Hyatt Place des Moines Downtown

This is a truly awful hotel. Dated. Dirty (the bed comforters had dark stains on them, there was visible mold on the shower curtains and the carpeted floor was sticky). Over-priced (as much as the full-service Marriott a block away and parking was a lot more). With some of the rudest staff we've ever encountered. The adjacent rooms we reserved (we wanted to be next to our children) weren't available when we checked in. We received other rooms for the night but the desk attendant said we could have a room next to our room the next day, as soon as the existing guest checked out and the room was cleaned. We kept checking back all day. They said they were cleaning it and would bring the key to us. Then, after several hours, the manager Pam overruled the front desk attendant and said she didn't want to clean our childrens' room too so she wouldn't move then to the room they said we could have. But it didn't stop there. When we complained, she said (a) our family could leave if we didn't like it and (b) we could write corporate but they wouldn't do anything.

Worst hotel experience in at least a decade. I could overlook the stained comforter, sticky carpet, missing remote control, and too-narrow garage parking spaces. I can’t overlook Pam (manager) overruling her staff’s decision to give us the (adjacent) rooms we’d reserved once they became available (they weren’t available the day we checked in even though we reserved them in advance) because she didn’t want to clean the one room we’d be vacating. She told my wife our family could leave if we didn’t like it. She told my wife she could write to corporate because corporate didn’t care and wouldn’t do anything. I’ve been to good Hyatt hotels. This isn’t one of them. The Marriott up the street—where others in our party stayed—is a lot cleaner with more amenities and a friendlier staff.

Room and bed were great. Pillows are extremely fluffy though I prefer a little more substance. Luckily, I was traveling alone so I was able to use all 4 pillows and didn't have to call for additional. Enjoy the free breakfast, makes mornings convenient. Wifi seems to be worse the further from the elevator lobby your room is. I was on a north facing room so cell service was adequate to use phone. Helpful staff and clean rooms.

The Hyatt Place Des Moines is a great option. The location is as good as one can expect if you are trying to stay downtown. It is connected to the skywalk which leads direclty to the convention center and various downtown businesses and hotels. Our main issue with this property was the quality of the wifi- it was difficult to be productive anywhere in the building as the internet was quite slow and would disconnect on occasion. Over the course of a week's stay, that became a point of frustration. The staff tried to be helpful and were apologetic, but ultimately were unable to help with this issue.

The location can’t be beat and having a garage that allows unlimited access for 1 charge per day is great. Nice breakfast buffet and staff was friendly and helpful. The room, while large, was very dated. The shower had old, stained grout and it was a cramped area with the toilet. The curtains did not fully close, so the morning sun filtered right in. The coffee in the room was awful- but you could easily get coffee downstairs.

Probably one of the grossest rooms I’ve stayed in at a hotel. Stained towels, toothpaste on the toilet seat, stains on carpet, mold and rust in the shower. The wood furniture had gouges, scratches, and chunks missing. The room smelled musty and damp. My parents in another room did not have hot water working. Very overpriced for the condition of the rooms.
