Everything was more than perfect. We got a small room upgrade, a nice gesture. The hotel is well located, the rooms (apartment) are large, very clean and very well equipped. On the 4th floor no problem with the road below. Same with the swimming pool which is great. Bar available during the day. Barbecue evening every Wednesday evening is very cool. ALL the staff are super nice and competent. The SPA is perfect, Mariana is super attentive and super professional. Great stay at Macaris 👍👍

From the moment we arrived, this hotel exceeded our expectations. The staff were very warm and welcome throughout our stay. The rooms are modern and clean with separate air con in both lounge area and bedroom. Great to cool down and have a break from the mid day heat. Drinking cocktails in the rooftop bar watching the sunset was stunning. Bar staff were lovely. Breakfast was delicious with lots of variety to cater for all. We also managed to get a sun lounger around 9-9.30am so no need to get up early. School holidays may be different, but a small beach is directly opposite or more larger beaches a short bus ride away. It was leisurely 15-20 minute walk to the old town. Was nice walking to the fortress area which is surrounded by lots of local restaurants, authentic food, reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend this hotel if you like somewhere peaceful but still within walking distance to the centre.

Second time at the Macaris suites and spa having visited last year. As per previous review the Macaris is a great hotel, not to big and not to small. Facilities are good, pool area is a nice compact size and the hotel is kept immaculately clean. We stayed in a two bedroom superior suite with friends. The rooms have a smashing kitchen area, large terrace with great sea views and are really a self contained apartment! The rooms are cleaned each day and have new air conditioning systems. Food at the hotel is very good, extensive breakfast with everything from a cooked breakfast to fruit. We had a few lunches on the nice terrace at near the pool and again the food was excellent, really large portions, for example the club sandwich fed two really and all decent value. Massive bonus is the friendly staff who create a great atmosphere for you to relax and enjoy your holiday. Nothing is to much trouble, we asked if we could change our allocated room to the one we stayed in last year, reception accommodated this when able which was appreciated. As per previous review the Macaris maintains its high standards, go ahead and book!

We are here atm for two weeks, as I write this we’re on day 10 😭 Overall this is a decent hotel. BUT don’t come here in high season if you plan on spending some time by the pool. It’s 40 degrees daily so access to the pool is really important as it’s too hot for much else unfortunately. There are less than 40 sunbeds at the pool for a hotel with 44 apartments. That’s not even 1 per apartment and most people have come with families and some apartments have 2 bedrooms!! The pool is also too small and gets very busy with kids etc during the day with no room to properly swim (it’s 1.4m so a decent depth)! While, the quality of the pool area, sunbeds (teak with a thick padded faux leather cushion) is high and it’s clean, it’s simply not big enough for the hotel. We have resorted to going to the beach every day and hiring sunbeds resulting in spending more money than we should have needed to. We raised this with the hotel mgmt. On day 4 we had gone to the beach as there were no beds in the morning left, we came back at 5pm as my daughter wanted time in the pool and there were still no beds!! The receptionist offered to get us chairs to wait on for when a bed became free! Needless to say we didn’t do this and went back to our room and returned at 6pm when we were able to get beds. The management position is that it’s high season and what do we expect!!! She also suggested that we come at 8am when the pool opens to make sure we get a bed or come back at 6pm when people start to leave, this of course means dinner etc all happens very late. Today I was determined to get sunbeds for our family (only 3 of us) and I arrived down at 8.45 and got the last 3!!! There were towels on all the others with only 3 woman dotted around the pool closely guarding their haul of sunbeds!! Most of the people were no doubt either still in bed or in the breakfast area!! I sat and ate my breakfast on our sunbeds while my husband and daughter ate theirs in the breakfast room!!! Speaking of breakfast, if you’re looking for healthy options I would not rate it, it’s mostly sugar, carbs and fat, with the only decent protein source being eggs, hard boiled, fried (nope) or pre-made omelettes (alternating between veg or cheese) and egg white omelettes. There’s usually only one hot vegetable option per day and all days except for one they’ve been covered in oil no green veg. Our first day they had fried courgettes which were decent, but we’re in our second week and they haven’t reappeared. There is a section with three daily cold options that are sometimes healthy (Greek salad or a bean salad were the best) There are no seeds (I bought my own chia at the local supermarket), and limited prepared fruit (prepared melons) and the yoghurt has that cheap grainy taste. The cereals are all of the sugary variety, there’s an entire counter devoted to dried sugary fruits and jams etc. the breads are good with a variety of seeded and brown loaves and the usual sliced pan type bread for toa

