History of Kadayawan Festival

The roots of Kadayawan can be traced to thanksgiving traditions practiced by communities around Mount Apo, where people expressed gratitude for successful harvests and the blessings of nature.

During the 1970s, Davao City also began organizing celebrations that highlighted indigenous rituals, music and traditions.

In 1987, the celebration became known as Apo Duwaling, referring to three well-known symbols of Davao:

  • Apo for Mount Apo
  • Du for durian
  • Waling for the waling-waling orchid

The celebration was renamed Kadayawan in 1988.

Today, the festival continues to highlight the traditions of Davao's 11 ethnolinguistic groups:

  • Ata
  • Bagobo Klata
  • Bagobo Tagabawa
  • Matigsalug
  • Obu Manuvu
  • Kagan
  • Iranun
  • Maguindanaon
  • Maranao
  • Sama

For the 3rd time booking in Dusit Thani to celebrate a bday, We bought foods and small lechon to be consumed inside our room, but this time around they asked us a corkage of p5,000 for lechon, i told them that we will consume the food inside d room not in the restaurant but insisted us to pay the corkage fee. I read their room policy, only DURIAN food is not allowed to carry, other than that we assumed its ok, because it was not our 1st time to bring lechon. Asking for a corkage fee but did not even give a receipt.

The hotel is located right on the beach, but swimming isn't allowed there. The grounds are large and well-lit in the evenings. Breakfast is a buffet. There isn't a water cooler on site; they provide two complimentary bottles per day, but the staff were kind enough to give us two extra small bottles late at night when nearby shops were closed. Our room had a strong musty smell, the air conditioning worked, but overall, the room was a bit tired.

I had a wonderful 4-day stay at Acacia Hotel Davao, and it truly exceeded my expectations. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel welcomed with their warm hospitality and attentive service. The room was clean, spacious, and very comfortable, perfect for relaxing after a long day. The hotel facilities were well-maintained, and everything felt organized and guest-friendly. I especially appreciated the peaceful atmosphere, which made my stay even more enjoyable. The food was also excellent, with a good variety of choices that catered to different tastes. Overall, my experience was outstanding, and I would definitely give Acacia Hotel Davao a 5-star rating. At first check-in we had an issue with our room. The room looked very old and dated the air-conditioning wasn’t working and the Wi-Fi was non-existent. I raised a complaint to 8 am the next morning. It took two 8 pm to follow the same day for them to rectify this and move as to another room. This room was outstanding. The air-conditioning was working. It was modern better looking not as tight as the other room, there was room either side of the bed to get in as the other room you could only get in one side of the bed as the bed was against the wall so this new room was a lot better. The only issue with the Hotel was the Wi-Fi was extremely rubbish non-existent would be the better word but this was the only issue that we had in our day. Everything else was perfect from the cleanliness to the staff and the buffet breakfast was acceptable just not much choice for the Western pallet but for a Filipino it was okay

I had a fantastic stay at Park Inn by Radisson Davao! The location is unbeatable-having a direct bridge to SM Lanang Premier made shopping and dining so convenient. The rooms are modern, vibrant, and very clean, with a bed that's incredibly comfortable. A huge shoutout to the staff who were helpful from check-in to check-out. We stayed at Crown Regency Residences for a week, and overall it was a great choice—especially for budget travelers with kids. One of the biggest highlights was the unlimited pool access until 10 PM every day, which our family really enjoyed. It made a huge difference in keeping the kids entertained without needing to go out and spend extra. The place offers hotel-like service, and the staff were consistently helpful and accommodating throughout our stay. While the building itself does show its age and could use some updates, it didn’t take away from the overall experience. If you’re traveling as a family and looking for something affordable with good amenities, this is definitely a place worth considering. Despite its older appearance, I would still choose to stay here again for a budget-friendly family trip.

We stayed at Red Planet Davao for 2 nights. Overall, the hotel room was clean, and we appreciated how nice and accommodating the front desk staff were during check-in. The location and cleanliness made our stay comfortable. However, we had one issue during our first night. I had a sudden gout flare-up when we arrived, and the pain became unbearable to the point that I couldn’t walk. My partner had to go down to buy medicine and dinner for us. Since only one key card was given at check-in (which is also needed to keep the room power and aircon on), he asked the front desk for another key. Unfortunately, they said only the person whose name was under the booking could request it. Even after explaining that I could not walk due to a health issue, they still required my signature first. He had to go back upstairs, get the paper signed, and then return downstairs again. In an urgent situation, this process felt very time-consuming and frustrating. My suggestion for improvement would be to proactively offer two key cards when two guests are checking in, instead of waiting for guests to request it. Also, in urgent health-related situations, I hope the staff can show more flexibility and understanding. Despite this experience, the room itself was clean and the staff were polite. With better handling of situations like this, the guest experience would be much better.

Cons: The location of this small inn is perfect, it’s off the main road but not too far from it, accessible to anywhere in the city; the food was very good, the inn employees were respectful and helpful. The single room was a good size with clean beddings, clean towels, bathroom was clean with hot and cold shower. Cons: the inn does not provide toiletries so you have to bring your own, no change of bedding or towels for the 3 days I stayed, no room cleaning, absolutely no hooks to hang towels or clothes, food is served only in the room, no dining area or recreation room, no elevator but it’s only 3 stories. All in all, if you only need a clean safe place to stay this is the best option at the best price and location.

