The view of the rooms is the best, good service and attention but facilities and furniture already deteriorated.

Location is very good, right by the sea. Staff very friendly. Food was nothing special. Rooms are a bit outdated.

Loved this place. I went alone & still had a great time. A nice slice of heaven. Snorkeling from the beach was difficult due to current & rocky bottom. Guides are available for a price. Very lush. I liked the restaurants.

We went 8/9-8/16 with our family of 4 and my parents for our 5th visit. My kids ages 5 & 8 loved the kids club--big thanks to Carla and Dani, they are sweet angels! Our kids are very familiar with Akumal and love the pools, digging in the sand, and catching hermit crabs! We had breakfast at the buffet every morning--Adrianna was the best although my son was always shy with her haha! We had lunch at the snack bar every day and Rojelio was the best! We hung around the main pool and pool by building 1 for half the stay due to the sargassum but we made the most of the ocean conditions that we couldn't control! Our favorite bartenders Omero, Blanca, and Marissa! They really do feel like family by the end of our trip! Thankfully the ocean cleared up and we got to float in the sea for our last two days! We snorkeled and saw a ton of fish one day. We went to all ala carte restaurants during our stay and Lima was truly our favorite this trip! Big shout out to Manuel and Toribio!! Gabriel at the sushi bar was very nice and makes the best rolls for lunch! Despite the seaweed, August was beautiful and we would definitely return again during this time. We stayed in building 4 and the AC was blasting and the room was stunning. The fan was a little loud but still made the room cold! We met so many new people and got so many travel tips!! Can't wait for trip #6!

Unfortunately I can’t understand how this hotel has so many 5* reviews, it was the worst holiday I’ve ever been on and I honestly would have rather stayed at home and I’m so sad we made such a mistake picking this trip. My husband and I both suffered food poisoning in our time at Akumal Bay; my husband was seriously ill on our second day and then I was on our fifth and we both felt dreadful for 48 hours or so meaning that we effectively had one good day out of a week. Besides the food poisoning (which is enough to ruin even a perfect hotel) we thought it was very average and definitely not 5*. Service The service was lacking. For example, upon arrival after a 10 hour flight we had to carry our suitcases to the furthest building including up stairs as there were no bellboys to assist. Drinks service was also extremely slow to the point that we gave up a few times, similarly we waited a really long time to be served food at the pool bar. After reporting our illnesses to the hotel we requested extra bottled water to our room to rehydrate and received just 500ml bottles each and had to repeatedly ask for more. Food and drink Besides the food poisoning, the food was mostly bland and luke warm. We have visited Mexico before and love Mexican food but I wouldn’t say we had a single good meal. Cocktails were poor and juices were topped up with water (probably how we got gastroenteritis). I really can’t believe the reviews saying that the food is good. Beach Visiting at the beginning of June was a big mistake. The sargassum was much worse than we expected meaning it was impossible to go in the sea and there was a general rotting vegetation smell. It would be nice at a different time of year. Pools The main pool is quite nice with Bali beds. The smaller pools were pretty dirty with slimy tiles (we only ventured into the pool outside building 4 once). Room The room in building 4 was nice, clean, spacious and well air conditioned (we spent a lot more time there than we wanted to). Very little privacy in the bathroom design with just one door between the bedroom and toilet, and a frosted glass door between the bedroom and shower. Location Great proximity to the turtle reserve and once we’d been on one guided tour with one of the guys on the beach we knew where to look when we snorkelled early in the morning. Walking distance to a cool bar/restaurant called La Buena Vista plus Caleta Yalkú lagoon. Unfortunately due to sickness we weren’t able to venture further.

Resort was very average. I chose it because the rating was 9 and it was pitched as a 4-star resort. Not sure how it got either. It's a 3-star at best. I will say it has 2 things going for it: every room has an ocean view; and the staff is generally very nice (albeit incompetent). Buildings 3 & 4, rooms are updated, but still not luxury. Very minimal in terms of amenities. (We used the provided bath salts the first night in the hot tub and they were not restocked by housekeeping, like body wash, lotion and shampoo. No one knew how to get that restocked.) Other building's room are smelly (damp moldy smell) and run-down. The main pool's water has a strange order and is not clean. Towels were hard to come by. Cabana cushions were filthy. Food was consistently bad. Very basic for the price paid – cheap and repetitive. Same thing every day on buffet. I typically eat vegan but here that was impossible. I had planned to eat vegetarian, but even that was challenging. Others on the trip had meat, but said it was poor quality, tough. Sushi at snack bar was a joke. A few rolls with cucumber, carrot and rice, mainly. Sometimes you'd see a bit of tuna. I ordered a chickpea burger from room service once and it was awful. Did not even taste like chickpeas (or any food for that matter). One exception was the pumpkin enchiladas at Alux - those were fantastic. The drinks were the cheapest possible brand. And still diluted. We were told there was Grey Goose, etc. – but nope. When I ordered a latte from the bar outside of the buffet area (they call it a coffee bar), while the espresso was dispensing, the bartender grabbed the rag he uses to wipe the bar area, rung it out in sitting sink water, wiped the bar counter, then wiped the steam wand of the espresso machine before steaming my milk. Gag. In general, when you ask for something, you get passed off to someone else that just runs you in circles. Very frustrating. We asked for a candle once, just to borrow while using the hot tub (if you turn lights on, bugs got bad), they said they didn't have one...but every table in restaurants had them. It's an all-inclusive, and the fridge has some sodas, waters, 2 Heinekens, a tiny candy bar and a small chips bag. I asked our "butler" if they could take the sodas and snacks out and just put 4 waters and 4 Heinekens in there each day. After getting passed around to 3 different staff members, I ended up having to call Housekeeping to ask. (Why the Butler couldn't call on my behalf is beyond me!) Still, that request was never fulfilled. Our hot tub didn't work the first 3 nights of a 4-night stay. Asked every day for it to be fixed. Got passed around on that too. Finally, it was fixed that last night. Would not go back.
