This temple stay is amazing. Vegetarian breakfast and dinner was great. The morning prayer and fire ritual was great to take part in. They also offered an afternoon mediation tutorial. There was a night tour for the cemetery, however I did not take part. It was a little concerning that the English tour was ¥1000 yen more than the Japanese tour. Overall I highly recommend this place.

The temple offers a unique stay experience with many items to experience. The receptionist can speak English. The location is great. But the soundproofing of the room is very poor, you can hear the noise from next door at night.

We reserved a one night stay at Ekoin after reading so many fantastic reviews. The facility lodging part was amazing ($598) as we splurged for the suite with private Onsen, private bathroom, private patio and more than 50 square meters or traditional tatami room. The vegan cuisine was more interesting than good to our taste but it feeds you well. The ceremonies were great only if they did not decided to videotape the entire day and put cameras in our nose at all time. I had to stand up and go to see the videotapers and ask them to stop . For us, it was a great time to meditate and immerge in the culture. At that time, we felt like the center of a reality TV show and that was decreasing our experience by 50%. Those ceremonies should be NO CAMERA, NO CELLPHONE...you don't visit those temple like or visit a zoo so refrain from having camera and you temple refrain from having professional video taper with camera in the nose of the pilgrims. We don't come for this.

We absolutely loved our 2 night temple stay, we travelled with our disabled son and the monks could not have been more kind or accommodating. We wore socks rather than slippers, found the futons excellent and the food was incredible (even though we didn’t know what we were eating). There was a touristy element ( can pay for prayer sticks, tours etc) but they do explain that the services and rituals are part of their daily life which we were grateful to experience. Overall an incredible abs very special experience

The accommodation is a temple, which is a luxury. These are Japanese-style rooms. In our case, the bathroom is shared. There are enough toilets and a common bathing area, a bit small, which can be used with tattoos. Our reservation included breakfast and dinner in the room, both meals are vegetarian. We didn't know what some things were, but everything was good. For me, the weak point is that I thought there would be a bit more interaction with the monks, in the sense that you would share spaces. The monks attend to your needs but nothing more. The reservation included a "calligraphy workshop" which consists of giving you a piece of paper so that you can copy the symbols by yourself in the room. Also an introduction to meditation, which there were too many people. Participation in the morning service and the fire rite is something that they do exclusively for the people staying there. There are two monks who do the service and they direct you, since the rest of the monks do not participate. In other countries I have been allowed to observe the ritual they perform from the back rows, but this is not the case here. I think it is too tourist-oriented.

The place is strictly vegan and primarily soy, very few real vegetables, if any! I'm lucky I brought food for myself but I didn't bring enough. It's run by young men. Bring your own slippers as their shoes are large and didn't stay on going up or down stairs. The stairs are steep. The doors opening and closing are loud and wake you up. The fire ceremony was beautiful but the drum was earsplittingly loud and there was not enough ventilation. The gas heater in the room has no ventilation and smells like gas. They have no extra blankets. I see the prices are very high. For this I should have booked a better place. Oh,! Also the futon was very old and lumpy. Pillow al as o uncomfortable. This is my second temple stay and a huge step down from the kind people in Magome. A travel agent booked this for me but there was no disclosure on the vegan and other details. It was a 2.5 hr private car ride from Kyoto and will be 2 HR to Osaka station. The whole thing must have easily exceed $800. The bathroom down the hall had no door, only on the toilet section.

The monks do a really nice job here. They have a program where you can do a meditation around 4:30pm, dinner, and then a night tour of the cemetery. In the morning you can participate in the morning prayers, a fire ritual, and then have breakfast. The room was great, and the service is next level. The monks serve the food in your room and they come in to move the table and put our your beds and then in the morning they come in to put everything away. And my friend and I have slept in the traditional Japanese bedding before and had more Western beds during this trip, but both commented later that this night was probably the best sleep both of us had the whole trip. It was super quiet, and sometimes simple technology is better. The heat is a space heater and we were able to control the temperature in a our room really easily that way.
