My now husband and I stayed here for our wedding weekend. This special little hotel stole our hearts when we were looking at the area a year prior to our wedding. We imagined photos in front of that beautiful building and in the gorgeous and colorful common areas. It exceeded our expectations wholly. The staff was so friendly and considerate and so respectful and accommodating of us when we were prancing about with our photographers taking couples photos around the property. The scones in the morning and cookies at night were an adorable touch. Our room was so clean and the bed was spectacular. Overall it was an amazing experience. We can’t wait to come back on an anniversary in the future.

It was cozy, beautiful, and delicious. They had complimentary breakfast snacks. Quiche, Yogurt/Granola, fresh baked cookies in the evening and most importantly coffee. All easily accessible on the first and third floor. Highly recommend over any other place in Salem for your stay. The beds and pillows so soft!!!

We visited several gardens in the area and Salem was a great stop-over spot between two days in the gardens. I saw the great reviews of The Merchant on TripAdvisor and decided to give it a try. We were very pleased with this B and B in every way. Check-in was easy. Communication was clear. Parking was a breeze. The Merchant is within walking distance of anywhere you’d want to go in Salem. The photos on the website look just like our room. For an historic hotel, our room was quite spacious. The bed was comfortable with super soft sheets. The bathroom was lovely and decently sized as well. There’s a lot of nice natural light in our room. There are a couple of lovely common spaces. One is on the first floor with loads of comfortable seating and nice lighting. It’s like a living room/library. The other is on the second floor which is an outdoor terrace space. This also had comfortable seating and tables. In the morning there was a fresh-baked frittata that was delicious. But there were also plenty of yummy cold items available at any time, like overnight oats and yogurt and fruit in cute jars. There are also outrageously good and fresh chocolate chip cookies. One thing to note that I had not expected: there is not a bar at The Merchant. The common space on the first floor is great but if you want to drink alcohol, or other beverages, you need to bring your own. They have glasses and bottle openers just no liquor license.

Location in Downtown alone is clutch. Not to mention the history of the building ( you become quite the celebrity when walking out the front door being asked if you are staying there) as its history precedes it in all tours of Salem. The details in the design and finish of this old historic building are top tier. The parlor, porch, front lawn, staircases and rooms are refined yet old worldly. Breakfast of warm scones and various quiche or frittatas in the mid morning were delicious and fresh. Warm cookies in the afternoon are a detail not missed. The staff are attentive and helpful with any questions and making sure you are taken care of. I typically do not stay at the same locations when revisiting an area but I don’t think I can stay anywhere else when in Salem.

This hotel is absolutely stunning! The history of this building is amazing, and they have maintained the historical feel. The staff was so accommodating and very friendly. This hotel is at a perfect location. We were able to walk to all activities, museums, and restaurants we were interested in. If you are visiting Salem, this is the place to stay!

My favorite hotel experience ever… sounds like a lot to say but the access and amenities and spacious and stylistic rooms were a solid win.

The perfect blend of bed and breakfast with luxury hotel. My room was more than comfortable, there are only 11 rooms on the property - which is a renovated historic home in Downtown Salem. One of the few still remaining. So, you are steps away from everything one goes to Salem to see. Coffee and breakfast available at no charge every morning, snacks in the kitchen, and I ended my long days with tea and their fresh baked chocolate chip cookies. Truly amazing.
