4-Star Luxury Hotel for the Backpacker Price of $40/night!
The first thing you notice about Sokha Palace Siem Reap Hotel is just how pretty it is! The architect, painters, decorators and maintenance staff did a fabulous job (see my photos). The second thing you notice is how delicious the huge buffet is – including free espresso drinks. Third, you notice that the rooms are not only nice but that everything works well (aircon, hot water showers, refrigerator, wifi, and cable TV with news channels from a half dozen countries like CNN). Fourth, it is in a quiet location less than 15 minutes from Angkor Wat, and only a $2 tuktuk ride to Pub Street or anywhere else in Siem Reap.
But then you notice the best part: the outstanding hotel staff. For example, the Front Desk Manager Phyrun personally helped me when I could not make my room keycard work, and even brought me a bucket of ice. Originally I booked five nights during Chinese New Year with Trip.com discounts for $39/night, but he gave me a free upgrade from a garden view double with king bed to a pool view room. I liked it so much I wanted to extend, but the best I could find online was $41/night garden view, $51 for pool view. I asked Phyrun if I could get the upgrade again if I bought the $41 online, and he said no – but he smiled and said he would give it to me for $40/night the Khmer rate instead (normally $50 for barangs like me)!
The restaurant had other examples of great staff. Some days the restaurant is overflowing with several hundred guests, other days only a few dozen. Yet they maintain the quality and personal touch from the egg and soup station, to the bountiful buffet, to the waiters and waitresses that clear the tables. The Restaurant Manager Somedy and his Assistant Manager Chhaiya keep it all flowing smoothly. Even on the busiest day, waitress Chanthla took the time to show my Khmer friend’s elderly stepmom the way they fold the napkins. Today the espresso machine was not working for a while, so Chhaiya offered to have a waiter drive over to the sister hotel to bring me lattes. I repeatedly declined, but was very impressed by the excellent customer service attitude.
So the real beauty of this French chateau style hotel is its employees, including very efficient housekeeping and grounds staff. I checked out the “5-Star” Sokha Resort on the other side of its convention center, but did not like it half as much (especially for 70% more per night). Normally I would be afraid to write a review of a hotel that I like so much, but with 456 rooms I don’t have to worry about it being full. Do yourself a favor and stay here when in Siem Reap.

We love this hotel. Staff are friendly and courteous. Great little pool, fitness centre and breakfast all included. The kids loved the live fish and there is a modern supermarket, carrying an amazing array of western groceries, just across the road. Close to the action, this is a good choice for a well priced hotel.

This hotel has been the best experience of any hotel I’ve stayed at. It started from day one when my flight arrived very early in the morning and I was thinking I’m going to have to sit in the lobby for hours before I can get my room. The receptionist was able to give me a room when I arrived in the morning. I was surprised I have never been allowed to enter a room before 2 PM. Everyone Who works at the hotel has a smile on their face. The rooms are very spacious and very clean. I cannot recommend this hotel enough. I will definitely be staying here again

The appearance of the room compares to the price, and the price is very high.
The location is indeed on the wrong side. After taking a few taxi rides, almost everyone can't find the right entrance. It is not recommended for those who like the street and lively.
In addition, there are windows at the front and rear, but no screens. If there are too many mosquitoes, the windows cannot be opened, and only the air conditioner can be used. The air conditioner is noisy and the light is strong, resulting in poor sleep quality during the few nights. I wanted to live so that I could get a good night's sleep, but it didn't achieve my goal.
The waiter is very nice and there are people waiting no matter how late it is. It's just that it is too far to go to the place to buy medicine by car, and it cost $4 to go back and forth in their tutu car. Actually, there is a pharmacy not far from the road on the left.
The pick-up charge was $12, and Ctrip paid $2. However, after that, the airport still said that there was a charge. The free pick-up and drop-off did not come true. It is recommended that the hotel do not play the side ball. If it is free, it is free. In order to make some money, the sign is smashed, and the seat is too low. Stayed for five nights, the overall impression is not good, it is not recommended.

