The Mercure is centrally located 5 mins walk from the centre of the city and the Cathedral. Our room on the third floor was clean and serviceable although some of the furniture had seen better days. Car parking is available and costs £15 per day which is cheaper than the public car parking across the road. Families note, pool costs £10/adult. (Children free)

kids crying at the breakfast and parenting doing nothing
the rooms need more cleaning, too much dust
reception service poor

Lovely experience having tried the Rougemont. Lovely pool, polite staff. Didn’t try the food but it smelled incredible.
Thanks for a top class stay.

Good hotel located centrally in Exeter. Checkin was swift. Room looked recently refurbished and was clean and well equipped. Service at the bar was OK. Very limited daytime menu and hours very short for evening food. Breakfast was adequate. Neither wowed.

We chose this hotel because our children love to swim, so we decided to treat ourselves to this nice hotel as it was our older daughter's birthday. It was only on arrival that we found out that hotel guests are charged £10 per adult, per swim, to use the pool! (Kids were free with a paying adult, but not allowed to go in by themselves). I have never stayed in a hotel where guests are charged for the pool before. The kids were disappointed as they had wanted to swim twice a day, but at £20 per swim for the family, that wasn't going to happen! They were also disappointed not to be allowed to use the jacuzzi, which was only bath temperature. The rooms were comfortable enough, although the air conditioning didn't work and the windows didn't open, so it was quite stuffy and hot, especially after showering. Conditioner was not provided in the room, which surprised me (just shampoo and body wash). You had to ask for it at reception. We opted not to have breakfast at the hotel as we didn't feel it would be good value for money based on the poor reviews (It would have been £60 extra per day for our family of 4). We went out to the excellent Chandos deli nearby instead, for pastries and coffee. The hotel's location is great, right next to the Roman Wall and really close to the cathedral green. But overall this felt like a hotel trying to cut costs wherever possible.

Fantastic hotel 5 star ⭐️ had a wonderful one night stay to get away. Alice on reception was wonderful very friendly & professional she made our stay even more special, nothing was too much trouble for her. She is an asset to your hotel chain and I hope she gets recognised for her hard work & excellent customer service. She shines bright above & beyond. All the staff at the hotel were amazing and very friendly. Room was fabulous & breakfast very tasty! Thank you we will ge back

We have stayed at this hotel many times in the past but at our recent stay standards had most certainly dropped. The hotel is now very tired and in desperate need of redecoration and refurbishment. Our room had damage to all furniture. Drawers not opening, chips on units, curtains not attached to the rail in parts, dirty carpet, stained chairs, chipped paintwork on all walls and doors. The bathroom had a spot light hanging out of the ceiling, badly chipped/damaged surfaces and part of the shower/bath tap was missing. The windows have been screwed shut with unsightly pieces of wood. This hasn't really been done for a safely reason as the windows all have retainers on them so they don't open too far, but more for the reason that the wood of the windows is now very rotten and I wouldn't trust them not to fall out without the extra wood and screws holding them together. Even the outside window ledges are crumbling away. There is air conditioning but the instructions/diagram on the wall did not match the complicated control panel that you have in front of you. Therefore it was impossible to operate. Our room was also very dusty which I did report to reception. Check-in was not good. Nothing was explained to us. I had to go back to reception later to find out about dinner timings and also to find out about the gym and pool. I was very shocked to find out that there was an extra cost of £10 per person for residents of the hotel to use the pool. This had never been the case in the past. In the restaurant there are stains down many of the walls where food has been spilt and not cleaned up. As a positive, the food we ate in the restaurant/bar was very good. Also all restaurant and bar staff that we encountered were very cheerful and helpful.

We have stayed at this hotel many times, but it really needs better maintenance. Our privilege room had frayed curtains and carpet, which was bubbled up ( a potential trip hazard) and thread bare. The two bed mattresses weren't zipped together properly, so it had an annoying gap between us and the bed nearest the window was really noisy/squeaky every time you moved. The hotel has a good location and staff are welcoming but it needs some tlc.
