the chicken parfait which was clearly not made on site so ‘chef’s’ input was to add a few salad leaves and way too much sea salt. The main of fish and chips was a pre shaped, frozen, supermarket style piece of fish in batter with oven chips and peas. The desserts appeared shop bought, too. There only being 2 couples in the hotel, obviously there was zero atmosphere but I guess it wasn’t so cold that we had to wear coats so we took that as a bonus. Our stay was a Christmas gift bought on a Wowcher. Be warned that if your Wowcher refers to £25 a head credit against dinner, apparently it’s only there ‘for information’ and the hotel will not honour it unless it’s specifically referred to as being part of your package (which they said ours did not). Not as bad as we expected but food very disappointing and far from cheap. And, no, the bedroom door DID NOT LOCK AND CAN BE PUSHED OPEN WITHOUT A KEY. Luckily, once inside the room, there was a security lock which we used overnight.

To say that we were so very disappointed in not only the service but quality aswell is an understatement. We purchased a groupon voucher for a 3 course Sunday lunch meal with glass of wine for 2. The hotel looked lovely on arrival so we had high expectations. We were shown to a table-then we were just left. It was not busy but the service was extraordinarily slow and the waiting staff were not at all attentive to guests. The dining room was very cold. We were there for 2 and half hours altogether sitting at our table due to the poor and lengthy wait for service. We had to ask for a jug of water after about 15 minutes. We were then given a menu and advised of a change in the fish option, which when we eventually ordered was not available anyway. The starter of soup was tepid but tolerable so rather than complain that was consumed. The main course was cold so had to be sent back, eventually when we got the staffs attention, and then there was a sharp piece from a sorbet carton in my sweet which I almost swallowed and could have resulted in a much more concerning and different outcome. After relaying to the manager our dissatisfaction we were offered another meal to demonstrate that they did provide a good quality service. We duly went again last week but the service was still extremely poor, we were not shown to our table as there were no staff round….and after 15 minutes we just decided to go and sit down ourselves. There were one other couple there. The menu was very limited in choice and there was no healthy or vegetarian option. There were 2 steak options, fish and chips, burgers or chicken curry. After specifically asking if the curry was spicy we were advised it definitely wasn’t hot in taste which was completely untrue. Our starter was of limited choice-soup or samosas-the same as the Sunday menu. Again the lengthy wait for any requests and service was completely unacceptable. We had to ask for our wine half way through the main course as they didn’t offer it us and the curry was just intolerably hot in taste to the extent that we left it. The sweet course was either ice cream or cheesecake. We have never been out for a meal which has been so terribly unacceptable, and as for being that bad twice it speaks volumes. What can we say-except that we would not recommend it to anyone. We are more annoyed that we made the 50 miles round trip twice to have such an unbelievably poor service and experience on both occasions . Never to be repeated.

Wroxall Abbey looks fantastic. The stain glass window, in particular, is gorgeous. Friday night, we and 3 other couples booked in for dinner and a nights stay via wowcher. The positives are amazing looking buildings in spectacular settings. The food was really nice and the staff when you found them were really nice and helpful. Unfortunately, that was the end of the positives. The telephone system isn't working so it's hard to make contact with them. Email if you need to tell them anything. We checked in, and the receptionist (she had multiple jobs) was really apologetic about the phone issue. Our room looked nothing like photos it was small and cramped and freezing cold. We went back to reception to ask if they could sort out the heating. A gentleman had taken over, and English wasn't his first language, and it took a while to sort out, but the maintenance man stepped in, and said he'd take a mini heater up. My husband went up during dinner to see if they had and only realised after he'd walked in that he hadn't taken the key, but the door opened. We told our companions and found none of their rooms were locked either. Our bathroom was so tiny you could wash your hands while sitting on the loo! We had multiple menus at dinner all different and had to ask which was right. The dining room was freezing, so much so several of our party had to eat in their coats. No one seemed to know how much anything was. We were charged several different prices for the same round. Our friends had to change rooms due to a leak and were moved to a four poster room, and everyone except ours was freezing during the night. I absolutely wouldn't recommend this hitel until the new staff have been there awhile and the spa is open.

We stayed Monday 30th December I honestly don't know where to begin: 1 - Arrived and checked in fine, went to lift and looked up and saw a light fitting with more dead flies and daddy longlegs than I could count, to be accompanied by a strong smell of cigarette smoke coming up the corridor. 2 - no central heating in our room and given a small heater - we should have been advised at reception or before we arrived, as this is pretty standard as a customer service POV - not there problem but my wife is having Chemo and being in a cold room was horrendous for her as getting sick is not an option so slept in her coat and the room could not get warm enough with the small heater nor could you leave that on while not in the room as would cause a fire. (Clearly been a problem since October as seen Trip Advisor reviews) 3 - no towels provided in the room, could of been missed by house keeping, fair enough but standards? Saying that we had hand towel so using previous guests maybe, it was folded up on the floor? 4 - the state of the bed sheets and linen was disgusting, we didn't arrive back until 10.30pm and wanted to go to sleep, then to have deal with stained and ripped linen and a king-size cover on a double duvet was just odd. I think there was blood on the sheets and plenty of other stains 5 - clean your rooms correctly, it's honestly disgusting the amount of dust and grime was shocking. They say 4 star hotel, which it is far from. 6 - came down to reception to greeted by a gentleman in a tracksuit and addidas cap and cigarette in his mouth at reception. We know where the smell of cigarette is from now, God knows if he works for them or not but I guess so. 7- literally no one in the hotel and you put us in a room with a view of the walkin fridge and freezer and bins, bin bags bottles left in court yard. Below fans and noise from all applianaces that can be heard all night long, cracking idea. There was only 5 other cars in car park and I saw the check in sheets when I arrived. Clearly at maximum 15% occupancy in entire Hotel. 8 - we skipped breakfast as we genuinely were concerned if the rooms are that dirty and standards so low what is the kitchen like? So paid to fo elsewhere rather than have food poisoning on top of chest infections from the cold. I understand that we were on voucher but most definitely didn't wow me to come back outside of an offer. I wouldn't return if it was free and all expenses paid,I would say no in its current state, it honestly terrified me how badly a hotel could be run of such elegance from the outside then to be horrified when you walk in. I would advise getting better security measures as anyone can roam around the hotel as there are no security doors on any level so found it odd a guy walking round trying all the doors, again in casual clothing so who knows if he works there. But didn't seem to open any of the doors.