GGuest UserSala Lodges in the enchanting city of Siem Reap is nothing short of a hidden gem that boasts not only of charming aesthetics but also of exceptional service that made our stay unforgettable. Nestled quietly away, this hotel provided a tranquil retreat that was much needed during our travel.
The service at Sala Lodges was commendable, embodying the true spirit of hospitality. The staff were attentive, approachable, and consistently willing to assist us in organizing our trips around Siem Reap, making the overall experience hassle-free and enjoyable. A special shoutout to the Swiss owners who were genuinely amiable and made us feel warmly welcomed.
As for the accommodations, the rooms in Sala Lodges were a delightful surprise. Each room bore discrete charm with its tasteful decoration, seamlessly blending traditional and contemporary elements. The authentic Khmer old houses are full of charm, yet modern and well preserved.
The hotel’s kitchen offered a menu that might seem simple at a glance but was satisfyingly delightful upon tasting. Every dish we tried was prepared well, with fresh ingredients and flavors that are comforting yet exciting to the palate. The breakfast, in particular, deserves an extra note of praise for being consistently good, providing a delightful start to our days of exploration.
Adding to the hotel’s allure was the inviting swimming pool, serving as a refreshing sanctuary after a day of touring the magical temples and vibrant markets of Siem Reap. During the wet season, the atmosphere around Sala Lodges was even more calming and soothing, with the soft sound of rain providing a comforting backdrop to our stay.
To sum it up, our experience at Sala Lodges was nothing short of magical. From the excellent service to the beautifully appointed rooms and delightful meals, every aspect of the hotel contributed to a stay that was serene, comfortable, and absolutely enjoyable. Whether you’re traveling in the wet season or not, Sala Lodges offers a cosy retreat that will surely enhance your Siem Reap adventure. Highly recommended!
PPetrStayed for one night for a tour to the temples. Many restaurants and bars (PAB STREET in 2 minutes) within walking distance. Friendly staff who are ready to help with everything.
The interior is very authentic. Welcome drinks. Fruits are a nice bonus.
A little embarrassed that the air conditioner blows directly on the bed, but overall a great small hotel. We were unable to rate the breakfast, because we had to leave early for an excursion.
We have collected detailed feedback.
GGuest UserThe location of the hotel is excellent, around the corner is makara street, 10 minutes across the bridge and you are in the center (old town) . if you go right at makara street, five minutes and shop 7/11.nearby there is a local cafe right outside the hotel where for 18,000 riels you can eat 2 servings of Khmer very tasty soup. Yes, it's not very clean, and the squeamish won't like it, but the soup is really delicious and there were no problems with cooking.
Our room was deluxe, without a balcony, the furniture is not new, but everything works as it should. The shower is slightly leaking, but these are small things. Our windows faced the wall of the neighboring building, the windows were not washed, but there was nothing to admire there either.
The hotel is quiet, you can sleep in peace.
Disadvantages:
1. we had a room with a bunch of mosquitoes, the reception staff was very helpful and gave us mosquito spray, we sprayed it in the room and they did not disturb us at night.but you need to ventilate it well, the balloon smells strongly. We even started to suffocate. There may be fewer mosquitoes in the other room.
2. for me, the mattress seemed very soft, it creases under the weight, even though I weigh 70 kg. And then it doesn't straighten back up. Maybe it's on purpose, but it's more comfortable for me to sleep on a hard mattress.
Positive:
1. The hotel staff is as helpful as possible.
2. we were settled earlier than the scheduled time.
3. We helped you buy a SIM card and set it up.
4. They always smile and help. Thanks a lot for that.
We will return to this hotel again! Thank you for a pleasant time!
AAnonymous UserIts a good place and nearby the famous locations such as pub street/night market/National Museum.
The staffs are helpful, kind and friendly. Its a bit quite place.
There’s minimal cons such as no water heater (showering) but its fine. No hair conditioner too. Maybe you can consider?😁
Its a great stay! Love the scenery, location and staff.
SSteven Timothy RoweThe first night I was put in a room with an air conditioner that was running but never cooled. The next room had a family of very loud people that went most of the night. The staff is friendly and attentive, but obtrusive. I was moved to another room which had excellent air conditioning and was comfortable.
I have lived extensively in SE Asia and am familiar with the culture. However, always being asked,”Where are you going,” or “What are you doing?” Made me feel very uncomfortable. Simply tell guests that if they need anything or have any questions to please ask, instead of feeling interrogated each time I walked in and out of the hotel.
The girl that served in the dining room had a warm smile and was very kind and she always tried to serve well and did great. The days she was off, it was an uncomfortable awkward experience just trying to have a simple breakfast. Just trying to get salt or getting condiments so that I could eat my food while it was hot, was almost impossible.
As an exercise swimmer, the pool was very unclear at first. I asked if it could be cleaned and their was resistance to do so. Eventually it was cleaned and later it was much better.
I booked my room for two and my girlfriend was only able to be with me part of the time. One evening when I walked into reception with her, the guy was rude and disrespectful and interrogating us both. It was a very uncomfortable and unacceptable situation.
I had booked it for two weeks. Two days before I left, one evening, there was a rat running on the soffit near the ceiling. I didn’t complain about it because my stay was nearly finished and I don’t know what they would even try to do to remedy the situation.
The balconies are nice and overall it was quiet and peaceful.
GGuest UserPROS: Good service (Reception only, not the restaurant).
+ Quite location away from busy pub street but still quite close.
+ Great service from service manager Mr Ny and Mr Thom (I think that's his name)
+ Mr Ny was very professional and quick to apologise and offer solutions to whatever issues guests encountered.
+ Mr Thom smiled a lot and was very proactive in helping to carry luggage.
+ *Most* of the staff at reception greet you warmly when you leave or enter the hotel.
CONS:
- Limited food options nearby but that of course, is the tradeoff for being in a quieter location.
- Supposed to be a non-smoking room but room 208 had a lingering smoke smell. (Quickly changed to room 406 thanks to helpful Mr Ny).
- TV in both rooms were very unresponsive to the remote. You have to click several times and at a very particular angle just to change channels.
- Body soap and shampoo in large dispenser had a bad smell. It was obviously not changed for a long time.
- No hot water in room 406. It was however, quickly fixed by kind and helpful Mr Ny.
- American breakfast comes with 2 eggs. I asked if it has to be 2 eggs of the same type or can we choose 1 each of different types (e.g. scrambled and poached which I ordered). Waitress said both are fine. Order came and only had 1 scrambled egg. Raised the issue to another waitress and no apology, just said 'Oh, you want *another* poached egg' when I didn't even get 1 in the first place. Eventually, the missing poached egg did come but the experience was unpleasant.
May visit again if they fix the above issues.
TTian NatashaAt first glance this hotel seemed like a good place to stay until I checked the room and realized that there was bath towels or hand soap. Furthermore, the television doesn't work and the bidet hose and nearly flood the room. I called for help but no one was able to assist because it was too early. I checked out early because I was a bit overwhelmed. I think if you're lucky enough to get a good room then you might like it there.

