We have stayed at the fisherman's cott about 5 times now, we pick here for the wonderful location, which never fails. Unfortunately this time we were less than impressed with our stay. The room was comfortable but the bathroom needed a good clean and some redecorating. Shower leaked. Food was average, overpriced. On our first night we booked a table but waiting 45mins for our drinks was a bit much. Service was patchy, when some of the older staff were busy, the younger ones didn't seem to be bothered. My husband lost something there in the garden it wasn't handed in so someone stole it.!

The food was awful, the service was slow but the location was amazing. Come here for a drink just don't expect to be served quickly and definitely do not eat here.

I made the mistake of staying here in August 2024 for 3 nights with my family. In February 2025 they made an unauthorised charge to my credit card which I have been trying to get refunded for the last 6 months, they are refusing to communicate with me.

Disappointing experience — not what we expected We arrived early and decided to have lunch, which unfortunately set the tone for the rest of the visit. We started with the chicken starter, which was actually quite nice. However, once we finished, no one came to clear our plates — we ended up placing them on a nearby empty table ourselves. For mains, we ordered a steak sandwich with chips and a cheeseburger with fries. The steak was cut into chunks and was so tough it was nearly impossible to chew. The fries were cold, and the burger was average at best — nothing memorable. We also noticed that new guests arriving were left waiting at the door without being acknowledged for quite a while. Things went from bad to worse when we went to check in. Despite reserving a ground floor room with river views (important due to my partner’s mobility issues), we were told the room had already been given away. They blamed the issue on a problem with the booking system. After a long discussion, we were moved to their sister hotel, The White Hart in Exeter City. While the staff there were warm and welcoming and the food was delicious, it wasn’t the peaceful, rural setting we had originally booked and were looking forward to.

It is in a lovely area next to the river, location close to Tiverton and Exeter was ideal for us as we only needed an overnight stay in this area. We didn’t eat in the restaurant as whilst checking in there wasn’t many staff around people were queuing for tables and to check in, all in the same area, to us it didn’t feel like a child friendly place so we went elsewhere for food in the evening and the morning. Our room 21 was ok, a decent size the bathroom wasn’t great, on arrival the bath was full of old dirty towels, the bath panel was cracked near the top so had watch the kids getting in and out, also there’s a large window in the bathroom with no blinds or frosted glass so didn’t feel very private at all. It was also a hot night but the window im the room couldn’t stay open by itself. There was fans in the room but only the little one worked which did very little in that room. Also looking out the side window there’s so much moss etc on the roof it makes for an unpleasant view. The hotel part has so much potential due to the setting but some work.

Nice area with lovely river right next to it. Check in lady lovely and lady behind bar nice. Room dated... we asked for family room as our daughter was with us. No sheet provided for pull out bed... nothing set up for her to sleep on. Very noisy so got no sleep. Next morning went for breakfast, lady who served us welcomed us with a cranky face and a sigh... really did not want to be there.. food terrible couldn't eat it. Both the night before and the breakfast. Disappointing start to our holiday. We had booked for our return journey but cancelled the morning we checked out and booked somewhere else. Only nice thing was the river and view

Great food but poor service. We waited 30 minutes for drinks and one hour for starters. No explanation for the delay, which would have helped, but staff ignored the situation. Pub was fairly busy but a large establishment like this should know better. We had small children and they were starving. It was a birthday celebration we had been looking forward to so was very disappointing.
