I suppose the charm of Atami is that the whole area is a little bit 'dated' as far as a resort goes, and this hotel definitely aligns with that - it seems like a place that was once great and is now kind of just rolling along bringing in what money it can.
The food is serviceable but totally uninspired - an upscale cafeteria masquerading as something better than it is with 'chefs' wearing their whites. The entire dining room constantly smells of fryer oil from the tempura - which they still make and keep stock of in such large quantities that it is never fresh and crispy anyways (especially the shrimp, which has not been sufficiently dried before battering). The remaining hot dishes are very disappointing both in terms of variety and overall flavor. The sushi and sashimi is the standout of the food, although it too is very basic - not anything that will blow your mind, but acceptably tasty and reasonably fresh (although on our second night everything tasted a bit soapy/bleachy). As a westerner you will be very disappointed by the breakfast, although that's a 'me' problem rather than a hotel problem per se.
The spa facilities are nice but a bit dated - be careful in your selection of both time and location unless you want to be surrounded with many loud (mostly Chinese) children. Private spas are available and are quite nice, although again dated. Nonetheless at around 60 USD for an hour the price is good for the privacy, especially as a westerner who is otherwise subject to quite a bit of staring at this mostly local and Chinese spa.
We stayed in a deluxe king room, which was spacious with an enormous and comfortable bed, and a (For japan) reasonably sized tub. Room and desk service was good.
The hotel is a bit off the beaten path but has regular free shuttles to/from Atami station, which is where the main tourist streets for shopping etc can be found. Highly suggest checking out Golden Eye for some excellent Ramen.

Hotel New Akao is a huge hotel. It was built quite many many years ago, we stayed at the older wing, so the room tends to be oldish, but well maintained and super clean. For the price we paid, one would expect 5 star facilities, at least a gym for morning workouts, but they did not have that. However, the meals (Dinner & breakfast) provided with the price is fantastic and wide spread. I guess its a onsen hotel so people tend to go there just for the hotel onsen which is great and nice. We do love the big buffet spread of meals. The room is old, if you prefer the rustic feel. There are no convenient store nearby so when it comes to hunger, you only have vending machine beer. We actually expected to have free flow of snacks and beer but it is only limited to very off peak timing when most people are out for their day trips. Again, we feel that the hefty price tag should at least provide that free beer, drinks and snacks all day and all night. Overall, we still love the experience staying in the hotel. A word of advice - avoid peak seasons like New Year, you will expect to queue up for meals :)

Always wanted to stay here
Rooms have a view over the ocean and the hot baths between the two hotels ha e superb views as well
The buffet room also is right by the water but feels like a cavern in the ocean
Visually stunning
Some of the rooms need updating
I still think the hotel on the ocean side is the place to stay

Amazing experience!
We got picked up at Atami Station in a free shuttle.
The Hotel is located on a cliff, with stunning views of both the ocean and the city.
The Hotel has a very interesting design, it looks kind of old fashioned but in a grand, fun way.
We stayed in a Japanese style room, was fine.
The 3 separate onsen baths were amazing. Great views, Sauna was good too.
Food was a buffet, but it was freshly made and high quality.
We were very happy with the hotel and would definitely recommend it

The outdoor onsens were stunning but very busy. Free beverages until 5pm. The 2 annex buildings are connected so you don’t have to walk outside. The hotel is very grand. Unfortunately our room was right next to the elevator so I got woken up by elevator noise from 5am and couldnt fall asleep again because of the heavy use of the elevators. Rooms had stunning views of cliffs and the sea

The hotel was recommended by a local friend, and it is very cost-effective. Double occupancy, including breakfast and dinner (both buffet), about 1600 per day, which is very cheap in Japan. The room is 7.5 tatami in size, and the tatami is usually folded up, so it doesn't feel too small, facing the sea. The room is relatively old, with few charging ports, and you can only unplug the refrigerator. The hotel has three hot springs, with different opening hours and different views. I like the 15th floor the most. This one opens at 5 am, and there is a huge glass indoors to look directly at the sea. There is a three-tiered pool outdoors, facing due east, where you can soak in the soup and watch the sunrise. The hotel restaurant is divided into time periods for dining. It is huge and there are many people, but the Japanese are of high quality, and it is not noisy. The food is also good. The seafood sashimi and freshly fried tempura for dinner, I ate a lot. The hotel is halfway up the mountain, and there is a shuttle bus to Atami Station. It seems that there are also many activities, but I didn't experience it even if I was in a hurry.

The hotel is built by the sea, and you can enjoy the sea view from the room. The hotel has multiple hot springs♨️ and swimming pools. The restaurant is super large, and the dinner and breakfast are also very rich.