Very Good
AAlberto911Pros: The reception is nice, try to manage everything for us professionally. Hotel is pretty.
Cons: Theres a cockrach near the toilet once we checkin. The parking system need improvements.
Advice to all travellers: do leave your car keys to the reception, as you will be blocking others.
Nneelie09The rooms are unique and the interior is very ”Cambodia feels”. Rooms are also spacious, comfortable and affordable. Love their balcony with pool view. There is no elevator so you may consider 1st floor rooms if you have luggages. Though they will help you carry your things. Location wise - can take tuktuk to go to places such as the night market and pub street.
The only downside: Swimming pool wasn't maintained well and it not so inviting to swim (hope they able to maintain it and maximize the good ambiance of the pool). Other items in the room are not well maintained such as the water kettle is rusty and the bathrobes got holes/tears. Love their lobby/receiving area too. It is very cozy area and love the scents!
Staff are very welcoming and very polite despite of the communication barrier. They are very patient. The phone in my original room wasn't working and asked for replacement since I may need the phone during my stay. I appreciate Trey for stepping out and settled the issue.
They have good food as well. They even packed my breakfast when one of my tour started at 0430hr.
They also offer complimentary foot massage and discounts for food/bar and spa. I was able to try their Khmer Massage at La Dear Spa on my last night. I recommend Vanra for the relaxing spa experience.
GGuest UserWe came here for the first part of our Cambodian holiday. The room is comfortable and the hotel was relatively quiet. I thought their breakfast was amazing and it was included with our stay so please don't miss it. Kimsinh was our main contact there and he was helpful the entire time. He helped organize tickets and dinner reservations. The hotel was undergoing renovations so we did not really enjoy that part of it however, We will look forward to checking out the changes when we come back
