Awesome hotel located just 5-10mins walk behind FamilyMart ie opposite the TAKAYAMA NOHI Bus Stn & JR. The check in was easy & front desk staff was very professional ensuring the process was easy & swift! The hotel has a great & large Hot Spring and outdoor Rotenburo Onsen they’re segregated Men-Women. The onsen lobby has large lounge space to relax, free ice cream and a large full length glass window overlooking you may sit on chairs & coin operated massage chairs enjoying the beautiful town and fabulous snow capped mountains at the edge of the town in the day & sunrise!! The morning Japanese breakfast options are plentiful, staffs are helpful and friendly too! To walk to the Old Houses District perhaps only take 15mins leisure walk but gets really quiet & dark by 6PM in March!

The room was great – clean, neat, and well-designed. There's a small hot spring that looks nice, though I didn't get a chance to use it. The biggest plus was the evening happy hour with free-flowing sake, beer, and other drinks. The lobby atmosphere was also good, making it a very chill spot in a town without much nightlife. All the staff were very friendly. Highly recommend!

This was my second stay at the Washington Hotel in Takayama, and I'll start with the pros. It's incredibly convenient, located directly across from Takayama Station and the Nohi Bus Center. From the platform, it's less than a 50-meter walk to the hotel lobby, which is super handy. For travelers catching early buses to Shirakawa-go, Kamikochi, or Furukawa (especially recommended during cherry blossom season), this location is a huge advantage. All the nearby attractions are within walking distance, and the drugstore, restaurants, and specialty shops next to the hotel are among the last to close in Takayama. This is a big deal because many restaurants and shops in Takayama are quite particular, operating only four or five hours (or even just two or three) a day and often closing three or four days a week. Some restaurants even stop taking customers by 6 or 7 PM. We joked that at night, Takayama is full of 'hungry ghosts' wandering around! The hotel's toothbrushes are still the 'old style' and are much better than those in many other hotels. The triple room layout was well-designed and felt spacious when organized properly. The shower had good pressure and was very comfortable. What needs improvement is the shower curtain – it's too thin, so the strong shower spray easily splashes outside the tub. The breakfast is only a Japanese set meal. I tried it one day, and the taste was just so-so. I skipped it the second day, and it was still the same on the third, so I decided not to eat it again. The breakfast options are too limited; it looks good but doesn't taste great. Other hotel services were still good. The triple room had two trash cans, which shows thoughtful attention to detail. The overall bathroom facilities felt a bit old, and the extractor fan wasn't very powerful... Oh, and the hotel offers a hot spring ♨️ with pretty long opening hours, but I didn't get to try it, so I can't comment. All in all, for this price, being able to stay in such an extremely convenient, central location near the station (and commercial center) is definitely worth it. On a side note, I'm not sure if it's due to an economic downturn or the off-season, but Shirakawa-go and Takayama were noticeably less fun, less interesting to explore, and had fewer good shopping and dining options than my previous two visits. 'Travel early!' is truly not an empty phrase.

The hotel is conveniently located just across the street from the Takayama Train Station and Takayama Nohi Bus Terminal, with a Family Mart right on the first floor. It is within easy walking distance of most major attractions. While the staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful—even offering luggage storage after checkout—the facilities are quite dated. The rooms still use traditional keys for access and are on the smaller side, making them better suited for single travelers. My main issues were the bed, which was quite firm, and the air conditioning, which didn't cool the room sufficiently, forcing me to keep the window open.

Many other reviews have already covered the good points: the drum-beating welcome at check-in offers a wonderful sense of ceremony, and they even helped me carry my luggage to the bus stop steps when I left. There are so many instances of truly authentic Japanese service that I struggled with my rating, honestly giving them a higher score than I initially intended (this sentence is a bit awkward). Now for the things I wasn't happy with: 1. One of the main reasons I booked this place was for the natural hot springs, but the bathing area lacked privacy compared to Dormy Inn hotels. It felt more like a family guesthouse I've stayed in, where the bathing and showering areas are all open and visible. 2. On two separate evenings, I encountered staff cleaning the public bath. I've stayed at various hot spring hotels, big and small, and usually, this kind of work is done when there are no guests around, right? The next day, I even saw an employee using the small towels provided for guests to wipe down the sinks... I was speechless. Even if it's standard practice, they should at least do it discreetly, away from guests! 3. This is the most frustrating point: At check-in, I had already indicated that I didn't need room cleaning or entry into my room. Yet, on the second evening, they knocked on the door and, without waiting for me to open it, directly unlocked my room with a key. I had already explained that the futon was set up yesterday and wasn't needed today, but they still rushed into the room to check... The environment, location, front desk staff, and driver were all excellent. I just hope the hotel's overall management can improve.

Arriving in Takayama by highway bus, I chose to stay at the same Residence Hotel as my previous visit. It's incredibly convenient, located just a left turn from the Nohi Bus Terminal exit, making it zero distance from both the bus and JR stations. The luxury suite is huge, featuring a balcony, four beds, and a fully equipped kitchen with pots, pans, a microwave, and a large refrigerator. The washing machine with a dryer was an absolute lifesaver. Even better, all the drinks in the fridge were complimentary, including two 2L bottles of mineral water, beer, sake, green tea, and cola. Basic condiments like salt, soy sauce, pepper, and cooking oil were also provided. There's a supermarket right next door, perfect for buying Hida beef and cooking up a feast.

