"A memorable hotel, full of old-world charm, with courteous staff. The rooms are spacious and well-equipped. It's a landmark in Nikko, historically the first and most high-standard hotel. The only downside was the set dinner; while presented well, the ingredients and culinary skill weren't up to par, and the main course fish wasn't fresh."

"4.5 stars!  Property is older but extremely well maintained.  The corner western/Japanese rooms are spacious with two western beds and tatami area, single japanese bath and shower area and separate toilet area, mini fridge, tv, sitting area overlooking the river and table with four chairs as well as a massage chair!  Onsen area has both indoor and outdoor areas separate for men and women and a cold plunge as well as multiple hot baths.  Minus half a star for low staffing in the store/cafe areas (often no staff member to be found when kakigori desired), no in house lunch option and overly fatty meat on the 3rd night dinner (breakfast and dinner were LARGE and BEAUTIFUL but perhaps heavy on the yuba.  Also, shuttle to the train station is only at 10 and 11am and getting cabs is difficult.  However, would overwhelmingly recommend Nikko Senhime Monogatari!"

"It’s been such a nice stay, the room is large and clean, the traditional decor is perfectly introduced into the vibe of Nikko. The dinner and breakfast were perfectly served. Plus, they have a very nice souvenir shop on the first floor, bought a few socks there. Finally, the onsen was brilliant, also large room and a small onsen outside on a balcony. I regret staying only for one night."

"Everything was comfortable , maybe minor addition of a mirror instead of just one in the toilet. Also lighting could be brighter for certain areas as it gets quite dim in the evening . Dinner was perfect and they remembered my husband was a lefty and he wanted wasabi salt for his steak. That was a pleasant surprise, impeccable service and for the price we paid I think it’s a good value for Japan hotel standards"

"Nikko Hoshino Yado was, without a doubt, the most stunning chapter of our trip. It's much more than just a hotel; it's a living temple of Japanese aesthetics. The beauty of its garden is comparable to the renowned Ruriko-in – the same interplay of light and shadow, the same myriad shades of autumn leaves, but with an added sense of private immersion. Staying in a room with a view of the autumn foliage, the window frame becomes a canvas, with the ever-changing seasonal scenery as its most priceless artwork. The kaiseki dinners and breakfasts are not merely a feast for the taste buds but also a visual art. Each dish is like a delicate haiku, narrating the seasonal stories of Nikko through the finest ingredients of the season. Then, sinking into the indoor and outdoor *furo* (baths), letting the warm spring water embrace your body, you can gaze upon the autumn colors of the garden or the starlit night sky. This ambiance is simply perfect. This wasn't just a stay; it was a profound healing experience centered around Japanese beauty."

"Lovely hotel. The female receptionist is so kind. It is a little far from the station and main roads, but ok if you have a car. The shower and bed was excellent. It has free tea and coffee but you need to buy your own breakfast things from 7/11. Most outside breakfast places open at 9am or 10am and were nothing special. There is an excellent steak place 400m uphill from the restaurant, but you need the reception to make a booking. It is very expensive, but extremely high quality. The Italian downtown is fab. Try the carbonara, salad, gnocchi, duck and tiramisu. Next to it is an excellent sushi place called Komekichi Kouzushi which is great, but the Italian restaurant was the winner."

"Quiet and quiet place, there are supermarkets nearby, you can walk from Dongzhao Palace, the refrigerator has unlimited supply of Haagen-Dazs, but it will throw the guest dolls to the floor ⋯ This needs to be improved."

"Very old school ryokan run by very friendly who has been working there for many years. Your name will be displayed on the board next to the entrance of the ryokan to show that they were currently welcoming these guests staying at the ryokan! We stayed there for 2 nights with free parking and we didn’t have to drive anywhere until we checked out as the ryokan is within walking distance to the 3 major world heritage listed shrines including The Toshogu Palace. Avoid room 312 or 313 (which we stayed) which are the smallest rooms. Those rooms in the middle parts are bigger and more comfortable. Do ask for any room facing the back of the ryokan and avoid those facing the front where you only see car parks with coaches coming in the morning bringing tourists to the shrines. The onsite Onsen for ryokan guests, breakfasts and dinners are the highlights. You’d love the traditional Japanese meals served there and you won’t be hungry. Would I come back to this ryokan again? Yes definitely due to its location and friendly staff."

"Hotel location is good! Opposite is Shenqiao, about 10 minutes away from Toshogu Shrine and Erhuangshan Shrine. The hotel staff was polite, the rooms were not as old as expected, and they were neat. There is a tea room on each floor, with green tea, barley tea and hot water supply. Although the bath is not hot spring water, fatigue can be eliminated after bathing. Breakfast is simple and delicious. The only drawback is that you cannot store your luggage after check out. Attach a landscape photo outside the room."

"20 minutes walk uphill from the city. Really not a big deal but it seems some people are avoiding it for this reason. They have some shuttle to and from the city in the middle of the day. Green terrace restaurant just next to the hotel also have shuttle service back to the city if needed. Bathtub on the balcony is a nice addition (although it views the main parking lot) , but the public bath is nice enough that you won't really need it. No laundry room, service felt limited given the price."
