The Royal Oak is a charming historic building on Severn Street - at the main cross roads in the town centre. It is a three story, late Georgian building with lots of character. Signs of the history are inside too - from the thoughtful furnishings and old prints and maps on the walls. The menu however, is a more modern affair. We were really pleased to find three vegan choices and two more vegetarian options - all under £15.00. The dining room was busy when we arrived, and the staff could not have been more helpful in making room for us despite being booked up.

Staff friendly & helpful. However service poor. Worst fish n chips. Waited an hour for other meals. Then arrived cold and dry. Food varied on chef on duty. Ordered same meal on two different nights and completely different presentation and taste. Room was ok but very noisy traffic so woken 5.30am. Dangerous step up to bathroom. Uncomfortable mattress. Issue with hot water when we arrived and although fixed, room 101 only got hot water early in the morning. Then Luke warm rest of the day. Hotel needs redecorating in many areas. Children allowed to run around the hotel screaming and shouting. Very disappointing experience. Wrote to Manager with feedback but not had any reply. Stayed in other coaching inns which were so much better.

We stop over near Oswestry on our two or three trips a year to the North of England, having been disappointed in our choices so far we decided to try The Royal Oak in Welshpool. What a wonderful, excellent choice that decision turned out to be. Our welcome was most pleasant, the hotel was clean, we went to our room, it was spotless, comfortable and everything we needed. Our pre dinner drinks in the bar were well served and reasonably priced. Our evening meal was excellent, well served, quality ingredients, beautifully cooked and presented. After drinks in the bar we had a very comfortable night, great shower and then an excellent breakfast. We then had a problem with our technology and after going into Welshpool we returned to the hotel. The staff found us a quiet corner and supplied us with coffee for a couple of hours. We cannot fault this hotel, the food, the cleanliness, a free car park, the comfort and last but most importantly the excellent, pleasant, helpful staff. We shall certainly be returning and we are delighted to have found our new pit stop which next time we'll make longer than one night.

My wife and I visited at lunchtime to celebrate her birthday. We ordered our drinks and were then shown to our table in the restaurant by the manager, Laura. We were given the menu which was varied and the options were explained. We chose the winter vegetable soup and the pork and black pudding scotch egg as starters. They were both great. For our mains we both chose the Chef's pie of the day with chunky chips, a good choice, they were excellent. After a suitable pause we decided that there was room for dessert. One blood orange trifle and mixed berry Eton mess later, we were comfortably fed. What a great meal, excellent service from the staff and great cooking by the Chef. I believe there was another larger party using the function room but the service we received was great.

Very nice lunch, couldn't fault it. Good value, nice food, very pleasant and efficient staff. I had a gluten free cod, chips and mushy peas, the best I've had. I will visit again on the way through.

Arrived in the evening, checked in promptly by welcoming staff. Staff were helpful with knowledge of the local area. The room was quite small, but was enough for what we needed. Bit dusty in places. There were kitchen fans/air con type units which kept us awake at night outside the window. Hotel corridors leading to the rooms needs a freshen up - there is a lot of chipped pain/scuffs to the walls.

We stopped in what was termed a 'family room'. The bed was big and comfortable. The bathroom is an accident waiting to happen. Its a very tiny bathroom, and there is a step from the bedroom into the bathroom, and then a step onto a narrow ledge that the bath sits on (see photo), and there is a shower over the bath, but no handrail at any level that you can hold onto, getting in and out of the shower. You have to be very very careful not to fall over, getting in and out. We ate at the restaurant one night and had fish and chips and they were awful. Mostly batter, a very small sliver of fish and as the batter was horribly overcooked to a very dark brown colour, that meant the fish was overcooked too, as there was such a thin sliver of it. Not what I expected from a restaurant like this. We didn't eat there again, despite being here for a week.
