"The Gateway is a beautiful boutique property with a scenic view of the sea from the room balconies. The rooms are tastefully done, nothing less expected from a property managed by Taj group. Ample parking, good dining experience with great F&B staff - special thanks to Gokul, Kartik and Vinayak for taking good care of us. Improvements can be made on the snacks served for hi-tea, though. The front desk staff, barring the ladies, weren’t very courteous, and the welcome treatment was varied depending on the guests. Didn’t like that a bit - hope Taj does some re-training for their male reception staff. No greetings offered by either one of them for a couple of days stay at the hotel. Did mention it to the manager when we were leaving the place and hope they improve upon this aspect."

"Loved this place! Binu gave a very warm welcome and was very helpful during my stay. Varlala Villa is spotlessly, clean, comfortable, quiet and only a 10 minute walk to the beach. They only have 4 rooms. My room was huge and the bed was very comfortable. There is a kitchen for use with a fridge, kettle, tea, coffee and drinking water. Really enjoyed my stay."

"Fantastic location - just a short tuk tuk ride from the train station and a couple of minute walk ***** the cliff with stairs to the beach very close by. The guesthouse is tucked away down a cute alley and as you come out of it you are surrounded by bars and shops on either side with a gorgeous view out over the beach. We stayed in one of the bottom rooms, as we were told it was a little cooler, and found the temperature to be comfortable, especially with the decent fan. The room was clean with comfy pillows and free WiFi. Our host was lovely and welcoming. He spoke fantastic English so we chatted for a while. He was really helpful in letting us know where to eat and which ATM would provide the best rates, even offering to drive us there. On the day we left, we had a few hours before the train so he let us check out late for free and then leave our bags in his room so we didn't have to carry them around with us. A great stay in Varkala!"

"Great Location, Best Hospitality Soj joys is wonderfully located at just stone throw away from north cliff. In fact it’s the only full fledged upscale hotel with amenities that close to the beach. In evenings traffic is blocked for cars from the main road into the road leading to cliff hence it was absolutely convenient to have a hotel that close to the beach. Rooms are large, and very aesthetically decorated with paintings, pool is decent size for a quick splash in the water. Rooms, Hotel premises, Bathrooms, Showers, everything is very clean and nicely maintained. 5/5 on location and cleanliness Staff is absolutely welcoming, giving personal attention, greeting with a smile always. Food is absolutely delicious, best we had in our 10 day Kerala trip. Though spread is limited in breakdown, you have everything needed for a hearty meal, nuts, cereals, fresh juices, fruits, yogurts, smoothies and traditional Indian dishes were mouth watering. Hats off to their in house chefs for such delicious homely meals. Food 5/5 Staff 5/5 Will definitely stay here next time we’re in Varkala."

Elixir Cliff Beach Resort and Spa
"This hotel was the worst of the 10 hotels we stayed at during our 17 day trip. The other hotels were all 8+/10 this was a 3/10. Staff were unfriendly and the least welcoming we experienced. The hotel had 100 police staying with very loud music playing from our arrival to 11pm and they started singing loudly at 7am. There was mess from food left lying around for hours attracting crows, the crows would knock glasses over on the tables to get the remnants, in the end we picked them up and returned them before they smashed. Rooms tired, bathroom blind covered in mould. Air conditioning very noisy and not very effective. DISGUSTING pool towels that were filthy and in desperate need of a wash - fortunately we had our own. The pool steps were located nearest the cliff which ment walking around the narrow edge, this was a problem as the tiles surrounding the pool were broken/loose in places so we didn't trust the ledge to get to the steps. Breakfast started at 08:30 and we needed to leave before then. We complained to our travel agent about the noise and they reassured us it would not be happening on our second day and someone would come and discuss our concerns, we were not approached by anyone....I believe the travel agent has now written to them and are no longer using this hotel. On a positive they rang for a tuk tuk to take us to Varkala Cliff so we could eat out, enjoyed both meals at Clafoutis. The cafe next to the hotel also did a fantastic breakfast as we didn't fancy sharing breakfast time with all the police. The beach was nice and we enjoyed swimming in the sea with the waves."

"My experience during the stay was extremely pathetic 1. Reception counter was most of time empty , Linen was dirty inside the room. 2 No Intercom Facility 3. We had to search a person everytime to provide water 4. There is no restaurant and no proper place to eat. We had to order food from Zomato. Moreover No Buffet Breakfast. The only Breakfast they had was omelette , Water Melon, Cold Sambha and small cold dosas. One should order one thing at a time, otherwise they bring all items after making you wait for an hour. 5. Jhoola / Swing was broken. 6. During Power cut off, the staff had to be searched in the whole property to switch on the generator, 7. Overgrown grass in the lawn, no place to walk. 8 And Sorry, no good views from the property. Absolutely waste of time and money. Not recommended at all . Visit and Explore at your own risk"

"I went travelling around south india for a few months and found a lot off the hotels were either over priced or dirty. This hotel was the first place I stayed which was clean, cheap and amazing service. The manager was the most helpful we ever met. Was always there when you needed him and was always happy to help with all inquiries. The room was clean and simple. Mosquito nets had been fitted through out so didn't have as much worry. Definetely would stay here again and reccomend for anyone wanting to be by the beach and don't want to spend loads off money. This hotel is perfect for everyone!!"
