Room fine and clean enough . Beef was with a poor breakfast and service and being told you can’t have an extra sausage as the chef said you can’t which was very funny and pathetic at the same time !!

Overall wasnt a great stay, ill keep it short and sweet and list positives and negatives rather than go into detail Positives - All staff friendly and helpful, nice location, if you can book a deluxe room so you get a first floor room with outside table and chairs and a view of the golf course. Treatment and spa faciltes were good though theres no jaqoozi. Comfy bed! Negatives - Organisation, i had spa day and lunch, it wasnt explained about where lunch was or what was included i had to ask all the questions. I wasnt told the £15 limit for lunch so i went over and they then expected me to pay the difference but they agreed it was unfair. Room cleanliness, bathroom wasnt great, nail clippings on floor and 100’s of small hairs all around the bath after someones shave! Room was very warm and it wasnt even that hot outside, take a fan in hot weather! Food prices very high for what you get, nothing special! Took 30 mins to get my drink at dinner and 65 mins to get my burger and chips, apparantly staff were off sick and there was a new bar man who delayed drinks I wouldnt go back for the price you have to pay and what you get

Last minute, this place is only good if you play golf. We arrived late, no water or biscuits in room, told it wasn’t included. Bed was too hard. Small bottle of water cost £3.50 only from the bar. Had a group of 30 men here, rude loud and disgusting. Breakfast, not bad , anything from self service was hit hard by these men eating everything that was out. Not refilled. By staff until we were leaving.

Great location for a short break. Excellent leisure facilities. Not far from Shrewsbury which is definitely worth a visit being almost encircled by the River Severn. Look forward to staying again and exploring more of Shropshire.

Where to start on this hotel experience is the difficult bit....I walked into the room allocated to me (111) to find a filthy carpet and curtains. Unwilling to actually take my shoes off I walked back to reception (no phones in any of the rooms) to reception to ask for a change of rooms, showing them the photos of the offending carpet. No apology, no customer service - just a new room allocation (105). The second room, whilst the carpet was cleaner, was still really below par. Dirty shower with mould and something brown and very unappealing on the tiles. Awful grouting with blobs and streaks of it on the floor tiles. A shower knob that came off in my hand and would not allow me to control the temperature. Dirt and dust in the corner of the room when I searched for a bedside plug. No bedside plugs to charge phones and other devices. A hole in the carpet. A moth on the bed. Something brown and strange on the sheet.....Just really really disappointing. Checked out this morning and reception made no effort to engage. No checking about my stay experience, no smiles, no customer care.