My kids are excited for the swimming pool because they see it on the post of the hotel that they have it but when we ask for where the pool is to go for swimming they say it's not available and said under maintenance. We don't know if they don't like us to use it because we saw the pool and it's ok. They are disappointed. Check in again probably not? maybe if they improve their service. Our stay at the hotel was excellent. We were looking for an affordable location with a conducive atmosphere for studying, and it delivered. While it's located on a street that experiences heavy afternoon traffic, this ironically worked in our favor, since the limited vehicle access made the area surprisingly quiet. The receptionist and staff were warm, accommodating, and handled all our inquiries efficiently. As for the room, I actually appreciated the analog aircon, since the steady noise helped me focus. There were a few areas for improvement, however. The toiletries were limited to a bar of soap (shampoo and toothpaste would've been a nice addition), and the analog TV had a weak signal and took up space. One major plus was the reception area, which offered ample lighting and table spaces for studying. The elevator was convenient, though note that it's turned off late at night. Overall, a highly recommended stay for students or budget travelers looking for focus and quiet.

The Good Stuff: • Unbeatable Location & Easy to Find: The absolute best part about this hotel is how convenient it is. It is incredibly easy to locate, even if you are arriving in a new city for the first time. You are just minutes away from major spots, making it a perfect base for exploring. •Perfect for Families & Friends: The layout and atmosphere are highly recommended for groups. The rooms are spacious enough to accommodate families or a bunch of friends traveling together without everyone feeling crammed. The staff is welcoming and great with larger groups. Where They Can Improve: •The Breakfast Buffet: While everything else was great, the breakfast buffet left a bit to be desired. The options were a bit repetitive, and some of the hot dishes were lukewarm by the time we sat down. It is fine for a quick bite, but they could definitely do better with variety and freshness.

Overall, our stay was okay but there were some issues that need improvement. We had to request for an extra towel for the floor because it was not provided in the room setup. Breakfast was good, and we appreciated the variety and taste. However, our booking clearly stated 4 breakfast inclusions, but upon arrival, we were informed that it only covered 2 breakfasts, which was disappointing and felt misleading. During our stay, there was an earthquake (magnitude 5.5). Surprisingly, no alarm or safety announcement was made by the hotel, which was concerning. Proper safety protocols should be in place during emergencies. Overall, good breakfast but some service gaps and safety concerns need to be addressed.

Large room. The hotel is clean and the included breakfast is a great plus. Another important advantage is that you can leave your luggage in the storage room, and it's free!

If you accidentally choose the wrong hotel, it is best for girls to not go to a remote area. If it is a family, it is still good. There is a swimming pool, a small bar, the service is OK, the facilities are too old

We decided on this hotel based on price, but it was even more comfortable than we expected. My wife and I stayed here for four days. It's in the middle of the city, so it's in a great location with the night market and mall nearby. As you'd expect from Duterte's hometown, the security is very good. The thing that surprised me the most was the taxis. They always keep the meter running, even if you don't use Grab. You wouldn't see this in Manila.

We arrived a bit late on our first night and were accommodated poorly. After a long day of travel, we encountered several issues with our room arrangements. I had booked two rooms, expecting them to be close to each other, but that was not the case. As a family travelling together, we requested to have our rooms swapped to be nearer, yet we were only allowed to add an extra bed. This was not ideal, especially since my mom couldn't stay alone in a room meant for 6 to 8 people, which I had already paid for. When I spoke to the front desk, who I believe was the manager on duty at the time, her tone was unpleasing and lacked empathy for us as guests. It was a disappointing negotiation. We also discussed issues with the internet connection, and she seemed unyielding, suggesting that nothing could be done except to pay for a data plan, for which they would provide a modem. Having stayed at many hotels and being a hotel manager, I can clearly say that our service was inadequate.

Where to Experience Kadayawan Festival

Kadayawan activities take place around different parts of Davao City instead of one festival ground.

Ramon Magsaysay Park

Ramon Magsaysay Park is one of the main cultural locations during Kadayawan.

It is closely connected to Kadayawan Village and other cultural activities.

The official 2026 festival opening was also held at Magsaysay Park on August 7.

Downtown Davao

Downtown Davao is convenient for reaching many festival activities, restaurants, shops and attractions.

Major events can also cause road closures and heavier traffic around central areas.

Davao City Coastal Road

The Davao City Coastal Road has also been used as a large event space for Kadayawan activities and performances.

Its wide open areas can accommodate large crowds during major festival events.

People's Park

People's Park is a popular attraction in central Davao and is convenient to include in your itinerary while exploring the city during Kadayawan.

Roxas Night Market

After festival activities, visit Roxas Night Market for local street food and snacks.

You can find:

  • Grilled food
  • Barbecue
  • Seafood
  • Local snacks
  • Drinks
  • Affordable meals
🌙 Pro Tip: Roxas Night Market can become busy in the evening, especially during festival season. Visit a little earlier if you prefer fewer crowds.