This was one of my best stays in Japan. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming, and the price was very affordable. The hotel is very conveniently located, only about a 2-minute walk from both the train station and the bus station. The lobby is spacious and beautifully designed, and there is also a comfortable dining area where guests can enjoy complimentary coffee in the afternoon. The room I received was quite spacious by Japanese standards. It had two super single beds and an L-shaped couch, with plenty of space to open my suitcase easily. The bathroom was also larger than those in my previous hotels, with a full-size bathtub which made it very comfortable. It’s a shame that I only stayed for one night. I definitely should have stayed longer because the room was so comfortable. Thank you Chisun Grand Takayama for your wonderful hospitality. I will definitely come back again. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Takayama.

Staying at Hostel Miyagawa by Murasaki Ryokan was truly one of the highlights of my trip — an unforgettable experience that beautifully blended comfort, tradition, and hospitality. From the moment I arrived, I was welcomed into a warm, peaceful atmosphere that reflected the essence of a traditional Japanese ryokan. The design of the space is charming and authentic, with thoughtful touches that bring out the beauty of Japanese culture. Everything from the tatami rooms to the meticulously clean facilities made the stay incredibly comfortable. What truly made it special, though, was the feeling of calm and connection to local traditions that this place offers. It’s more than just a place to sleep — it’s a cultural experience in itself. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to immerse themselves in an authentic and beautiful ryokan stay.

Location: About a 10-minute walk from Kyoto Station, the location is great (there's even a direct airport line from Osaka Kansai Airport). Cleanliness: Very clean, with bidets everywhere – very comforting. I really like Japan's integrated bathrooms. Facilities: It's quite new. Being able to screen mirror was a pleasant surprise. Comfort: If there are two people, I recommend booking a twin room. Japanese double beds are too small and cramped. It's tiny but has everything, though overall it felt a bit cramped. The design is quite thoughtful, and there are bedside lamps. Service: Japanese hotels are usually known for their service, but there was absolutely none here. 1. Check-in and check-out are both self-service (I wonder what the four or five staff members at the front desk actually do – no wonder Japan's job market is good and not competitive). 2. I left something at the hotel this time. It took several hours for them to reply to my online message and email, and no one answered the phone (it reminded me of Mu Xin's poem, 'In the past, the days passed slowly, cars and mail were slow, one only loved one person in a lifetime' – tsk tsk tsk).

SSuzhiなrenEvery year at the end of the year, I visit Takayama, mainly to see the snow scenery in Shirakawa-go, and this hotel has pretty much become my go-to choice. What I love most is the service; the staff are all incredibly warm and attentive, making for a very comfortable stay. Plus, you can book a private onsen, which is wonderfully quiet and relaxing – a real highlight of the trip. Last year, the room I stayed in had a beautiful Japanese tatami area, which really added to the traditional Japanese ambiance. It's a shame I couldn't book that room type this time; it seems they no longer have it, which is a bit disappointing. Nevertheless, the overall experience was still excellent, and I'll likely choose to stay here again next time I'm in Takayama.

MMike IgOur stay at Ryokan Gizan was a truly memorable experience. This is a traditionally built and decorated Japanese ryokan, with tatami floors, sliding doors, and an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a “must-visit” if you’re looking to experience traditional Japanese accommodation — even a short stay of 2–3 nights is enough to make it special. The ryokan is quite old, which actually adds to its authentic charm, though it might feel a bit less comfortable for more demanding guests. That said, it’s very well maintained and everything is clean and thoughtfully arranged. The onsen facilities were excellent — one public bath and four private ones that you can use freely. After long days of exploring, it was a real treat. We highly recommend booking with the traditional dinner included. The meals were a highlight: we had Yakiniku the first night and Shabu-shabu the second, both featuring fresh, generous portions of delicious food. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese set — beautifully presented and made with care, though not quite to our personal taste. The location is stunning — surrounded by mountains, rivers, and blossoming trees. It feels peaceful and remote. Just note that amenities like ATMs or grocery stores are limited nearby. However, it’s well connected by bus (just a 3-minute walk from the ryokan), which can take you to Kamikochi or the terminals at Takayama and Hirayu Onsen. Buses run about once an hour, so it’s quite manageable. Overall, a fantastic stay — relaxing, unique, and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Japan.

GGuest UserThis hotel is super close to Hirayu Onsen bus station, just a few minutes' walk away. It's a pretty big place. After checking in, you swap your shoes for slippers, and you can wear the provided yukata (Japanese robes) throughout the entire hot spring hotel. To avoid lugging our luggage up and down, we opted for a slightly more expensive Western-style standard room in the main building. They have an outdoor onsen, and the men's and women's baths switch daily. After a relaxing soak, there's free ice cream available. We had dinner and breakfast included, both buffet style, but the taste was just so-so.
