"We had a really lovely stay at Links House, our first and I very much hope not our last. The house itself is a very handsome former manse in a beautiful 'frontline' setting. Our room was very large with a comfortable seating area with armchairs which we put to good use watching Scotland gub England at Murrayfield on the TV. (This was made even more enjoyable savouring the complimentary Auld Fashioned cocktails and a bottle of champers my husband had the foresight to have chilling in the room.) Dinner in Mara was superbly cooked and we were appreciative of the chef's flexibility in catering to my husband's requirements. Following dinner we sat in one of the sitting rooms and enjoyed the company of fellow guests. With fires lit and the friendly and not over formal attention of the team at Links, this kind encouragement of conversation is one of the memorable aspects of our stay. Of course, there are corners if you would just like your own company of to enjoy the books and paintings throughout the house, but we liked the convivial atmosphere and were happy to resume our chat the following evening! I think that is the magic of this place: how it makes you feel. Yes, the hotel is beautiful; the room had every comfort; the bathroom was huge with gorgeous Scottish toiletries; the breakfasts were plentiful and appealing. But it is how we felt before during and after our stay that will bring us back one day."

Dornoch Pods

"The location was fantastic, very close to the beautiful beach and a choice of scenic walks into the charming town. The pods have great views and are set on a very peaceful plot. The sauna and hot tub were great and added to the chilled vibe of our stay. The pods themselves are high spec and very spacious and comfortable, especially the beds. We had a fabulous stay and will definitely be back. A great find."

"Having stopped here a couple of times when under the previous owner I thought that booking again would be a wise idea. How wrong could I be. I booked with them in May for a stay on the 3rd and 4th July. We are playing at Dornoch in an open on the 4th. Only when I contacted them with a week to go to make sure all was ok and even if we could possibly stay on the Sunday night as well, have they told us the room we had booked is now no longer available as it is being used for staff accommodation. We were originally going to book the family room but changed to the apartment as that was where I had stopped before. They then told me that they no longer have suitable accommodation for us. I don’t Know if they were ever going to tell me or whether we could have turned up on Friday to then be told we had no where to stay. Surely common decency would have meant a call to us to let us know in advance. All we got was I know you will be frustrated but try other hotels or B&B’s. This for a weekend when 140 golfers are going to be in town. Totally unacceptable in my opinion and I would advise anyone not to book as obviously your booking isn’t guaranteed and you will be let down if they change their mind."

"The double room we had was absolutely fine for one night. Breakfast fry up was good they also had cereals for you to choose from. My only negative was the towels could do with being upgraded as they are very small and thin."

Dornoch Castle Hotel ★★★

"OK this was the most expensive stop on our trip but it was worth every penny. Lovely hotel excellent room fantastic breakfast and its own little distillery. There were even whiskey tasters in the room and a whiskey bar downstairs. The staff were so friendly and we even had a chat with "mini tour" (because it is so tiny) with the master distiller. Excellent, Excellent."
