The Appalachian at Mountain Creek

Our stay at Mountain Creek Resort was disappointing from start to finish. When I booked the room, I was required to pay in full upfront, which is not typical for a hotel reservation. In hindsight, I’m glad I did — before our arrival, the resort tried to charge me a higher rate, claiming I had received a “block rate” for a wedding that didn’t even have one. The same thing happened to my daughter: she was quoted one price over the phone, but because she hadn’t prepaid, she was charged a higher rate at check-in. Upon arrival, things only got worse. There is no real front desk — just a young man named Joseph sitting at the snack bar with an iPad. We called ahead asking if early check-in might be possible and were told they could not promise anything but would do their best. When we arrived at 1 PM, we were told that we would be able to get to our room by 2 PM, so we waited patiently. Rather than keys, the resort send you a room code for the door lock on your room. By 2:30 we still had no room code. My elderly mother was waiting, and we were on a tight schedule for a wedding, yet Joseph kept saying he was “sending out codes” and doing his best but all he had was an IPad. My daughter received her room code first, but it didn’t work. By 2:45, I had to ask again for our code so we could get ready. Joseph said he would text it to me — but that text never came. Joseph told me he wasn’t responsible for the bad WIFI. I waited a few more minutes and finally went back to the snack bar and asked Jospeh to please write the code down for me so we could get into our room, which he did, and we were finally able to get into the room a little before 3pm. The room itself was clean but clearly unfinished — spackle on the walls, exposed pipes, and an electrical panel in the closet. My sister’s room was even worse: the air conditioning wasn’t on or working, and they spent a hot, uncomfortable night after their son’s wedding. The next morning, they discovered a tiny sign under the unit explaining that you had to push a hidden button for it to work. It’s truly unfortunate — the resort has great potential, but it’s extremely poorly managed. Between the billing issues, lack of organization, and basic comfort problems, our experience was frustrating and disappointing from beginning to end.

Upon arrival, there was nowhere to check in. Just a shop that you would never imagine as a place to check in for an almost $300 hotel room. I asked around people poibted me to this shop - they sell food and snacks, no check-in notifications. Absolutely bizarre. The bartender at the bar casually advise that she was probably on break. Who leaves a check-in desk for break for 1/2 hour to 45 minutes? I went back to the bar, up and down hallways, tried to call Mountain Creek and *******. They automated system asked for a number that was never given to me: an itinerary number that started with a some letter that I didnt have. Never got through to anybody. Tried multiple times. Bartender tried to call the person that was supposed to be there on a cell phone, no answer. It was absolutely horrible. Then, she finally shows up like nothing was wrong. It was insane. Then, I get up to my room and there bed was all messed up, trash in a trash can in the middle of the room, towels everywhere, a dishwasher sitting in the middle of the kitchen. I sent messages/pictures to the text number she said I could text, no response. Went back down to this shop where you are supposed to check and she was helping someone on the phone FOREVER and did not acknowledge me. It was insanely frustrating. She got me to another room. Great time great place great memories Check in was super easy, free indoor parking, rooms were spacious and clean. Location is amazing, water park is a 3 min walk from they hotel. The pool and hot tub were clean and not to packed. Some restaurants in the area like the Crystal Cafe for breakfast.
