Property Description
The Tannery was built ca. 1820 on Old Germantown Road, an historic central byway, which in its heyday was an important part of revolutionary Virginia and used for the exploration of the then western frontier. Constructed with handmade brick and heart pine beams, The Tannery was initially a blacksmith shop, a tannery and a relay station for riders to obtain fresh horses.
In 1997, The Tannery was updated, remodeled and furnished with antiques. Large double back porches overlook two streams, a lovely treed half acre and the Alleghany Mountains. The Warm Springs Stream flows through the rear of the property, with warm mineral water around 75-85 degrees depending on whether it has rained or the air temperature is cool. There is a small pool and waterfall for a unique soaking experience day or night. To the side of the house, a cold artisan spring trickles through watercress to meet the Warm Springs Stream.
Within walking distance, the center of Warm Springs village is a charming step back into time. The newly renovated Warm Springs Pools are a quarter mile from The Tannery. The village is 5 miles north of the historic Homestead Hotel. Wonderful restaurants are abundant including pubs. The area is also surrounded by State and National Park land with plenty of out door activities. Or just relax on the main porch of The Tannery: read, bird watch, or nap. The Tannery is the perfect place for a romantic getaway or an activity filled weekend. Come enjoy the beautiful mountains of Virginia.

Absolutely a magical place!! The dipping pool in the back was oh so relaxing and the temperature was perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed sleeping in the screened porch upstairs. It was like sleeping in a treehouse! Insects chirping and water running from the stream was meditative!! I loved the experience. The house is magnificent, accommodating and unique. If you looking for a relaxing experience, this is the place!

The Tannery is an oasis of tranquility. The house is located on a quiet road and offers plenty of privacy. The house itself was the perfect size for me and my wife. The kitchen is small, but has everything you need to make breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The screened-in porch was the perfect place to enjoy morning coffee and enjoy the sounds of nature. To be perfectly frank, most of your time should be spent in the true gem of this property: the warm springs swimming hole. It is private, quiet, and refreshing. If you are seeking a reset, a day spent in the spring is exactly what you need. The ability to have your own private mineral soak, in and of itself, makes this property a gem. When combined with a space with such history, this property is a can’t-miss. It is a special opportunity to have your own hidden mountain paradise. Also, a word on the mouse issue. This property is very rural. During my time, I saw deer, chipmunks, field mice, and a hawk. The swimming hole has fish in it who are very curious. However, I did not see any signs of any “critters” in the house. The house is spotless. The space itself shows how much pride the owners take in it. This property is historic and, as such, is very rustic. One of the main reasons to stay here is to get back to nature. You’ll probably see animals of all shapes and sizes by the spring, but there aren’t mice in the house.

House is charming but old. Five star outstanding features include sleeping porches, a lovely yard and surroundings, and, of course, the magical warm mineral "dipping" creek in the back yard, which are alone worth the stay. I would strongly recommend that owners find a way to install a full sized refrigerator near the kitchen, as the dormitory sized one on the floor, and the full sized one in the basement (which you have to go outside to reach) is quite inconvenient. There are a lot of stairs. Also, guests should be aware that the house is only a few feet from the road, although there is very little traffic. A unique and beautiful property - recommend it for adults only.

What a wonderful property! This house felt special from the moment we arrived. You could tell how much the owners care for the home from the cozy decor to the historic wood floors. We loved spending time on the porch playing cards and soaking in the stream at the back of the property. The weather was perfect for our stay but even if it was raining we would have had a great time. The stream itself was awesome. There were two places in the stream that were deep enough to dunk under the water. The water was crystal clear, we could see straight to the bottom! The water was warm and inviting. We had never experienced anything like it!The house itself was clean and equipped with the essentials for our stay. Other reviews mentioned a mouse issue but we saw none of that during our stay. The location of the house was also excellent, we were able to walk to restaurants & the Warm Springs Pools. Check in and out was easy. The hosts were very friendly and communicative. The only constructive feedback we had was that the beds were too firm for us personally, but nothing that couldn’t be fixed with a foam topper. For anyone planning to cook at the house, there are limited options for grocery stores so make sure to shop ahead of time! The mini fridge is small in the kitchen but we made it work just fine. Overall, if you’re looking for a nature-forward, peaceful, and quiet getaway, this is the place for you! I’ll be recommending this place to lots of people I know.

The Tannery
We have stayed in dozens of B&B’s and cottages over the last 40 years in the mountains of Virginia. This was by far the worst. Our first impression when we walked in was a dark and dreary place. We turned on every light we could find, and it was still dark. The pictures shown in the listing have been enhanced to make it seem much brighter. Our next impression was that it was infested with mice – currently and in the past. We have had a house in the mountains for 24 years and understand how the critters get in. We also understand the diligence necessary to keep the place clean of mouse droppings. We experienced the familiar odor of a dead mouse behind the cupboard that held the microwave, a dead mouse in a trap under the wardrobe upon arrival, a live mouse by the bed, fresh mouse droppings on the back bedroom windowsill and old, old mouse droppings on top of the radiant floor heaters that had been fossilized. The “fully equipped “kitchen included a dormitory refrigerator that had not been defrosted for months and a tiny apartment stove. Fortunately for us we did not cook any meals. I’m not sure if the soaking pool description is just flat out misleading or we were there at the wrong time. Other people seemed to love it. The water temperature was about 75 degrees, and any soaking pool was not to be found- maybe the water was too high. On a positive note, the screened back porch was delightful .

Unsafe Location
The property owners have the keys for the property under a hide-a-key and expect the renters to return it after entry (keys on the dining room table). In addition to using a hide-a-key that is generally unsafe, none of the windows on the lower level have a lock on them and open very easily.
VRBO customer service confirmed these are safety violations, so stay at your own risk.

A Warm Spring at The Tannery
What a wonderful find. 200 year old house in perfect cozy condition. The back porch saw a lot of us. The babbling brook in the back yard is warm spring-fed as described. Soaking pool there was warm indeed. Spent a lot of time there too. Hosts Mimi and Jack told us everything we needed to know. Looking forward to a return trip.
