This revitalized Inn is absolutely fantastic. There are a few drawbacks that visitors need to be prepared for, however I'll start with the positives, of which there are many. First of all, the history of this place (A Harvey House along Route 66 and the Santa Fe Railroad) is just awesome and is celebrated with plenty of historical information for guests to consume. The hotel has a museum dedicated to its history, which is a must for all visitors and is right on property. Of course, the Inn used to be a Train Station, so it is positioned right along-side the train tracks, and they are busy! While staying there, sit outside in the back along the long portico and watch trains go by transporting lots of goods as well as an occasional Amtrak passenger train, which stops at La Posada as it's Winslow, AZ stop. The gift shop is outstanding and fun to shop and the Dining Room, called the Turquoise Room, serves flavorful, beautifully presented Southwestern cuisine. Even the grounds around the Inn are fun to explore and the garden areas are very pretty, dotted with many secluded areas to relax and read or visit with family or friends. Each room is different, decorated with regional decor and the beds are reasonably comfortable. Outside each room is a biography of a famous person who has stayed at La Posada and in the Tower wing, there is a wall of photographs of other very famous guests. A couple of things visitors or potential guests need to be aware of before booking. The first is that if you are assigned a "track side room," you will hear the trains all night long. The second thing to be aware of is that there are no elevators, so if your room is on the second floor room, you'll be hauling up a significant number of stairs. There is no bell service, so guests must be able to serve themselves. Another challenge is that not all rooms have "walk in" showers. Ours had a big jacuzzi tub and getting in and out to shower requires agility. And finally, none of the rooms have telephones. If you want or need something for your room, you'll either need to go down to the front desk or use a cell phone. La Posada does not have a pool. It is for these reasons, I did not assign a five star rating, but we definitely got a good workout during our stay as our room was on the second floor. La Posada is a great place to stay if you are visiting The Painted Desert and/or the Petrified Forrest, and is so much more interesting than a stop over in Flagstaff if you are traveling along 1-40. We recommend two nights just to take it all in.