If all you want is a large room with a view then Macdonald Hill Valley Golf and Spa may be for you, but if cleanliness matters avoid it! The hotel sells itself as a luxury 4 star hotel but amongst other things it is shabby and grubby. The arms of the chairs are greasily dirty, the carpets are dirty and in places threadbare, tables are scratched and chipped. Everywhere needs a lick of paint and some tlc. Interestingly the cleaning trolley and hoover in reception seem to be a feature as they never moved presumably considered a good alternative to fresh flowers which were no where to be seen in the whole hotel. The bedrooms could do with a deep clean, the pillow cases don’t fit the pillows so there are four inches of uncovered pillow (they looked so unsavoury I went to Sainsbury’s and bought two), our mattress cover was stained. The shower was disgusting and on the first morning so hot it was scalding and although there’s the facility to change the temperature nothing happened. The maintenance man turned up in the afternoon and we then had a tepid shower for the rest of our stay and he had jammed the temperature control so it would not even move! We lived in the area for 45 years and have known the Hill Valley for 20 odd of them, watching it slowly slip in standards. We moved south in March. In August we returned to attend a surprise birthday party and checked into Hill Valley as the alternatives were fully booked. Our bed had certainly been lain on if not slept in and the carpet covered in biscuit crumbs we were told we could not be moved as all the other rooms had been allocated and “it would not be fair on other guests”(they did agree to change the sheets and hoover whilst we were at the party we had driven six hours to attend). We had already booked 4 nights in September to attend a wedding to be held at the hotel and were assured things would be different. Here I have to add that the sticky toffee pudding served at the wedding breakfast had been made with salt and was removed quicker than it was served and eventually replaced with some poor excuse of the same but this time with hardly any ice cream as presumably they did not have enough for all the guests. This leads me on to breakfast next morning when they virtually ran out of food at 9.20 (breakfast was supposedly served until 10) and if you book cost £18.00 pp or £24 on the morning with a £5 surcharge on several alternatives. I did speak to the manager on the first morning who came over as arrogant and in denial and although he made promises they did not happen and he was conspicuous by his absence for the following 3 days. I am coping with crutches and a fractured pelvis and the lift to the restaurant was out of order so each morning I had to struggle down 20 odd steps and Saturdays and Sunday the breakfast was buffet style laid out in another room, I was not offered table service but I have to say the young waiting on staff were kind and helped where they could. We booked for the Sunday night Driver deal. 1 night D/B/B 2 rounds of golf £119.00 The Emerald course was enjoyable to play and in reasonable condition (not great, but due to the lack of rainfall it was understandable). However the Sapphire Course was a disappointment. It could easily be a nice picturesque enjoyable short course ( 7 par 3's 1 par 5, 10 par 4's), but it is badly neglected and lacking in some much needed TLC. The fact that one of the staff drove his buggy and then parked it up right onto one of the Tee boxes just to chat to us , showed the level of professionalism in looking after the Sapphire Course. Car parking at the Hotel is reasonably ample but if like me you benefit from using a Disabled space then that was problematic. Whilst there were plenty of 'blue badge' spaces 80% of them where being used by selfish non badge users just for their own lazy convenience (i had to park at the furtherest point on the carpark) When I mentioned this misuse to staff, the reply I received was "oh dear"! Food was on the whole good (but pricey if it wasn't included in your 'package ') Cash is not acceptable anywhere - card only. Frustrating when all you want to buy is a bottle of water from the proshop. Beer etc was also pricey, e.g 1 larger, 1 bitter, 1 cider, 1 vodka and lemonade = £28.00. Wine prices were silly. Afternoon cream tea was an insult, £8.50 for a tea, jam, cream and 2 of the smallest saddest looking scones you can imagine (the size of an Egg!) , even the staff were embarrassed. At Breakfast I was informed I could only have one egg as there wasn't enough to go round (even though I wasn't having any beans, tomatoes, hash browns!) Rooms were clean and spacious (the tv was on the small size for the wall/room size) Golf buggy hire was on the steep side at £40.00 per round The staff on the whole were helpful, friendly, and polite. Will I be returning anytime soon..... Probably not, there are other places that are better.

Stayed here for one night for a relaxing break for myself and a friend. The hotel is outdated and needs some tlc. However the worst thing for us was the state of the room. It was thick with dust everywhere, and what can only be described as mucus all up the one wall. Kettle was full of limescale, bathroom had mould on the ceiling, and dirt in corners, also confetti in corners from previous guests. Hair in plug hole in shower and bath. It really needs a deep clean! We did complain to reception and they sent the housekeeping manager up, a bit of dust had been polished off the skirting boards but nothing else. We stayed in the room and didn’t complain again. We didn’t want to be those ‘Karens’ complaining all the time and it was one night we can manage. The bedding was fresh and clean although there was no mattress protecter and my sheet on my single bed wasn’t on the bed it was half hanging off. The hairdryer didn’t work we had to get another one from reception. We are both housekeepers in a different hotel so We know that this is very poor standard. It seems like the housekeepers have literally put fresh bedding on, hovered the carpet and emptied the bins that’s it. Although on saying that my deep tissue back massage was lovely, and the lady that did it was very polite and professional. Although the pool area and steam and sauna were very old and dilapidated. For the price we paid to stay here, it was appalling really. I would not return.
