A small hotel with a history. Close to the castle. About 7-10 minutes on foot from the train station. Cleanliness. Decent Wi Fi. Helpful staff. I didn't try the breakfast, so cannot evaluate it.

I stayed at Hotel de la Balance for four nights while attending a conference. It is an authentic old world hotel, so don't stay here if you prefer North American style chain hotel facilities. The rooms and beds are small and are not luxurious, but they are clean and efficient. Reception is not 24 hours, but the desk staff are very courteous. Breakfast is served in a "ballroom" on the main floor. It's a continental breakfast buffet, but also with yoghurt, ham, cheese and hard boiled eggs and really excellent coffee. The hotel has parking, but it is easily within walking distance of the Montbeliard TER train station. The station and the shopping district are just on the other side of the chateau. There is also a shuttle from the station to the more distant TGV station. The only possible complaint is that the rooms can be cold, but this is simply because each room has its own heater that you need to turn on yourself. The hallways are lit with motion sensor lights, which again might seem strange for North Americans who are used to "always on" hotels. Energy is extremely expensive in France. I had a wonderful stay and would recommend it to anyone who wants to stay in an authentic French hotel.

Beautiful old building, especially the breakfast room. Good location in old town. Good breakfast for 14 € Bike room, E-bike battery has to be charged in that room (not allowed in bedrooms).

far too expensive for that poor service car park only for small & mid-size vehicles check in & out without empathy microscopic bathroom

First of all, we're located in city center, in a XVIth century building, that can't be modified. We're lucky to have a parking in a city, but are sorry that we're unable to modify its entry. However, it doesn't prevent large vehicles from entering (such as Audi Q7, Land Rover Defender) making some arrangements. Furthermore, several places are available in the street for free during the night, and a public parking is located 200m from our hotel. Finally, we're known to have friendly staff and welcoming people in our team, I'm a little bit surprised to read that we had "no empathy". We're keen on doing our maximum to satisfy our customer, we're so sorry to read that it was not the case during your stay. We'd be pleased to dicuss about it to know what happened to be qualified as "poor service". Best regards

This hotel was a discovery. Beautiful interior and welcoming, attentive service. The Breakfast room alone is worth a stay.

A hotel with charme and character! The best hotel I had on my bycicle trip so far. And I've seen many hotels so far. The service people were very helpful. I enjoyed my stay very much and would come to Montbeliard again only for a stay in this hotel. The rest of the town: nothing to remark!

nice staff, clean and well equipped room, excellent breakfast, located in the centre of the city which is worth seeing unfortunataly it is not possible to make a reservation for the parking which is behind the hotel, but places are limited, good for a stay with dogs

We hope to return in the spring time to enjoy the park of Pres la Rose and attend the many summer festivities, stroll through the city and discover the museums of this environment full of history as well as the restaurant of this charming hotel so welcoming.

A charming, old, historic building in the center of Montbeliard. Unfortunately, the hotel appears to have not been renovated in decades. The bathroom was a disaster: everything was wobbly and rusty. There was no hot water, and the Wi-Fi didn't work either. However, the room was clean and quiet! The breakfast was rather mediocre.

Looking at the photos, we either picked the wrong hotel or we picked the wrong number twice. However, we took the time to look through the photos and comments before booking and did not understand the huge gap between our stay and what we had read and seen on the website. First impression on arriving in the lobby: old hotel with faded paint, broken tiles, worn reception counter, low light which accentuated the dull and old-fashioned atmosphere. The elevator with its peeling carpet and peeling paint confirms the gloomy and old-fashioned tone of the reception. 1st room assigned: strong smell of pipes from the landing, faded paint, old and damaged furniture, stains on the walls. But the worst was the bathroom with its dilapidated shower square, dirty joints, old sink, tiny space. The culprit was therefore this shower room: the stale smell was the last straw. Changing rooms so as not to spend the night in apnea was quickly necessary. The 2nd room was unfortunately comparable to the first in its faded and old-fashioned appearance, not to mention the dark paint which reinforced the lack of light and the dull atmosphere that emanates from each part of the room and the hotel. The room was tiny with its bed almost touching the wall opposite. On the other hand, the bathroom could only be better than the first. It did not stink and at this stage, that is all we asked of it... having no more hope of finding the hotel of the photos and comments. It is so frustrating to find the exact opposite of what we think we have. And very clearly, from our experience, the 3 stars are not at all justified. Fortunately we were only spending one night... but in any case, the stay in Montbéliard started very badly.

Unfriendly welcome. Room 111 not very comfortable and cold. Bathroom and toilet to be reviewed: the shower screen seal is not waterproof, there is water everywhere. Mattress to be changed, TV a little small. Add curtains to the windows for privacy because there are many overlooked.