This is a fabulous option for a family or a group of friends travelling together as there is plenty of room without having to book two rooms. As a family of four staying for 8 nights it was perfect for everyone. The two bedroom Executive Suite offered plenty of space and having the two toilets was very useful. The balcony area is huge! Comfortable furniture and amazing Sunset views. The staff were all very helpful and the breakfast was the highlight of the day for my son! The indoor pool made a nice change from the heat outside, since the air conditioning was very welcome. The ONLY thing I can fault was, for the amount of suites and guests staying there were not enough sunbeds. People were regularly going down before 8AM and reserving beds by putting their towels out but then disappearing back to their rooms or for breakfast. One very large group of several families reserved 12 beds every day so one day we had no beds and used the one on the balcony and lay on the floor. I am a Travel Agent and have already sent three clients to this property and will continue to recommend families and groups of friends.

We stayed for 11 nights in July as family of four. The hotel was fantastic, spotlessly clean with great facilities. The bar and restaurant staff were all lovely and couldn't do enough for you. We had a superior one bedroom suite, which was more than adequate. Our sons slept on the sofa bed in the living area. The suite was wonderfully air conditioned which at times was such a respite from the heat. Shutters could be utilised at night too to keep the room dark, and the mosquito screen doors were a great touch. A nice large balcony was utilised mainly at night too, with a dining area and two "comfy" chairs to relax in. The pool was great and only on certain days did you have to get up really early to get get a sunbed, most days you could stroll down after breakfast and secure one. The breakfast was also nice, a good selection of hot and cold, sweet and savoury. We went on two organised trips (organised by the hotel) which were superb and on one day took public transport (bus) to Heraklion and Knossos. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the beautiful old town of Rethymno, but be advised that there is a steep climb from the road to the hotel itself (about 66 steps). We would have loved to have been on a higher floor to get the views of the sunset but we were aware that the rooms are allocated on availabilty at the time. Also, despite indication that there is a gym on site, there isn't. But these are minor gripes. I would recommend Macaris, a proper hotel, ideal for families and anyone looking for value for money.

Lovely hotel. Well run with lovely staff. Spotless and large, well appointed rooms with big balconies and loads of storage. A good kitchen too so you could self cater very easily with a full oven, hon and fridge freezer. Supplied with tea, coffee and milk plus washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets. Breakfast good and drinks and meals in hotel reasonable. A 20 minute brisk walk into town. Might not suit all as there are fairly steep step/hill up from the main road and then more steps up to the door. The bonus is amazing sea views and fight across to the Fort. One slight niggle. The bathroom has a large whirlpool bath with an old fashioned shower attachment and no screen or curtain so unless you are very careful the whole bathroom gets soaked while you shower. Unlike other apartments we have stayed in the room is cleaners every day. Fresh towels and complimentary pool towels that can be changed every day. Pool area has sturdy sun beds and is very clean. Thank you Macaris for a lovely stay

If you are not looking for a beachfront hotel in the hustle and bustle (we weren't), then the Macaris has much to recommend. The rooms are large and comfortable with lovely views from large front terraces. The hotel is spotless throughout. The service provided by the friendly staff is excellent. The breakfast has plenty of variety (although the orange juice is from one of those machines which invariably serve up a watery excuse for real juice). So why only four stars? Well, apart from the orange juice problem (which is almost worth a star off by itself in my book, given the expectations set by the price of the hotel), some things are starting to look a little tired and forlorn. If the slightly worn fixtures in the rooms are excusable, the jacuzzi in the spa has tiles literally come off daily which is very poor maintenance. Still, if you are looking for a hotel a short (20 min) walk to the centre of the old Reythmno town (lots of nice restaurants), with a nice sea view (it is set in the hill above the sea front), you will surely not be disappointed! The hotel has no parking but we easily found a spot on the road outside. There is a main bus station and a good supermarket less than 10 minutes walk away.
